WELCOME TO FESTIVAL 2018! A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival Association, I am pleased to welcome audiences, participants and adjudicators to the 2018 Victoria Performing Arts Festival. This is the 91st year of the Festival, a measure of its success in the performing arts community in Greater Victoria. We are part of a large festival community. There are now 231 local festivals across Canada which featured over 23,000 performers last year. In British Columbia, there are 32 separate festivals in various communities. Our Victoria Festival provides a platform for progression of our registrants to the Provincial

and National Festivals, and if history is any indication, their achievements on those stages are impressive. Those results provide impetus to our many volunteers and the Board.

This past year has been marked by several major decisions made by our Board. We were fortunate to be able to engage Fuchsia Shier to assist in the office. Fuchsia will be taking over the Office Adminis-trator position when Lynne Picard retires in June this year. We have integrated a new database to better organize the information which is key to our Festival. The number of highlight concerts has been re-duced to 10 by combining several disciplines. As well, the Board is engaged in updating our strategic plan.

This year Festival begins on April 4 and concludes on May 12, 2018. During those weeks adjudicated sessions will take place in disciplines such as dance, speech arts, voice, choral, bands, ethnic dance, composition, and include instruments ranging from piano, guitar, woodwinds, brass, fiddle and strings. Our Highlight Concerts, concluding with the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship Concert on May 12th, give audiences a stage to enjoy and applaud the exceptional talent, and provide valued performance opportunity for young artists. I am also excited to tell you that Victoria will be hosting the 2018 Provincial Festival from May 29 to June 2, when over 500 winners from all parts of British Columbia will perform before adjudicators. Three concerts will highlight the exceptional calibre of dance and music from BC. You will not be disappointed! Be sure to check our website for concert dates and times. The Festival owes its success over the years to numerous dedicated persons, some of whom have been active in various capacities for over 40 years, a tribute to their love of the performing arts. There are hundreds of volunteers who make Festival a success each year. Festival relies on our loyal and generous donors who sustain us. They are comprised of individual patron, award donors, sponsors, foundations and granting agencies. They are listed elsewhere in this Program. We are grateful for their support for the arts. We invite you to join us at Highlight Concerts where the talent being presented is celebrated. As President, I wish to thank all those who encourage and support our initiatives. To our performers during Festival 2018, I wish you every success. John Sterk, President

Thank you to all of our volunteers! Festival owes its success and longevity to the ongoing support of over 300 volunteers annually. Our teams of dedicated volunteers undertake essential tasks including governance, fundraising, awards management, publicity, media, grant applications, sponsor management, volunteer management, scheduling performances and staging over 2,000 performances that take place in eleven different venues across Victoria.

We would also like to thank our student participants, their teachers and accompanists. The amazing performances that make up Festival represent countless hours of instruction and practice. Thank you to all of the participants for sharing your talent through Festival.

Thank you!

Intermediate and Senior Strings Adjudicator

Toni Stanick

Toni Stanick has worn many hats throughout her extensive career. Currently a member of the Vancouver Opera and Film Orchestras, she has appeared onstage as an orchestral, chamber and solo violinist, in the studio recording for film, television and on disc, with legends including Michael Buble, Bryan Adams and Diana Krall. As a composer, she has written works for chamber orchestra, solo violin and modern dance. Her work as composer/performer for the ballet La Beaute du Diable toured Canada and the Cannes International Festival of Dance to critical acclaim. Her passion as an educator has led to students winning full scholarships to Juilliard, Colburn, Shulich, U of BC and U of Victoria Schools of Music, being broadcast nationally on CBC and King FM, as well as garnering trophies and scholarships at Municipal, Provincial and National competitions and festivals. Her graduates perform in major orchestras world-wide. She has acted in the role of adjudicator throughout British Columbia. In 2010 she launched JOY of MUSIC, a benefit concert designed to showcase outstanding student talent and develop philanthropy in youth. The JOY initiative, in 4 concerts, raised funds of close to $14,000 for the research and treatment of childhood cancer.

Praised for her "effortless lyric soprano of sumptuous beauty with perfect diction, and a graceful, expressive stage presence”, Eve-Lyn de la Haye has made her mark among the Canadian sopranos of her generation. She has performed leading roles with Vancouver Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, and Calgary Opera and is a frequent soloist with the Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Bach Choir, and the West Coast Symphony. Ms de la Haye is a graduate of the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto’s Opera Division and is an alumna of the Aldeburgh Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival, the International Vocal Arts Institute, and the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. She has represented the GVPAF in Provincial and National Voice, and is a Rosebowl winner and former competitor in the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship Competition. Ms de la Haye settled in East Vancouver in 2013 with her husband and two young children where she is also a teaching artist for Vancouver Opera.

Pianist Jane Coop is one of Canada’s most prominent and distinguished artists. At the age of nineteen she won First Prize in the CBC Radio’s national competition and this, along with First Prize at the Washington International Competition, launched her career. Her principal teachers for advanced studies were Anton Kuerti and Leon Fleisher. She has played in over twenty countries, in such eminent halls as the Bolshoi Hall in St. Petersburg, the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Beijing Concert Hall and the Salle Gaveau (Paris). Coop is a cherished faculty artist at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. Her commitment to teaching is centred around her long-time position at the University of British Columbia’s School of Music, where she was senior professor and Head of the Piano Division for over 30 years. Coop has been an invited jury member for international piano competitions in Can-ada, the USA (New York, Washington, Salt Lake City), China and Great Britain. Her sixteen CD recordings have garnered glowing reviews and have been heard on classical radio programs in many countries. In 2012, Jane Coop was appointed to the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest honour for lifetime achievement.

A Canadian Violinist, Thomas Williams is a former Associate Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at the Schuich School of Music of McGill University. In addition to an active performing career as a violinist and violist, Mr. Williams is a well-known adjudicator, and a jury member. He has for many years worked with the National Orchestra of Canada, and has participated as a performer and teacher at numerous other music festivals in Canada including Orford and the International Music Institute. Prof. Williams’ teaching association with McGill began in 1981. He assumed the position of String Area Chair in 1986, where he has been instrumental in developing a highly successful string program at McGill University.
