Mission StatementIn partnership with our citizens, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation provides high quality, broad-based parks, facilities, programs and services creating a sense of community, enabling a safe and secure environment, and enhancing Gwinnett’s quality of life. The department promotes recreational opportunities to improve the quality of life for all citizens in Gwinnett County and makes reasonable modifications to programs, services or activities when necessary to promote participation by persons with disabilities.

SPLOST Success – Pennies for parksIn 2016, Gwinnett County voters approved the renewal of the Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). First approved in 1996, the one-cent sales tax is essential in preserving green space and natural resources in Gwinnett Coutny. This funding has provided many new trails, playgrounds, sports fields, aquatic centers and gymnasiums to improve the quality of life for Gwinnett's citizens.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation believes ALL members of the community should have access to fun, healthy, positive recreation. Therapeutic Recreation offers specialized and inclusive community-based programs for individuals with special needs. We seek to provide residents who have physical, economic and or behavioral challenges the opportunity to participate in competitive sporting events, specialized classes, creative activities and special events.

Therapeutic Recreation exposes participants to new experiences to increase self-esteem and self-confidence and to promote community involvement and independence. That’s what Therapeutic Recreation is all about! For more

Specialized Programs are open to everyone, but are designed to meet the unique needs of individuals with physical, mental and/or emotional disabilities. Programs include sporting activities, adaptive aquatics, arts & crafts and much more!

Inclusive Programs provide reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities upon request. Successful participation and accommodations will only be possible with the commitment of both the recreation staff and the participants. A reasonable accommodation is assistance provided to aid individuals with disabilities with their participation. Some minimum eligibility requirements may be required in order to participate. With a reasonable accommodation, an individual can meet the basic need or essential requirements for participation. Participants are asked to notify the recreation department regarding any and all accommodations necessary for participation at least two weeks prior to the program start date. Softball is offered four seasons per year and games are played at Best Friend Park 2 Bethesda Park17 E. E. Robinson Park49 and George Pierce Park 7 All leagues will consist of a ten game schedule. All softball seasons are $480/team. In the spring season, a county softball tournament is offered for $120/team.

Coed Volleyball is offered for three seasons (spring, fall and winter) and all games are played on Sundays at Rhodes Jordan Park Gym 15 Each season consists of ten games, plus a single elimination tournament. Spring volleyball $300/team.

Aquatics Guidelines • Children 10 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult (18-up) in a swimsuit. • Children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult (18-up) in a swimsuit in the water and within arms reach of the child(ren). • Children who are not potty trained must wear plastic or vinyl training pants over their swim diapers. • All patrons who enter a facility must pay admission fee (even if not swimming). • There is no re-entry. • Swimsuits are required to swim. • Groups with children 7-10 years of age must have one adult in a swimsuit for every 10 children. • Groups with children 6 years of age and under must have one adult (18-up) in a swimsuit and in the water for every three children. For capacity reasons, all out-of-county inclusive groups are only allowed admittance to Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation Aquatic facilities after 4:00pm.

breath control, underwater exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, kicks and arm strokes on back, short breaths of air, introduction to lifejackets and pool rules. (Exit Skills: Child must have the correct kick with legs extended behind them, attempted

coordinated arm stroke and take at least three breaths of air to be in this class.)

Preschool 2 (Intermediate Preschool) • Ages 4 – 5 years • Must pass Preschool 1Skills include front/back kicks, under water exploration, front/back glide, coordinated arm strokes, arm strokes on back, rhythmic breathing, and elementary backstroke. (Exit Skills: Child must be able to swim five yards with coordinated arm stroke and rhythmic breathing, and five yards on back to be considered for the next level.)

Preschool 3 (Advanced Preschool) • Ages 4 – 5 years • Must pass Preschool 2 Skills include treading water using arms and legs for 15 seconds, changing direction of swimming while on front or back and rhythmic breathing for the front crawl. (Exit Skills: Child must be able to push off and swim using combined arm and leg action on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths to be considered for the next level.)

Level 1, 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) • Ages 6 – 12 • No water skills necessaryLearn basics of swimming including entering/exiting the water, holding your breath underwater, supported and unsupported front/back float, flutter kicking, alternating arm strokes front/back, submerging in chest deep water, coordinated arm stroke front/back, explore deep water. (Exit Skills: 1. Move into a front float and hold for 5 seconds, roll to a back float position for five seconds and return to standing position. 2. Push off and swim using a combination of arm/leg actions for 15 feet on the front; push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 15 feet on the back.)

Swim Lessons Gwinnett County residents can register beginning 12/1, $51. Non-Gwinnett residents can register beginning 12/4, $71 ($20 additional fee for non-Gwinnett residents). Classes for ages six months – up meet for 30 minutes, two times a week (M, W or TU, TH) for 4 weeks. Class times vary. Saturday lessons are available at select locations and meet for 40-50 minutes, once a week for 4 to 6 weeks depending on the facility. Each person may only register for or be registered for one session and class at a time. GCPR reserves the right to change class times and offerings prior to registration due to instructor and facility availability.

Adult Group Swim Lessons Lessons available at all year-round pool facilities.

Level 3 (Stroke Development) • Must pass Level 1, 2Skills include jumping in deep water, head-first entries, retrieving an object from the bottom, rotary breathing, front/back glide for distance, treading water for 30 seconds, changing body position in deep water, front/back crawl, and butterfly kick. (Exit Skills: 1. Jump into deep water, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in water and rotary breathing, maintain position by treading water or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl for 15 yards. 2. Elementary backstroke arms 15 feet.)

Level 4, 5 (Stroke Improvement and Stroke Refinement) • Must pass Level 3Skills include diving from side, long shallow dive and glide, swimming underwater, floating for time, open turns and flip turns from wall, treading water for time, front/back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, swimming underwater, surface dives, survival swimming for time, swim all strokes for distance. (Exit Skills: 1. Perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, tread water for two minutes and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. 2. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, tread water for two minutes and swim back crawl for 50 yards.)

Level 6 (Basic Water Safety and Lifeguard Readiness) • Must pass Level 4, 5Skills include swimming all strokes for distance, open/flip turns, surface dives, basic water safety, various training techniques. (Exit Skills: 1-Swim 500 yards continuously using front crawl 100 yards; back crawl 100 yards; breaststroke 50 yards; elementary backstroke 50 yards: sidestroke 50 yards: butterfly 50 yards: and your choice of stroke 100 yards. 2-Swim 20 yards to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards to the starting point while holding onto the object.)

Stroke Clinic 1 • Must pass Level 4, 5Participants will do technique work on kicks, arm strokes, rhythmic breathing, practice flip turns, butterfly, breaststroke and starts necessary to be a competitive swimmer. (Exit Skills: Swim 300 yards continuously using the 4 competitive stroke in the following order: butterfly 50 yards, front crawl 100 yards, back crawl 100 yards, breaststroke 50 yards. Perform shallow dive from the block and demonstrate front flip turn.)

Adult Classes (Ages 13 - up with little or no water experience.) American Red Cross Adult Swim is intended for teens and adults who wish to improve their knowledge and skill for many reasons. It may be to overcome their fear of the water and to learn the basic skills and achieve a minimum level of water competency to improve their skill and technique either to increase their level of safety to improve their health and fitness or to perhaps compete in triathlons or to join a master’s team.

Adult 1 (Learning the Basics Intro to Water Skills) • Ages 13 – up • Little or no water experienceSkills include holding your breath underwater, bobbing in chest-deep water, supported and unsupported front/back kicks, supported

and unsupported front/back kicks, floating, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, front/back crawl, front/back glide. (Exit Skills: 1-Flutter kick and rhythmic breathing with kickboard 10 yards. 2-Swim on front 10 yards using either a front crawl or breaststroke. 3-Swim on back using either back crawl or elementary backstroke.

Adult 2 (Improving Skills and Swimming Stroke Development) • Ages 13 – up • Must pass Adult 1Skills include treading water, front/back coordinated arm stroke, rhythmic breathing, elementary backstroke,

breaststroke, sidestroke, endurance, and swimming in deep water.

Adult 3 (Swimming for Fitness) • Ages 13 – up • Must pass Adult 2Skills include refinement of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststrokes. Gain profeciency open and flip turns and to build endurance. Teaches skills and concepts needed to stay safe in, on, and around the water.

After being destroyed by fire, it was reconstructed in 1855 and was later converted into a ‘civic center’ for community activities, and at one time, housed a local radio station! It houses the Gwinnett History Museum, with exhibits relating to early Gwinnett County farming, textiles, schools, and more!

This former cotton farm is relatively unchanged since its drawing in the 1820 land lottery. In the early 1900’s, it was a thriving farm. Levi J. Loveless and was one of 1,262 water-powered mills in the state during that time. After the Loveless brothers ran the mill, W. Scott Freeman and his son, Winfield, owned it until it was purchased in 1915 by Newt

Pharr. By 1996, it was said to be one of only 15 mills in the state in working order and the only one in Gwinnett County. The county purchased the mill from the Pharr family in 2001 and in 2009 restored the mill and surrounding

12 acres for education and recreational use.
