SCOPE OF THE GUIDELINE

The scope of the guidelines for career development is to provide the necessary information for

students at the "Albanian University" to select their career at the easiest way possible. The

guideline offers practical ideas on how to select the proper career, how to prepare a CV and an

effective motivation letter, how to improve the way of introducing oneself before the employer /

institution in order to gain the job they want, etc.

The objectives of the guidelines are given to inform students about:

Creating the opportunity for the easiest possible career selection;

Setting priorities;

Preparation of CV;

Writing a motivation letter;

Preparation techniques for a job interview;

Networking and

Presentation skills;

Self-evaluation exercises.

1.1 What is career development?

There are many definitions about careers and career development drafted by various authors.

However, the most used and accepted definition defines career development as the progress and

actions taken by a certain person throughout his / her life in relation to a particular profession.

Career Development describes the ongoing process of a person who manages the life, learning

and work in the course of his lifetime. It includes the development of skills and knowledge that

enable individuals to plan and make well-informed decisions about their education, training and

career selection. It is important to note that the development of career applies to people of all

ages. As students and young professionals we should take into consideration the fact that career

selection is simultaneously both an opportunity and responsibility.

A career is a portfolio of projects that:

Teaches new skills to you;

Offers new experiences to you;

Develops new skills;

Expands the range of colleagues to you.

2. PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY FOR AN EASIER SELECTION OF CAREER

2.1 Planning your career:

2.1.1 STEP 1: REVEAL YOURSELF

Where do I want to be?

What are my strengths?

What are my weaknesses?

The best way to enter the career path that fits you is knowing yourself better. This will help you

evaluate your opportunities to take clear decisions and to identify the most valuable

opportunities.

2.1.2 STEP 2: EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Revealing professional or study opportunities, can be an interesting process and highly valuable.

Therefore, the more you seek the better it is for you. Identify and arrange opportunities based on

the fact how valuable they are to you and to what extent they will help you to focus on making

the right decisions.

2.1.3 STEP 3: MAKE A DECISION

Making a valid decision comes out as a result of an evaluation that should be made by comparing

opportunities and taking into account the personality, values, interests and expectations. The

ultimate goal of making a decision is to select opportunities that offer satisfaction and success to

you. Anticipate potential challenges and obstacles that may arise on the way, and adjust to them.

2.1.4 STEP 4: ACT

An action plan helps to define your goal, and to achieve the required steps while coping with the

challenges that you could face. This will be useful for planning and continuing your studies, to

search a job or to go ahead with your personal development. For each of your opportunities

specify the purpose, the necessary steps and potential challenges. Occasional review of your

action plan will help you to advance even further.

5. PREPARATION OF A MOTIVATION LETTER FOR EMPLOYMENT

The goal of motivation letters is to create the distinct impression and to acquire the reader’s interest, so that the award of invitation to interview shall be determined.

Primarily, the motivation letter serves to introduce your application and CV.

Page 11: GUIDELINE ON CAREER DEVELOPMENTalbanianuniversity.edu.al/wp-content/uploads/2017/... · ALBANIAN UNIVERSITY Universitas-Fabrefacta- Optime 1 GUIDELINE ON CAREER DEVELOPMENT Prepared

11

Please note that letters you are going to write not only will show your interest and qualifications,

but will also enable employers to note your attention paid to the details, pronunciation, grammar

and overall quality of your written communication.

Introductory paragraph:

What is your goal of writing this letter? What position you are applying for and where did you

hear about this position?

Second paragraph:

What are your qualifications? Why do you want to work for this organization? What would you

like to do for them? Describe yourself briefly. Incite employer’s curiosity so that he / she wants

to read your CV and set an interview.

Third paragraph

What is your action plan? Do you want to contact them by phone or do you want them to contact

you?

Other points that can be included in the final paragraph:

Express your readiness to provide additional information;

Set a specific time you can contact by telephone or e_mail;

Let him/her know if you will go to visit their company / institution.

Give thanks to the person who receives your letter for his/her time and interest.

Most importantly, be sure to address your motivation letter to a person. If you do not have a

name available, please call the department or human resources to find out whom your letter

should be addressed. As a last resort, address your letter to the personnel manager, hiring

manager or to the recruitment representative.

CVs are as valid as the motivation letters accompanying them. So make sure you spend

some time to write your letter and to address it to the right person.

What you write and how you write it, gives considerable information to the potential

employers regarding your professionalism, competences and your personality.

When searching a job in both business and professional circles, appropriate procedures

and rules of conduct are important in communication.
