When Gulfood launched 25 years ago one could little imagine how it would grow to become one of the world’s most important food and hospitality events. Of course, some of the signs were always written in the sand. In a region where climate severely limits agricultural production, food imports were inevitably going to be essential and international producers were sure to find a good export market.
Yet the pace and scale of growth surprised even the most optimistic industry observers - especially in recent years. Whilst the global economy put the brakes firmly on elsewhere, Gulfood bucked the trend and powered ahead to deliver bigger, better business and new export opportunities unmatched by any other market.

Although trade was the grit around which the pearl of Dubai was formed, it was the ruling family’s vision that ensured the true potential of Dubai Creek’s natural harbour was realised. Noting the influx of merchants to the Arab coastal settlements, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum established Dubai as a free trade port, abolished import and export tariffs, and welcomed businesses to relocate with the guarantee of safe and peaceful trading that exists to this day.
For centuries now, traders have routed goods through Dubai to avoid the high customs elsewhere in the region and the city has enjoyed growth, prosperity and a diverse and open economy as a result.
Today, Dubai is more than just a safe harbour. It is the region’s import and re-export hub with a world-class logistics, trade and business infrastructure including the Middle East’s ‘Best Seaport’, ‘Best Container Terminal Operator’ and ‘Best Air Cargo Airport’.

Gulfood has provided a great opportunity to penetrate markets within the region and to meet with African markets that currently have no PepsiCo manufacturing. We were delighted also with the number of traders that attended the exhibition from the European markets - we did not expect this.
