ON THE PROPERTY OF J.J. MANGAN,

MICHAUD AND GUIBORD TOWNSHIPS, ONTARIO

INTRODUCTION

l l l l lB On May 27, 1988 a combined airborne geophysical survey was

fl completed on the property of J.J. Mangan in Michaud and Guibord

Townships, Ontario. Magnetic and VLF-electromagnetic data was

l collected by the airborne division of H. Ferderber Geophysics

Ltd. The survey was flown from a base at Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

A total of 29.08 miles of data was collected along north-south

B flight lines.

The magnetic survey provides information which helps

l define the underlying geological structures and identifies any

potential economic concentrations which may contain variations in

accessory magnetic minerals. The VLF-electromagnetic survey

M outlines conductive zones which may represent shear zones and/or

metallic sulphide deposits containing gold mineralization,

PROPERTY DESCRIPTION, LOCATION AND ACCESS

l l l

The property of J.J. Mangan is composed of sixteen claims,

l with ten claims in Michaud Township and six claims in Guibord

Township, Larder Lake Mining Division, Ontario. The claims have

l an area of approximately 256 hectares in a single block, and are

m registered with the Office of the Mining Recorder at Kirkland

Lake, Ontario. The claim list is given in Appendix 1.

l The claim group is located approximately 10.8 miles

northeast of the village of Holtyre, 14.0 miles east of the town

B of Matheson, and 26.0 miles north-northwest of the town of

B Kirkland Lake. Access can be obtained by several bush roads

extending south from Highway 101 which passes approximately 0.8

l miles to the north of the property.

The claim block is located approximately 0.6 miles west of

B Perry Lake, and is cut from east to west by Perry Creek.

B Approximately 90% of the property is forested, the topography is

low to moderate.

B Supplies, services, and qualified manpower are readily

available locally in the Timmins area.

GEOLOGY

portion of the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Superior Province of

the Canadian Shield. The Abitibi Volcanic Belt extends for

nearly 350 miles in an east-west direction

The Ontario Department of Mines Geological Compilation

Series, Timmins-Kirkland Lake Sheet, Map 2205, outlines the

geology underlying the property. According to Map 2205, the

property is predominantly underlain by Early Precambrian mafic

flows and pyroclastic rocks. Along the southern boundary and

located south of the property is a large elliptical felsic

intrusive of syenite, monzonite, and feldspar porphyry

composition. In the northwestern corner of the claim block is a

small northwest to southeasterly trending elliptical ultramafic

intrusive of peridotite and pyroxenite composition. Two diabase

dykes located in the northwestern part of the claim block trend

north-northwest and north-northeast. These dykes appear to have

been cut and offset by a short northwesterly striking fault.

The major structural features of the area are the east-west

striking Pipestone Fault located just north of the property and

the Destor-Porcupine Faults located approximately four miles

south of the property. This major crustal dislocation has a

known strike length of 300 km, from the Timmins area in the west

to Destor in western Quebec.

Nurnerous gold deposits are associated with the Destor-

Porcupine Fault, the Pipestone Fault, and their related

structures. Foremost among these are the deposits of the

Timmins-Porcupine camp (ie. Mcintyre Mine, Hollinger Mine, Ross

Mine and Croesus Mine) and of the Harker-Holloway Area.

East of the property in Harker and Holloway Townships,

numerous gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc occurrences are

associated with the Destor-Porcupine Fault. The Canamax

Resources and the American Barrick Resources properties are

located 17 to 18 miles east of the claim block. The Holt-

McDerroott Mine of American Barrick Resources Corp. in Harker and

Holloway Townships is scheduled to go into production in mid-1988

with probable reserves of 2,587,000 tons at 0.196 oz/ton Au.

Canamax Resources Inc. reports reserves of 576,400 tons averaging

0.215 oz Au/ton in its east and Matawasaga Zones, east of the

Holt-McDermott Mine. Gold in the Teddy Bear Prospect, located in

the southwestern corner of Holloway Township and the southeastern

corner of Harker Township, is located in quartz stringers and

veins of up to three feet in width and is hosted by carbonatized

basalts.

The Harker Prospect, discovered in 1924, is located in the southeastern part of Harker Township. The country rocks are basaltic in nature and strike N70E and dip steeply south. This vein zone is six to twelve feet wide and 3,000 feet in length. Above the 500 foot level, 37,555 tons at 0.273 oz Au/ton has been estimated, and 10,000 tons averaging 0.25 Au/ton below the 500 foot level.

INSTRUMENTATION AND SURVEY METHODS

The survey was completed using a 1972 Cessna 172, fixed-wing aircraft, call letters CF-EWK, owned and operated by H. Ferderber Geophysics Ltd. The pilot and navigator/operator were Y. Saucier and F. Longpre, respectively, of Val d'Or. Geophysical sensors were mounted in modified wing tips. The geophysical, navigation and data acquisition systems are described below.

Magnetometer

The magnetometer used was GEM Systems GSM-11, high sensitivity airborne proton (Overhauser) magnetometer. The instrument continuously measures the Earth's magnetic field at a

0.01 gamma sensitivity for l reading per second or 0.05 gamma to

10 readings per second at a 0.1 gamma absolute accuracy. For

this survey 4 readings per second were measured at an accuracy of

0.04 gammas. The analog output is on 3 channels, from l to

10,000 gammas full scale.

VLF-EM System

A Herz Totem 2A VLF-EM System was used to measure the

changes in the total field and in the vertical quadrature field

on two frequencies simultaneously, with an accuracy of J.%. The

primary transmitting station of Cutler, Maine, (NAA), frequency

24.0 KHz was employed in survey.

Radar Altimeter

The ground clearance was measured with a King 10/10 A radar

altimeter. The survey was flown at a mean clearance of 300 feet

with the altimeter producing an accuracy of 5% (15 feet) at this

altitude.

Tracking Camera and Video Centre

A RCA TC-200 colour video camera and Galaxy 200 video centre was used to record the flight path on standard VHS type video tapes. Manual fiducials were indicated on the picture frames for reference with digital printout. Flight path recovery was aided using a Panasonic Colour Video Monitor-81300 and Video Cassette Recorder AG-2500.

Data Acquisition System

A Picodas Group Inc. PDAS 1100 data acquisition system featuring seven analog inputs with two frequency inputs and external interfacing was used. A Terroiflex Corp. ST/32 Keyboard control unit and Sharp Corp. LCD display unit are connected to the data acquisition system. At present this system stores the altimeter VLF-1 inphase, VLF-1 quadrature, VLF-2 inphase, VLF-2 quadrature, magnetic field (coarse), magnetic field (fine), and the fourth difference (noise), and fiducials on 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. The data is then printed out in digital and profile form.

The survey was conducted on north-south lines were flown at

spacings of 328 feet at a speed of approximately 90 miles per

hour. Navigation was visual using airphoto mosaics, at a scale

of one inch to 1320 feet, manual fiducials and the flight path

recovery system as references.

DATA PRESENTATION

Flight lines, fiducial points and geophysical responses

were reproduced from the airphoto mosaics at a scale of one inch

to 1320 feet (1:15,840). The outline of the claim blocks and

claim map are shown on each map sheet.

m The aeromagnetic data was corrected for diurnal variations

by using a base line as reference. The data was then reduced to

l a base level of 58,000 gammas, contoured at 25 and 100 gamma

intervals and presented on Map MG-1.

m The VLF-EM was transferred from the Totem 2AG memory to

m printed form. A base value was determined for the VLF-EM

profiled data. These values were used to correct for variations

l in transmitter strength and the corrected changes in the total

field strengths were plotted on Map EM-1. The positive values

were contoured at intervals of 2%. The conductor axes were

determined and labelled l, 2, 3, etc. No priority was attached

to the labelling system.

lSURVEY RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION

m Magnetic Survey

m The airborne magnetic survey was successful in confirming

the underlying geology as indicated on O.D.M. Map 2205. A high

I magnetic anomalous zone trends northwest to southeast through the

centre of the property. The shoulders of the high have a steep

8 magnetic gradient, and values are up to and in excess of 1200

m g aroas above background. The northwestern area overlies the

presumed location of a small elliptical mafic intrusive of

l peridotite and pyroxenite composition. The magnetic contour

pattern suggests that this mafic intrusive is probably larger

8 than indicated on Map 2205, and may extend into the central part

m of the claim block. A break in the unit may represent a short

northeasterly striking diabase dyke.

B. Just south of the property another series of highs could

outline the location of mafic metavolcanic flows and pyroclastic

8 rocks. Magnetic values indicate that this zone could contain

pyrrhotite mineralization, possibly along a contact with the

felsic intrusive rocks to the south.

North of the two zones of magnetic highs are areas with

lower magnetic susceptibility. Values decrease to less than 300

gammas above background to the north, and and decrease to between

550 and 700 gammas above background to the south. The decrease

in the magnetic signature may be due to the reduced magnetic

susceptibility of two possible units of felsic metavolcanic flows

or may be caused by the dipolar nature of magnetism with a high

to the south producing a low to the north. The northernmost low

could be produced by an alteration zone related to the Pipestone

Fault.

The magnetic signature of the large elliptical felsic

intrusive outlined on the O.D.M. Map 2205, was not indicated on

the airborne magnetic survey. This intrusive may be located to

the south outside the J.J. Mangan property boundaries.

A change in the contour direction along the eastern boundary

of the claim block may outline the location of a possible north-

northeasterly striking fault.

VLF-Electromagnetic Survey

Two conductors were outlined on the property of J.J. Mangan.

Conductor l is a north-south striking conductor located in the

northwestern part of the claim block. It overlies the

southeastern end of a northwesterly striking fault, outlined on

Map 2205, and near a diabase dyke delineated by the magnetic

survey. This conductor may be caused by a shear along the fault

zone - diabase contact.

Conductor 2 is a northwesterly striking conductor located in

the extreme northwestern corner of the claim block. It roughly

overlies the northwestern end of the afore mentioned fault zone,

and may be the result of a shear within this zone.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The airborne VLF-electromagnetic and magnetic surveys were

successful in further outlining the property geology, and in

delineating two conductive zones underlying the property of J.J.

Mangan in Michaud and Guibord Townships, Ontario.

It appears that the central part of the claim group is

underlain by an ultramafic intrusive and a unit of mafic

metavolcanics and pyroclastic rocks, containing possible

pyrrhotite mineralization. Two possible zones of felsic

metavolcanic rocks are situated north of the highs. The

northernmost low may be an alteration zone associated with the

Pipestone Fault. A northeasterly striking diabase dyke lies in

the north-central part of the claim group, and a fault may strike

north-northeasterly along the eastern boundary.

Further work is warranted on the property especially in the

areas of the two possible bedrock conductors. An exploration

program of ground geophysics and geological mapping should be

completed over all the property. Ground magnetic and horizontal

loop-electromagnetic surveys should be performed to better define

the underlying geology and to delineate and classify the

conductive zone. Potentially interesting geological targets and

geophysical anomalies could then be tested by diamond drilling.
