Founded over 11 years ago, and with 34 acquisitions under its belt, Infor’s re-

launch goes much deeper than a cosmetic makeover.

To accompany the completely new, ‘bottoms-up, inside-out’ redesign of its core

technology architecture, Infor has invested in differentiation of its software suites,

website designs, and mobile apps through cutting-edge User Experience Design

(UXD). They assembled a top-notch in-house creative agency, Hook & Loop, which

developed a sophisticated and coherent design language used across all Infor

market-facing products, services, and communications.

Gone are the business applications that were designed to look like paper forms

from the 1980s. Gone are the Web pages that resemble huge tabbed index cards—

only with more drop-down menus and fields than any sane person would like to fill

out in a lifetime of customer service requests. Instead, business software vendor

Infor is presenting customers with an interface for all of its applications that

looks—and more importantly, behaves—like a modern consumer social network.

In a research note, Peter Goldmacher, an analyst with Cowen and Co., said the

company’s “massive investments” in its user interface have served to “materially

close the gap between enterprise and consumer software usability.” He added

that “Infor is coming to market with the right product at exactly the right time.”

The essence of Infor’s strategy is to tackle what is commonly referred to as the micro-

vertical market, as specific vertical industries like dairy or brewing, as opposed to

looking at the market through the lens of larger categories like food and beverage.

We tend to think of food and beverage as a market, whereas, according to Charles

Phillips, it’s a sector. The micro-verticals—dairy production, brewing, baking, and

meat processing–have radically different requirements in terms of how raw materials

are acquired and processed, and how finished goods are produced and taken to

market. Building software and going to market specifically for these micro-verticals

makes tremendous sense. Whereas, building software and going to market at the

sector level tends to produce one-size-fits-none software and the need for a lot of

customization and configuration.

Infor executives specifically sought out non-traditional types (ie, non-traditional

to the software world) to help them design a user interface that significantly

improved user productivity. It didn’t want just a prettier, artsy interface that did

the same things as the old interface. It wanted to eliminate screens, drive user

effectiveness, etc.

The result is that a single screen has analytic data on the far right. That information

is sensitive to the user and the role they have in the company. To the far left of the

screen are short synopses of transactions that the user probably should initiate or

complete. In the center of the screen is some macro-data … that is of value to this

specific user. Data for all of this is coming from several Infor, Infor partners, and

Infor data warehouse systems. users stay in this system and not log in/log out

of differing applications to get their work completed. The new user interface is a

key component of the Infor re-boot, and is not a simple facelift overlaid on top of

old code.
