“The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities, which are in actuality carried out by Nature.”

“The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.”

IGNORANCE PASSION GOODNESS PURE GOODNESS

General Characteristics

Foolishness, helplessness, illusion, inertia, madness, indolence and sleep.

Unlimited, uncontrollable desires and longings, intense endeavor, bondage to material fruitive activities and attachment to the results of action.

Relative purity, equipoise, illumination, happiness and freedom from sinful reactions. Conducive to real knowledge.

Complete, unmotivated, uninterrupted devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Absolute knowledge, purity, illumination, happiness and freedom from reactions.

Spiritual practice (and duties in general)

Performed faithlessly, without regard for authoritative advice.

Performed proudly, ostentatiously, for the sake of some material end or benefit (such as elevation to the heavenly kingdom).

Performed as a duty, according to scriptural regulations, and with no expectation of reward.

Performed according to scriptural injunctions, and under the guidance of the spiritual master, to please the Supreme Lord.

Knowledge Very meager. Unrelated to the Absolute Truth. Breeds attachment to one kind of work as all in all. Concerned only with bodily comforts, eating, sleeping, mating and the struggle for existence, and so resembles the knowledge of animals.

Gives rise to speculative doctrines and theories through which one sees the body as the self and consciousness as a temporary by-product of the body. Rules out the existence of the eternal individual soul within.

Gives rise to a vision of one undivided spiritual force within the bodies of all living beings.

Enables one to see all living beings as eternal, individual, spiritual parts and servants of the Supreme Being, Krishna.

IGNORANCE PASSION GOODNESS PURE GOODNESS

Austerity Performed foolishly by means of obstinate self-torture, or to destroy or injure others.

Performed ostentatiously to gain respect, honor and reverence. Brings only unstable, temporary results.

Performed with faith and without desires for one’s material benefit. Bodily Austerities: cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy, nonviolence, offering of respect to the demigods, brahmanas, spiritual master, and superiors like the mother and father. Austerities of Speech: speaking beneficially, truthfully and inoffensively and with reference to Vedic authorities. Mental Austerities: Serenity, simplicity, gravity, self-control and purity of thought, detaching the mind from sense gratification.

Performed with faith and with a desire to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Renunciation Consists of giving up one’s prescribed duties because of illusion.

Consists of giving up one’s prescribed duties because of fear or because they appear troublesome.

Consists of performing one’s prescribed duties because they ought to be done and abandoning attachment to the fruits of one’s work.

Consists of performing one’s prescribed duties in Krishna Consciousness and employing the fruits of one’s work for the satisfaction of Krishna.

Charity Performed at an improper time and place, to an unworthy person like a gambler or drunkard, or contemptuously, without respect.

Performed to get something in return, like prestige. Or driven by “extended-ego” motives like nationalism, etc. Or given in a grudging mood.

Performed as a duty, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person and with no expectation of material returns.

Performed only to please the Supreme Lord.

Impulse to Action

Anarchic, perhaps violent, distressing to others. Performed in illusion, without consideration of scriptural injunctions or future bondage and consequences. Results in further foolishness. Characterized by a sense of helplessness.

Performed under false-ego, and with great effort, to satisfy one’s desires to enjoy the fruits of his work. Results in stress.

Performed under scriptural regulations, as a matter of duty, without attachment, and without love and hate, by one who renounces the fruits of his actions. Results in purification.

Performed solely for the satisfaction of Krishna and the spiritual master.

Determination Cannot go beyond daydreaming, fearfulness, lamentation, moroseness and illusion.

Fixed upon securing the fruits of religion, economic development and sense gratification.

Practically unbreakable. Sustained by steadfastness in yoga, which controls the activities of the mind, life and senses.

Fully engaged in Krishna Consciousness and never deviated by anything else.

Work Negligent, whimsical, disregards scriptural advice. Materialistic, obstinate, cheating, lazy, morose, procrastinating and expert in insulting others.

Attached to the fruits of his work and intent on enjoying them. Greedy, envious and unclean. Entangled by happiness when successful and distress when unsuccessful. Heedless of whether his work is pure or impure.

Free from material attachments, pride and false-ego. Enthusiastic, resolute and not swayed by success or failure.

Unconditionally serves Krishna and the spiritual master under any and all circumstances.

Objects of worship

The Occult. Ghosts and spirits.

Hero-worship of powerful men and self-proclaimed imitation gods and titans.

The demigods and the impersonal conception of God.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead.

IGNORANCE PASSION GOODNESS PURE GOODNESS

Understanding Considers irreligion to be religion, and religion to be ignorance. Strives always in the wrong direction.

Misguided, confused and imperfect. Cannot distinguish between religion and irreligion, truth and untruth and what should and should not be done.

Intelligently discriminates, under scriptural direction, between what is to be done and not to be done, what is to be feared and not to be feared, and what is liberating and what is binding.

Always perfectly considers Krishna through personal realization, confirmed by the scriptures and the spiritual master.

Happiness Blind to self-realization, delusion from beginning to end. Comes about from over-sleep, dissipated habits, and illusion.

Derived from contact of the senses with their objects. Seems like nectar at first but poison at the end. Epitomized by sexual enjoyment.

Bitter medicine: compared to poison in the beginning but nectar at the end because it involves control of the mind and senses but awakens one to self-realization.

Derived from service rendered by a purified soul to the Supreme Personality of Godhead in an eternal loving relationship. Ever-increasing ecstasy. Unparalleled by any mundane experience or emotion.

Food habits Tasteless, stale, putrid, decomposed, unclean. Eaten long after the food is cooked. Remnants of the meals of others. Meat, fish, eggs and liquor.

Too bitter, sour, salty, pungent, rich, dry or hot. Causes pain, distress and disease.

Increases longevity, purifies one’s existence, gives strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Nourishing, sweet, juicy, fattening and palatable. Milk products, grains, sugar, fruit and vegetables.

Frees one from past sinful reactions and protects one from future contamination. Invokes one’s dormant Krishna Consciousness. Prepared by devotees according to scriptural injunctions and offered with devotion to the Supreme Lord. Remnants of the meal of a saintly person or the spiritual master.

“The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil amongst various species.”

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”
