There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who are Irish and those who wish they were.
Many times, a man’s mouth has broken his nose.
The Irish gave bagpipes to the Scots as a joke. They have yet to get the joke.

President’s Report
As our association embarks on a new fiscal year, we see our operating budget increase around $17,000. Gull Aire continues to be very strong financially, this was evident in 2017 by funding many necessary projects while maintaining all of our reserve funds. We continue to strategically plan for the future of our community. Even with the budget increase, we will continue to earmark approximately $35,000 towards our reserves annually. The following line items made up most of the increase.
• Repair maintenance buildings ($6100), we have continued to spend more in this category over the past few years. We increased the budget $4,000 to more accurately reflect our spending.
• Legal ($5900), we have seen an increase in legal advice, lien, and foreclosure preparation. It cost money for representation and preparing the appropriate legal documents that are required to proceed through the court system. We increased the budget $4,000 to cover these costs. On the flip side, we have increased our legal fee reimbursements budget line $5,000.
• Utilities/Water ($7003), To establish a healthier lawn around the clubhouse and a longer lifespan of our plants/shrubs, we have been increasing the frequency of irrigation. We have also stepped up our fertilization program. We have neglected these areas in the past and our lawn and shrubs have paid the price. We will monitor this closely to ensure the funds appropriated meet the desired results. The increase in the budget was $5,000.

Gull Aire Social Club President’s Report Hopefully all the cold weather is behind us. It seems to be getting warmer now, so we can all get back in the pool, not all at once though. February started with Night at the Races. There was a large crowd in attendance and it looked like everyone was having fun. This event will be put on three times again this year. If last year was any indication, there will be a full house each time. For March we have something for everyone. At our Social Club meeting on March 6th, we will have our election of Officers. Please attend the meeting and cast your vote. On the 9th we have the Dinner Cruise on the Starlite Majesty. This is always a great cruise around Clearwater. The sights are breath taking and the food is delicious. Everyone always enjoys it. Don’t forget to come on out and socialize with your friends and neighbors and enjoy the food at the Village Café on the 16th. The St Patrick’s Day dance is on the 17th and back by popular demand is the Gordy & Debbie Show on the 23rd. To round out the month there will be an Active Shooter presentation from the Sheriff’s Department on the 24th. To fill in the month there is Bunco, Bingo, Karaoke, Game Night and a host of other activities. It is impossible not to have fun in Gull Aire Village. Please, always keep checking the bulletin board and the calendar on the tripod for events and classes. Any changes will always be on there. Also check the calendar on the Gull Aire Village web site. We look forward to seeing everyone have an enjoyable time this month and next month I will have a report on our Caribbean Cruise. Dale Mathurin

Practice has resumed each Thursday at 10:00 AM now that the cold weather and rescheduling of cancelled games has ended. February was an exciting and fun filled month for us. We had a “shuffalapaloooza” game on Feb. 22nd with coffee and pastries before the games and lunch served after. On the same day, we had our team pictures taken wearing our brand-new team shirts. Thank you to Doug and Debbie Campbell for their hard work in getting the new team shirts, provided by Ameritech “free of charge”! They are beautiful! We will continue to make playing shuffleboard fun for everyone. Thanks to all those who make these activities possible. So, come on out and join the fun! Alice Szczur

Restaurant reviews, book reviews, interesting side trips or other articles that would be interesting to your neighbors. We know that we have authors and artists in our community. How about a poem, short story (one page), or pictures?
Please help us to make the Gull Aire Voice a true community publication.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the residents that continue to save cans that we redeem for Oldsmar Cares. We can only recycle, for cash, aluminum cans. We are finding all types of cans (non-aluminum) as well as other trash in the donated bags and clubhouse receptacles. These all must be separated, before we can take them to the recycler, and it takes a lot of time. Please continue to save aluminum cans for us but place all others in your recycle bin. Thank You Mickey Stewart
A HISTORY MINUTE
Kind GAV resident Bill Andre has loaned his copy of a 1992 community phone directory for display in the Gull Aire History clubhouse case.
This directory is a combined effort with listings for Blue Jay Estates, Bay's End Manor, Countryside Estates, and Gull Aire. This was the last combined phone directory in which GAV participated.
In that 1992 book, GAV has 370 separate addresses, as compared with 431 in the previously discovered 1994 book. Of those 370 listings......39 residents are still living and listed in our current 2017-2018 Dial Directory, albeit, many being surviving spouses only. That's still over 10% still alive and kicking (gently) to this day!
We are still looking for a 1993 Dial Directory, which would be the very first stand-alone GAV directory. If anyone has Edition #1 of the GAV Dial Directory, and would like to donate it OR lend it to our collection of "historical stuff", please contact me at [email protected] see Alice in the office.

CONCERNED ABOUT FALLING?
“A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” is a FREE program designed to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.
This program will be offered in Gull Aire Village, beginning on April 9th. During the class, participants will learn to view falls and fear of falling as preventable and set realistic goals for increasing safety and activity. You will also learn ways to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.
The program consists of twice a week, 2-hour sessions, for 4 weeks. The FREE classes will begin on Monday, April 9th, 2-4 pm. Classes will continue every Monday and Wednesday, from 2-4 pm, and the program will end on May 2nd. Participants should be willing to attend at least 6 of the 8 classes during the 4 weeks. Space is still available, and preregistration is required.
If you are interested, please provide your name, phone number and e-mail address on the sign-up sheet in the clubhouse. Students will receive a reminder call or e-mail prior to April 9th.
If you have any additional questions, please contact Maryann at 727-786-4087.
• One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year.
• Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
• Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
• Falls result in more than 28 million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths.
• The financial total for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 Billion by 2020.
• Falls with or without injury also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation and feelings of helplessness.

BREAKING NEWS – Gull Aire Resident Evicted
After a surprise encounter with the landscapers, and uninvited visits to neighbor’s backyards, a trapper was contacted to remove a large gator. It took two days to bait and catch this 11 footer from our large pond. The trapper feels this is still not the “big one” that resides in that area. According to this trapper, the animal will be sold to a gator farm.

OLDSMAR LEISURE SERVICES SEEKS CITIZENS INPUT
Input from residents is always
appreciated regarding "leisure activities" involving our parks and senior events.
The Oldsmar Leisure Services Advisory Board meets on the 2nd Monday of each month, 6PM, at the Municipal Services Building on Commerce (just past Goodwill.) Citizen's open forum starts each meeting with the Director of the Leisure Services Department always present. While the 11-member board of citizens is only an "advisory" board, we do send suggestions to the City Council for their consideration.
The LSAB is where your voice can be heard respectfully. Don't grumble to your neighbor. Come and grouse at us! We appreciate positive suggestions!!

SHOW PALACE EASTER TRIP
On Easter Sunday, the Gull Aire Village “Day Trippers” will be carpooling to the Show Palace in Hudson, FL to experience an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Rodgers & Hammerstein extravaganza. Let’s join the Show Palace as they present the most beloved musical songbooks of all time! We have obtained outstanding seating (midway between the stage and the buffet tables).
As is the custom, it is an “all you can eat buffet.” The buffet dinner is a wonderful selection from meats, fish, pasta, assorted salads and vegetables. Several dessert choices are available, along with coffee or tea. There is also an open bar that will accommodate those who wish to purchase adult beverages from the bar.
DATE: Sunday, April 1, 2018
TIME: 11:30 a.m.
LOCATION: Meet at the GAVA Clubhouse if you are carpooling. Make sure your passengers are aware that the price of tickets are NON-REFUNDABLE. We will leave the Clubhouse via carpooling.
