Grant Award Summaries
GULF BREEZE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL – FRESH START, GREAT START
o Applicant: Amy Parker Grant Award: $2,491.58 o GBWD Funds will be used to purchase: Varsity and Junior Varsity Travel Suits
• As the new Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at Gulf Breeze High School, I am seeking assistance in outfitting them for the season. The girls’ basketball team does not enjoy the same broad support at their home games as the boys’ team. Support is so sparse that the girls rarely even cover the operating costs of the program. The number of girls trying-out for basketball has decreased steadily. My goal for this inaugural year is to unveil a new image and new excitement for the sport. With the “Fresh Start, Great Start” program, I seek to outfit the girls in travel suits and t-shirts that will make them proud to be a part of the team. A grant would allow me to lower the fees for athletes wishing to be a part of program and with a goal of encouraging more participation. The girls on the team will be volunteering in the community, attending youth basketball games, and representing the team at the middle and elementary schools. Uniform travel suits will allow us to convey a dignified image to the community and make a positive impression on young athletes.
THE KING RICHARD FOUNDATION – SEND A KID TO CAMP
o Applicant: Ann Richard Grant Award: $2,500.00 o GBWD funds will be used to purchase: 3 scholarships to summer camp for special needs children.
• The King Richard Foundation's purpose is to financially sponsor attendance of disadvantaged children affected by Autism and other Developmental disabilities (i.e. Down 's syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Mentally Challenged, etc.) at local summer camps, but will assist these children in general. The goal of the foundation is to help offset some of the cost with partial and full scholarships for these families in need of assistance with tuition. Grant will be used to fund KRF’s, "Send A Kid To Camp”, project- to help pay camp fees and tuition. The foundation estimates that scholarships will be requested by 3 potential candidates residing in the 32561/32563 area. Camp costs range from $600 to $2800, and in some cases we will provide assistance with gas for transportation to and from campsite and/ or lunch money for campers to eat while attending camp. Other functions of KRF include providing funding for other enrichment projects, i.e. discovery trips, community events, etc. educational programs for targeted individuals, and public awareness activities.
GULF BREEZE MIDDLE SCHOOL – LAPTOP COMPUTERS FOR INTENSIVE READING
o Applicant: Michael Brandon Grant Award: $7,470.99 o GBWD funds will be used to purchase: 10 laptop computers for Intensive Reading classes and a laptop cart.
• Gulf Breeze Middle School is excited about the potential opportunity to offer new reading software for its Intensive Reading students. These web-based reading programs would require students to access the software via computer. Currently, the Intensive Reading students do not have access to classroom computers. Gulf Breeze Middle School would like to extend the opportunity to increase students’ achievement in reading to the most vulnerable of our student population as it relates to reading achievement.
GULF BREEZE MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND – INSTRUMENTS FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
o Applicant: Susan Smithey Grant Award: $9,935.00 o GBWD funds will be used to purchase: one full size tuba, one intermediate oboe, one double French horn, one snare drum, and one piccolo.
• At Gulf Breeze Middle School, every student who wishes to learn to play an instrument and receive an education in music is allowed to join the band. Certain instruments are provided by the school, such as tubas, French horns, euphoniums, baritone saxophones, and other large instruments. In order to provide instruments for all our students, we use every instrument in our school inventory, which includes some very old dented horns. Some students are practicing on some instruments that are 40 to 50 years old. The band fund spends thousands of dollars every summer maintaining these instruments. We would like to purchase some new instruments for the Gulf Breeze Middle School Band to replace the old, worn out instruments that are in constant need of repair.
WOODLAWN BEACH MIDDDLE SCHOOL – INVESTIGATING THE IMPACTS OF THE INVASIVE LIONFISH
o Applicant: Amy Cozart Grant Award: $9,989.00 o GBWD funds will be used to purchase: lab equipment, reusable lab supplies and expendable supplies
• My 8th Grade Science class at Woodlawn Beach Middle School has been recommended by the Santa Rosa County School District to participate in a new Citizen Science project studying the impact of invasive lionfish on local fisheries and coastal ecology. This project is a partnership with the University of West Florida and the National Park Service and will provide students with hands-on experience using DNA-based methods to identify lionfish prey. By participating in this Citizen Science project, students will (1) gain a deeper understanding of standard biological and ecological concepts, (2) gain hands-on experience with the equipment and methods commonly used in research labs across the country, and (3) directly participate in research to better understand the impacts of this highly invasive species.
