'School, members of All-Southern California Board of Football named its 1959All-Los Angeles City High School Football Team today, following selection

meetings at Helms Hall. Banning High School, perennial Marine League champion and 1958 City champion, placed five players on the three L.A. City teams, with Reseda and Huntington Park following with four selections each. Fremont, winner of the Southern League crown and Hollywood, Western League knigpins, placed three players respectively.

Nineteen Los Angeles City High Schools are represented on this year's AllCity Football Teams, with three 12-player teams selected. Ba.lloting for 1959 City Player of the Year was heated, but following lengthy discussion, Reseda High School's 6'5, 215-pound quarterback, Hal Bedsole, was named for player of the year honors. Described by his coach, Roy Jae, "as the greatest player on earth," Bedsole averaged 10 yards per carry (725 yards on 72 carries) and passed for 462 yards and four TDs (33 completions out of 75 thrown) during the season. Hal was the city's leading scorer in 1959 with 115 points.

Hal Bedsole's scoring total of 115 points in 10 games, fell just 10 shy of the Los Angeles City High School record of 125, set by Bill Howard of Manual Arts in 1930. Bedsole, along with league players of the year — Larry Bryan (Eastern), Chuck Steel (Western), Steve Voigt (Northern), Curtis Bennett (Southern), Tom Gamer (East Valley) and Teruo Yamamoto (Marine) — will be on hand to receive their framed scrolls and medal axirards at the 23rd Annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 16th at 10:30 a.m. At this time all those players named for honors on both All-Los Angeles City and All-Southern California C.I.F. teams will be presented with their awards.

Banning High School, defending City Champions, which lost in a stunning upset to Fremont (25-19) in the city quarter-finals, led all city teams in placing men on the three teams for 1959. End Leonard Dufur and backs Teruo Yamamoto and Richard McMahon were the first team selections, while tackle Ray Avila and center Mike Ferragamo made the second team. Reseda High, West Valley title holders for 1959, and City finalists (lost to Huntington Park 46-6) placed player of the year Hal Bedsole at QB and tackle John VJalker on the first team, Steve Ogden, back on the second and center Jerry Myregard on the third squad. Reseda defeated Franklin, Northern League title holder, 15-0, and Southern League champion Fremont, 14-6, before bowing to Huntington Park in the finals.

Powerhouse Huntington Park High, juggernaut of Los Angeles City football for 1959, placed center-linebacker A.rlie "Skip" Husbands on the first squad along with Larry Bryan, Eastern League player of the year. Bryan, Coach Ray Vemoy's star left halfback, was a shining light in Huntington Park's win over Reseda in the City finals. He carried 13 times for 121 yards and a 9.3 average and two touchdowns. Teammate Craig Fertig, H.P. quarterback, who passed for 56 yards (4 of 5 completed) and averaged 5 yards on 11 carries, was named to the second All-City team. Tackle Brad Ohm was named to the third squad. Huntington Park averaged 37 points in five Eastern League games and 41 points in three 1959 playoff games.

Only three players repeated from last year's All-City teams. Marshall's Chano Lujan was again named to a third team guard spot; Steve Ogden, Reseda back, moved up a notch from his third team post last year, while "Skip" Husbands jumped to the first team from last year's third squad. Due to injury Fremont's Anthony Lorick did not make this year's team. He was City Player of the Year in 1958.

Franklin and Verdugo Hills, both of which came out on the long end of 4-1 records for 1959, placed three players each on the All-Northem League first team as selected by members of Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics at its annual meeting last week. Franklin, winner of the Northern title by virtue of a 13-7 win over Verdugo Hills, placed its star halfback Steve Voigt on the first team with "player of the year" tag firmly fastened on his jersey.

Coach Gus Spaker calls Voigt "the finest back I have had in 20 years of coaching and undoubtedly the most instrumental in vanning Franklin’s championship." Voigt's total yardage from running and passing amounted to 1278 yards, 540 passing and 738 running. He averaged 5.1 yards on the ground and scored nine TDs, while completing 23 of 50 passes for five TDs.

Seven players repeated on this year's All-Northern League team from last year. Bill Renison, Eagle Rock halfback, and Marshall's fine guard Chano Lujan, were on Last year's first team where they find themselves again. Tony Gomez, Lincoln end, Spencer Baughman, Verdugo Hills tackle, and Lincoln's QB, Art Arooha, moved up to this year's first team. Lance Gross and Ron Poplawski retained their second-team berths.

Two juniors made this season's first team, while four were named to the second squad. Marshall provided Tony Montapert and Wayne Healy, while Franklin willhave Claude Doty and Mike Masterman back in grid togs next year.

Final standings in the Northern League found Franklin and Verdugo Hills tiedwith 4-1 marks, Lincoln (3-1-1), Eagle Rock (2-2-1), Marshall (l-4), and Belmont (0-5). Franklin outscored Verdugo in regular season play, 102 to 95 points. Franklin lost its quarter-final game to Reseda, 15-0 in the City Playoffs.

Three East-Valley League schools placed three players each on this year’s first All-East Valley League team as selected by the Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics. Board members met to make their annual selections at Helms Hall last week, selecting Van Nuys1 top lineman and center Tom Gamer as "player of the year." The three schools to share 1959 honors on the All-East Valley team are North Hollywood, Van Nuys and champion Polytechnic.

Center Tom Gamer, off Winston Tucker's Van Nuys squad, was equally sharp on offense and defense and was a near-unanimous selection by league coaches as lineman of the year. Gamer, at 5*11" and 190 pounds was among the toughest linemen in the city ranks for 1959.

There were no repeaters from Van Nuys, San Fernando or North Hollywood on this year's team. Several boys now playing in the West Valley League were on last yearte All-Valley League team, however.

Four juniors were named on both the first and second teams, with Polytechnic, Grant and North Hollywood placing two players each among the lower classmen. Van Nuys also placed one junior on the second team, Jim Knapp.

Polytechnic, winner of the East-Valley championship, finished the league season with a 4-0 mark and going into the playoffs edged Van Nuys on first downs, although the final score stood 6-6. In the semi-finals, Poly lost to Huntington Park, Eastern League Champion, 32-7.

Here's how the league stood at the conclussion of 1959 firing: Polytechnic(4-0), Van Nuys (3-1), San Fernando (2-2), North Hollywood (1-3), and Grant (0-4).

For having been named East Valley's top player for the 1959 season, Tom Gamer will receive the Helms player of the year medal award at the 23rd annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 16th at 10:30 a.m.

Paul Huebner's Banning Pilots, which won the Marine League football title again in 1959 with a perfect 4-0 record, placed five players on this year's allleague team when members of the Helms Hall Board of High School Athletics met at Helms Hall to make their annual grid selections. The players from Banning named to the first team are all seniors, while three additional seniors were named to the second squad.

Two of Banning's players — tackle Ray Avila and fullback Richard McMahon — named to this year's first team are repeaters from last year. Avila was a first team choice in '58, while McMahon was on the second team. Other players to repeat from 1958 are Henry Ota (Gardena), Bob Duncan (Banning) and Don Vaughn of San Pedro, Both Ota and Duncan were second team selections in 1958, while Vaughn, also a '58 second-teamer, moved up to the first team.

Banning kept its Marine League supremecy alive in 1959, moving through the league season undefeated, only to drop a 25-19 decission to Fremont in the quarterfinals of the City Playoffs. Fremont was then defeated in the semis, 14-6 by Reseda, West Valley Champions.

Each member of this year's Marine League first team is a senior, with only two players on the second team returning next year. Charles Nester, Narbonne end and Gardena center, Sheldon Keith, are juniors. The final standings of the Marine League found Banning on top (4-0), with San Pedro (3-1), Narbonne (2-2), Gardena (1-3) and Jordan (0-4) following the leader. Banning scored 131 points in four league games to far outdistance the other league members in scoring.

On January 16th, Teruo Yamamoto will presented his Marine League Player of the Year award at the 23rd annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall.' All-Southem California and Los Angeles City High School football players will join noted grid personalities for the annual affair.
