Colonialism in Gulliver’s Travels

• A Voyage to Lilliput

• In Lilliput, Gulliver bound by innumerable tiny people.• He is Source of entertainment for the Emperor of Lilliput.• Lilliputians are people who revelin displays of authority and performance of power.

A Voyage to Brobdingnag• A Farmer brings Gulliver home and treats him as a Curiosity and exhibits him for Money.• When he was sick, Farmer sells him to the Queen of Realm.• Queen make ‘Travelling Box’ for Gulliver as a symbol of Confinement.

A Voyage to Laputa• He rescued by flying Island.• Here, he visits Balnibarbi , blind pursuit of Science without Practical results – satire on Royal society.• Then, he went to Glubbdubdrib, magician’s dwelling and discusses history with the ghosts of historical figures.• In Luggnagg, he encounters the Struldbrugs, people who are immortal.

A Voyage to the Country of Houyhnhnms

• Here, he meets Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses.• They are rulers , while the deformed creatures called Yahoos, human beings in their base form.• Here, we can see Houyhnhnms as colonizers and Yahoos as colonized people.
