RANDY AND LINDA PORTER

Happy New Year to All !

Not Time to Ride Yet

For Some of Us We have had some good weather and also some bad

weather. Overall, I am not complaining. Hope you have made the best of whatever

weather has come your way. Did you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Linda and I spent most of the time with family and friends and we were blessed this year to

have our son, Tim, with us.

I want to welcome our new Couple of the Year – Beth and Tim Kruger. They

have been an asset to our Chapter and I feel that they will continue working hard for

Chapter B – Ohio. They will lend much to the new year. Also, greetings to our new

Individual of the Year, Susan Kennedy. Susan has been a leader in making sure our fall

ride and other rides have been spectacular. We appreciate all her hard work and know

that she will represent the Chapter in flying colors. We are sad to say goodby to Gail

Miller, our 2016 Individual of the Year, and Debbe and Larry Steinhilber, our

2016 Couple of the Year. They have served the chapter well and I know that they will

continue doing so. Thanks for all your hard work.

January is suppose to be pretty cold, but spring is only 90 days away. We have

Cabin Fever in February and hope that many plan to get away for it. Mohican Lodge is

beautiful and close for us. They have many things planned, so we won't be idle. Look for

details from the District soon. Sign up now if you haven't already done so.

We will soon be shining our bikes to get ready for the Mall Show, going on our $5.00

picnic ride, our District Picnic, sharing in many Chapter auctions, going on road trips, our

Progressive Dinner ride, our Children's ride to Med-Central, our Charity Fun Day, sharing

in other Chapter Teddy Bear rides, our monthly dinner rides, our fund raisers, our Charity

donations, our Fall “Leaf” Ride and many more activities. But, biggest of all will be the

OHIO BUCKEYE RALLY BEING HELD IN MANSFIELD. We have a busy schedule for

2017 and hope that you can participate in much of it. Of course, along with the joy of

doing the activities, we might – or should I say, we will be – calling on you for help.

We also want to encourage you to always be on the lookout for new members for

Chapter B. We are only as strong as our members are and we always welcome new ones.

So, don't be shy, talk about GWRRA and encourage friends, acquaintances new and old to

come see what we are all about. Do you have an old Wing World magazine? Why not

share it with someone at your doctor's office, at the hospital or some other place you

frequently visit (maybe even at the RV dealership – car dealership, etc.)! Let's make this a

new year for new members.

3

Linda and I took on a three-year CD commitment and we are on the down stretch of

those years. We want to thank you for your help and support as we got our feet wet. Not

all things went as we thought, but we have tried to meet “most or all” of “your” requests in

different areas of the Chapter workings. Thank you for your ideas and help.

As previously stated, this is the year for Ohio Buckeye Rally in Mansfield and this is

going to take the cooperation, help and support of Chapter members. We thank you in

advance for working on this venture. It is an honor to have the entire State of Ohio, along

with Michigan, Indiana and other states, come to our area. We hope that we will be able to

share the area with them and that they will have a fantastic time in Mansfield. We know

that we can count on you to make all visitors welcome so that they will not only come back

in 2018, but also during the year to explore on their own. We have many committees lined

up working on different aspects of the rally; BUT, there is still room for you – your ideas

and help are wanted and needed.

As CD, there is much I can say, but the most important is THANK YOU for being

part of our wonderful Chapter. Linda and I appreciate all of you. Keep your wonderful

smiles spreading cheer......as smiles change lives......make your smile count! Love you

all........

Randy and Linda

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS

AL & CATHY NIGHSWANDER

Hi, Friends.

January with its crappy weather and end of Christmas

festivities is a time of doldrums for many of us. I just looked

on line for ways to cure CABIN FEVER. Here are the 10

cures for us to do.

1. PLAN a mini get-away. (at Mohican Lodge, perhaps – Cabin Fever)

2. CREATE a centerpiece. (The theme is Wild, Wild West)

3. PLAY dress-up. (Dig out your oldest and farthest rally shirt)

4. PUT ON a talent show. (Talent or No Talent!!)

5. DESIGN and BUILD a mousetrap car.

6. CHALLENGE yourself with some fun games.

7. DINE with some awesome friends.

8. SHOP. (silent and regular auction and gift shop)

9. ADMIRE the beautiful scenery of the Mohican State Park.

10. Root for your favorite Chapter Couple of the year.

Ohio District Cabin Fever is a great time. It is on FEBRUARY 3-4, 2017 at MOHICAN

STATE LODGE. Spend one night or spend two. Whichever you choose, you won’t be

disappointed. AND it is true, if you want to be challenged and laugh some, help our

chapter in the centerpiece, mousetrap car, or talent show!! They are all a great time. The

games are fun too!! We, Chapter B, want to be visible and recognized for our

awesomeness as we prepare for the Ohio District Rally!!

A. Call for reservations: 1-800-282-7275 (tell them you are with GWRRA)

B. Fill out the online registration form on the Ohiodistrict.com website or print and

mail the form and money.

C. Pack your overnight bag.

See you there, Al and Cathy

SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS – TED &

JOYCE STRUTZ

First of all, let me say that we hope everyone had a great

and safe holiday season. May the New Year bring all peace

and prosperity and a safe riding season when it gets

here. And of course we can't forget to mention the

snowbirds that are having some extra riding season!

5

It's easy to become complacent when riding behind other riders. There doesn't seem to

be the same sense of urgency to actively scan the road or look to the mirrors as when we

ride solo. Instead, while riding in a group, eyes tend to fixate on bikes ahead, and when we

slip into "follow" mode, it's easy to settle in, let our guard down and let others lead. That's

about the time at the first hint of a passing zone or straightaway an impatient driver from

behind swoops out and passes, surprising the living daylights out of us. That effect repeats

one after another as the car blasts by each unsuspecting rider in line. It gets particularly

interesting when the overtaking driver suddenly realizes he can't pass all the riders before

the passing zone ends.

How can we minimize risk in these scenarios? By taking an active role and riding our

own ride, even when following others. Make the dashed lines of every passing zone a

mental trigger to consult the left mirror. Always know if there is a driver behind you. Pick

up on aggressive behavior; if a vehicle approaches quickly or tailgates, expect them to

abruptly overtake at the first opportunity as your first defense. When riding curves, make

a point to check mirrors as you slow and, at the moment the road straightens again, that is

the time to look for that driver to pop out and pass. Is your group about to make a left

turn? A mirror and head check could save your life if that driver pulls out to pass just as

you all begin to exit left. Expect them, look for them and plan for them. Because, whether

you're ready or not, here they come!

As Red Green use to say “It is Winter” . We just don’t have quality TV like the Red Green

Show from a few years’ back. Anyway, this weather might be good for some motorcycle

maintenance. I could change the air filter in the old 1100 Gold Wing in about 5

minutes..now, changing the air filter in the 1800 takes somewhere around 3 to 4 hours –

Progress, eh!!

We are looking forward to attending Cabin Fever at Mohican State Lodge, February 3rd

and 4th

. This is always a great time to get away for the weekend and enjoy all the fun and

games, good company and great food. This is the 1st time it has been held at Mohican

Lodge, so we hope they have a great attendance. Hope we see a lot of you there, whether it

is for one day or an overnight stay. As always, we’ll be preparing a centerpiece, building a

mousetrap car, participate in the games and visiting with some old friends.

See you Soon

Bad Work Excuses

Thinking of skipping work? Don’t try these real excuses—they didn’t work

the first time.

• My false teeth flew out the window while I was driving down the highway.

• I quit smoking and I’m grouchy.

• My favorite football team lost on Sunday, so I needed Monday to recover.

• I received a threatening phone call from the electric company and needed to

report it to the FBI.

• I got lost and ended up in a different state.

SUNSHINE LADY – BARB HOWARD

I suppose by now everyone is so over the Holidays! The

decorations have been taken down and packed away, some

gifts returned and after Christmas shopping done, even the

New Years’ resolutions that were made, have equally been

broken and forgotten! But, being a creature of habit, I find I

always have trouble letting go of the past and embracing the new as quickly as some. I am

usually the last one in the neighborhood to take down the lights. I could use my

procrastination as an excuse, but the truth is, I just really like them! They provide a warm,

fuzzy and romantic feel to an otherwise cold, stark and dreary January. Combine that

with the fact that we didn't even have snow over the Holidays. So, the lights are still

burning. They give us the opportunity to remember the good and bad times during the

past and to look forward to all of the new adventures awaiting us just around the corner!

We can dream of sunny rides ahead with good friends, and envy the others who are

enjoying their rides now! It is only a matter of time before it will be our turn again. So for

now, Happy Birthdays, Happy Anniversaries and Good Health until we meet again.

See you soon, Barb

A defendant isn’t happy with how things are going in court, so he gives the

judge a hard time.

Judge: “Where do you work?”

Defendant: “Here and there.”

Judge: “What do you do for a living?”

Defendant: “This and that.”

Judge: “Take him away.”

Defendant: “Wait; when will I get out?”

Judge: “Sooner or later.”
