Common issues of the development of urban public transports

Sopron & Humenné

• One conclusion is, that public transport - based on hydrogen - is not feasible from financial point of view. Neither in a complex nor in a more simple configuration.

In case of Sopron, dealing with one hybrid FC bus, the ROI is poor; despite the fact only operation and maintenance costs are taken into account. (production & other equipment is subsidized

by the state)

Ferrara

• Similarly to the Italian partner, smaller and more simple solutions are sought

• They should be based on already available technologies / equipment (bio-diesel trains), or should utilize more mature RES harvesting technologies (PV)

Ferrara

• Of course there is no „good” solution, in case of bio-fuels e.g. we face moral issues – food supply.

• Opportunities of photovoltaic cells to be utilized in transport are very limited.

• These disadvantages need to be taken in return for the possibility of direct implementation or more user friendly prices.

• Currently the investment and operational costs of hydrogen driven vehicles (fuel cell), including their auxiliary equipments (filling station) are still very expensive

• On long-term, with the development of fuel-cells their utilization may become a competitive alternative

One possible mid-termplan for Sopron

• Similarly to the Italian thinking, a more simple and realistic technology and infrastructure could be useful for Sopron, namely CNG.

• Landfill gas and bio-gas are available at the landfill and wastewater treatment facilities of the city – respectively.

• Utilization of CNG has strong political support, excise tax of automotive CNG is zero percent.

• There is Hungarian experience available regarding the use and CNG buses, as well for the production of bio-methane.

One possible mid-termplan for Sopron

•Such a solution would be more cost-friendly, but still a green initiative, fitting into the frames of GUTS.

•Furthermore, the passenger satisfaction could increase considerably. According to the public opinion poll conducted, one major factor selected by passengers, for using PT instead of cars was the demand for modern vehicles.

•Grants for financing renewable energy based projects are scheduled to start in the beginning of 2013.
