A report on World Environment Day celebration @GTU-Gandhinagar Campus on 5th June, 2018 World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5
th of June every year, and is the United
Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our

World environment day was first established to be celebrated every year by running effective
campaigns by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) in the conference on Human Environment began from 5th
to 16th

at United Nations in 1972. First time celebrated in 1973 with particular theme “Only one
Earth”. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on
emerging environmental issues hosted in different cities of the world.
The government of India urged all state Governments and UTs to undertake actions in the
States/UTs for creating awareness on environment conversation and theme based awareness
to “Beat Plastic Pollution”. In this endeavour, the following suggested initiatives need to be
undertaken:
■ Undertaken awareness activities across all schools including – poster making, essay
writing, quiz competitions etc.
■ Plastic litter clean-up drives in cities and town.
■ Illumination of office premises and other buildings with green lights on 5th
June 2018.
■ Sensitization of general public through print and social media.
■ Making announcements towards curtailing use of plastic in all forms by Government
agencies.
GTU School of Engineering & Technology has also encouraged faculty
members and students to go ahead with their own innovative ideas as to how to beat plastic
pollution and initiate activities from today itself leading up to 5th
June 2018 at their level and
with local resources.
