AS WE GATHER
Zechariah prophesies the coming of King Jesus, whose reign is about
mercy, grace, life, and goodness, not about wrath, power, anger, or
violence. Sometimes we mistakenly think that unyielding wrath guarantees
change; self-condemnation begets correction; and power deserves
respect. But for Christians, it is only the gracious, gentle, merciful Jesus who
delivers us from our body of death. He is our divine respite in whom we
know kindness, goodness, and forgiveness.

Confession and Absolution

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Exhortation Hebrews 10:22; Psalm 124:8; Psalm 32:5 LSB 184
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our
sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
Confession of Sins LSB 184
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities
with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal
and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely
repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the
sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved
Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful
being.
Absolution [John 20:19–23] LSB 185
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and
ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of
you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I
forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and
of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

P Let us pray.
Gracious God, our heavenly Father, Your mercy attends us all our days.
Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world,

Old Testament Reading Zechariah 9:9–12
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
and he shall speak peace to the nations;
his rule shall be from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
today I declare that I will restore to you double.
R This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Psalm Psalm 145:1–14; antiphon: v. 19
R I will extol you, my God and King,
C and bless your name forever and ever.
R Every day I will bless you
C and praise your name forever and ever.
R Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
C and his greatness is unsearchable.
R One generation shall commend your works to another,
C and shall declare your mighty acts.
R On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
C and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
R They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
C and I will declare your greatness.
R They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
C and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
R The LORD is gracious and merciful,
C slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
R The LORD is good to all,
C and his mercy is over all that he has made.
R All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD,
C and all your saints shall bless you!
R They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
C and tell of your power,
R to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds,
C and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
July 5th 2020 Fifth Sunday of Pentecost pg. 7
R Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
C and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
R The LORD is faithful in all his words
C and kind in all his works.
R The LORD upholds all who are falling
C and raises up all who are bowed down.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Epistle Romans 7:14–25a
We know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin.
I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do
the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law,
that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within
me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have
the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not
do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now
if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within
me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at
hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my
members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making
me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man
that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God
through Jesus Christ our Lord!
R This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Matthew 11:25–30
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eleventh chapter.
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven
and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and
understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was
your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,
and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father
except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come
to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Apostles’ Creed
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Proper Preface
P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all
places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation,
humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming
obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead,
He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting.
Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of
heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising
You and singing:

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples
and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in
remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had
given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup
is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the
forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
Me.”
