Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to live in Greek housing? Most sororities require members to live inthe house for at least one year. However, every sorority has a different policyregarding living in the house so you should besure to ask about it during recruitment. Thecost of living in the house is comparable, ifnot cheaper, than living on or near campus.

Are there scholarshipsavailable for dues?

Yes! Every sorority offers scholarships andpayment plans, both need-based and merit-based, to cover the cost of dues and puttoward tuiton. These can range in size from afew hundred dollars to a few thousand dollarsand are offered not only by the individualchapters themselves, but also by theirrespective national organizations. Alumnae ofsororities generally do not want finances todeter quality women from participating inmembership, so they have establishednumerous sources of aid.

Is it possible to join asorority and still be involvedin other organizations?

Yes! Most sororities encourage and evenrequire their members to be involved in otherorganizations, whether it be on or off campus.

At GWU, there are hundreds of otherorganizations to join and while your sororitywill expect you to uphold your commitment

to them, they cherish the diversity you bringto the table and want you to participate in the

interests that make you who you are.

Page 32: GWU 2015 Panhellenic Lookbook

What should I ask duringrecruitment?

If you aren’t sure what to talk about duringRecruitment, here are some questions to ask

the sisters. Sororities want to learn about you,but you need to know about them too if you

want to know which one to join.

How did you know that this chapter was for you?During Recruitment, your Pi Rho Chis will tell you to look for the house that you feel a“connection” with. If you search too hard for this connection, or wait around for it tofind you, you may not even notice if you feel it. Many women find a home in a sororityfor very different reasons, so if you’re unsure of whether a house is right for you or not,ask the girl you’re talking to what the reason is that she joined.

What events do you hold to bring new memberscloser together? One of the primary reasons many women join sororities is to make lifelong friendshipswith like-minded women who have similar values. The new-member chairs willorchestrate gatherings to help you and your new sisters bond, so you can ask themabout the different events they have.

Do I need to go to all of the Recruitment Events?Yes! The objective of Recruitment is for you as a Potential New Member to learn asmuch as you can about the Greek community as well as each of the chapters, so that youcan make the best possible decision regarding membership. If you are on an NCAAsports team or have some other prior commitment during Recruitment week, please letyour Pi Rho Chi know as soon as possible so we can try to accommodate you!

If I participate in formal recruitment,am I obligated to join a sorority?

No. If you participate in Recruitment and decide during or at the end of the weekthat joining a sorority is not for you, you are not obligated to accept a bid or join

a sorority. We highly recommend that you keep an open mind when comingthrough Recruitment and trust that whatever is meant to happen will happen.

We have 11 outstanding NPC sororities on this campus, all with their ownstrong points and things that make them uniquely special. Joining any of these

sororities would mean seizing an incredible opportunity to serve, excel, and lead.

Recruitment Myths

“Some chapters on campus are just better thanothers.”

“If I know a sorority woman, the chapter isobligated to extend me a bid.”

“Both my mother & grandmother were in aparticular sorority, so I need to be in thatsorority as well."

Our campus has eleven chapters for a good reason - sothat you have eleven chapters to find your sisters. Eachone of you is unique, just as every chapter is unique. There is no such thing as a “bad” or “good" sorority - itcould only hurt you in the end. Go in with an open mind!FALSE

Individual chapter members cannot determine who thechapter will extend bids to. Just because you knowsomeone in a chapter does not mean that particularchapter is the right fit for you. That is the beauty ofRecruitment - you get to explore all of the options andfind the chapter best suited for your personality.FALSE

Just because the sorority was the right fit for yourfamily member doesn’t mean it will be the right fit foryou. It is crucial that you keep an open mind throughoutthe Recruitment process. By keeping your optionsopen, you increase your chances for a successfulRecruitment process.FALSE
