VADODARA: Ramilaben Govindbhai Patel
hasn't been to college. But at 43, she earns what
some CEOs take home. Nothing fancy here. She
milks cows every day and supplies milk to a
dairy co-operative. She milked Rs 1.10 crore -
Rs 1,10,17,675 - net profit in 2011-12, to be
precise!
At Pentarpura village in Sabarkantha district,
Ramilaben's dairy farm churns out 5.55 lakh
litres of milk per annum. What had started as a
backyard business in 2000 is now a full-fledged
family business. She is an outstanding success
story of the change the White Revolution has brought about in Amul capital.
Twelve years ago, Ramilaben registered herself as a primary milk producer at Pentarpura's dudh
mandali (village level milk society) and took a bank loan for five cross-bred cows. Today, she
runs 'Jai Ranchod Dudh Utpadan Kendra', which is a five-acre home to 280 cattle where 40
workers get employment, even though the farm has four automatic milking machines.
She and her husband Govindbhai visited Israel last year to finalise plans to set up a calf-rearing
farm alongside a fully computerized 'tabela'.
"Our farm has 24-hour water, cooling system, fodder chaffing machines and other things but
we now want to adopt Israeli technology where rotary units will milk cows automatically and
also indicate the fat content," says Ramilaben. The modernization will cost Rs 1 crore.
Ramilaben is an inspiration to other women in Gujarat who are the backbone of the dairy
industry. Out of the total 16,117 milk societies, 2,124 are run by women. Of the 31.8 lakh
members in 15 district unions, 8.2 lakh are women.
"A quarter of our total members are women but their contribution to the productivity of the
dairy sector is much more," says R S Sodhi, managing director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk
Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets the brand Amul.

Interestingly, while we are trying to figure out which women milk producer earnshighest in Gujarat, we came across the number of inspiring stories. There is awoman by the name of Lilaben Patel, who like Ramilaben, also hails fromSabarkantha district. Lilaben has never been to school but she owns a farm thathas 160 cows and earns Rs 50 lakh per annum. Her husband - Punjiram - saysearlier they had to work 24 hours when they took care of farming business. Now,the couple retires at 10 am and switches on air-conditioner as animal husbandrybusiness is paying them much better than farming!
Prashant Rupera (Vadodara) replies to Sudhir Krishnan 1 day ago
Thank you Sudhir, we appreciate your feedback. Farmers in Gujarat have reallycome a long way. Ramilaben's family like other milk producers took up to animalhusbandry after realising that they cannot simply remain dependent on farmingbecause of uncertain monsoon. What started to make some extra earnings, hasnow turned into a full fledged business.
Prashant Rupera (Vadodara) replies to Prem Ahuja 1 day ago
Thank you Prem. You are right that there is a lot to learn from such individuals. They are examples of self-made entrepreneurs. In fact, Sabar Dairy'smanagement has informed us that there are more than 450 farmers who produce
more than 100 litres of milk per day and out of that 25 farmers in SabarkanthaDistrict have produced milk worth over Rs 25 lakh per year in last financial year.
Prashant Rupera (Vadodara) replies to SB 1 day ago
No dear, they are exempted from income tax.

Amul has brought work for many thousands and nutritive milk for million ofchildren's in India only because of one innovator . We lack innovation. Weshould instill in our children the SPIRIT OF INNOVATION instead of tellingthem become doctor, engineer, IT etc.

I am glad to know that people in Gujarat are taking advantage of the milkrevolution which is a brain child of Sri. Varghese Kurien who is also the GodFather of AMUL. But for some political and rigid mentality of North vs Southkind of people, he had to quit before fulfilling his whole vision.. Any way.. itsglad to know that his revolution principle is still working and benefits thecommon people of that state..

Author did not mention, How Ramilaben was able to manage to acquire 5acre land for her cattle farming business from the income of 5 cross breedcows ( failed project of Gujarat Agricultural University ). Can anyone elaboratethe statistics used by the author in this article. This is very profitablebusiness, I would like to invest in this dairy business in Gujarat. Myinvestment will definitely help in getting the jobs to pass-outs from the newlyestablished private dairy science colleges (not affiliated with agriculturaluniversities and most of them owned by MLAs and their relatives) and to runthese colleges.

The Panjab & Haryana States have been made to look towards theprogressive farmers of Gujarat State, though for a better cause, for thenecessary input to remodel & revise their existing systems. These states havethe needed men, machinery & the will to bring laurels even at a fasterpace. These two High Tech Agriculture based States can march ahead, handin hand, in increasing Milk Production, offering more & more jobs to theeducated jobless in a big way. Animal Husbandry Dept, seeking necessaryknow-how should approach the advanced countries like Israel,Canada,HollandAustralia,New Zealand etc for Milch improved cattle farms,Milk procurementsredesigned /restructured infrastructure & the latest Marketing know-how,bothin the country & abroad. Better managed organisations is the need of theday, in addition to the existing Cooperative Societies. The small farmers begiven at least five milch cattle to start with. The Rural Development Bankingsystem be made easily available & the cows/buffaloes be supplied by theGovt agencies at a reasonable subsidy. The Govt Agencies must visit thevillages & in consultation with the willing farmers ,immediate arrangements betaken care of. During the lean season, the dairies must be given couple ofmilch cattle or some other alternative to sustain so that the dairy systemremains alive . During the flush season, the increased inflow of milk be usedfor manufacturing its products & supplied to the ever needy mega/metro citiesthrough fast delivery system. More & more chilling centres & smallprocessing units be started district wise. Though the said infrastructure doesexist ,this has to expanded at a faster pace with well trained Dairy Personnel;both Degree/Diploma holders & short term dairy courses from recognisedinstitutes .The NRIs belonging to Panjab & Haryana can extend their helpinghand to their home States!

Kudos to Ramilaben for her untiring milking job thereby she earned aboveRs.1 crore net profit. But our politicians are 'milking' in a different way andthereby they too make huge profits in billions in a year. How the politiciansmilk? By taking bribe from poor citizens, by cheating poor citizens, by illegalmining as in the case of some Karnataka ministers, by forcibly takingagricultural lands from the poor farmers, by drying lakes and ponds andoffering the same to big real estate sharks, and the list goes on endlessly.

A very interesting fact. She is really an ideal woman. She must behonored. The fact shows why the Gujrat is Gujrat. There are lot of chances inour state as well, but chances may come only to hard working and honestmen and women. In my state this is not so as we lack that culture.

Have worked on a farm in Israel and have seen conditions for farmers in Indiaand in the USA, The Indian farmers work a lot harder than farmers in America& Israel. Yet their yield is a lot less and they earn a lot less. What they lackis help in getting the right seeds and ecofriendly technology (not justpesticides and more pesticides and genetically modified seeds) to make theirfarms more productive. Hope the people in the government do more toimprove the lives of the farmers, and are able to produce a lot more food thanthey are- while at the same time being kinder to their animals & theenvironment.

The farmers and NGOs run by women in Tamilnadu should emulate and adoptthe success story of this Gujarati woman ( about whom we are proud of). andignite White Revolution. State Govt, commercial banks, NABARD andFarmers' Associations should lend all assistance. This will help inrejuvenating the rural economy. This assumes more importance in thecontext of maverick monsoon in recent years.Besides the income from dairyfarming will be steady unlike agriculture which depends on the vagaries ofmonsoon. t
