Introduction An important but seldom talked about cornerstone of Chester County’s vibrant economy are the 30 or so publicly traded companies headquartered in the county. As this guide attests, Chester County-‐‑based publicly traded companies fit no specific profile but rather, run the gamut in the development stage, industry, number of employees and annual sales. Yet combined, Chester County-‐‑based publicly traded companies are an economic force to be reckoned with. Combined, the 30 companies based employ 145,000 people worldwide and generate a whopping $138 billion in annual sales. Who are these publicly traded companies and what do they do? Some, like Downingtown’s DNB Financial and Exton-‐‑based West Pharmaceutical, are household names. Others remain largely unknown. Take AmerisourceBergen (NYSE: ABC) described on page 7 of the Guide. The Chesterbrook-‐‑based company, founded in 2001, is one of the top three drug wholesalers in North America. The company’s 26 distribution centers provide an essential link between pharmaceutical companies making drugs and the pharmacies, hospitals, doctors, mail order and other health providers that dispense those drugs. With annual sales of $119 billion, AmerisourceBergen is Chester County’s only FORTUNE 500 company and Pennsylvania’s largest corporation as well. At the other end of the spectrum in annual sales, employees and the pharmaceutical food chain is tiny Malvern-‐‑based Recro Pharma (NASDAQ: REPH) found on page 25. Employing just 20 people, Recro Pharma develops and markets non-‐‑opioid therapeutics for the treatment of severe pain. Founded in 2007, Recro recently acquired Alkermes, a Georgia-‐‑based competitor, adding a new line of pain-‐‑killers to the company’s drug development pipeline as well as much needed manufacturing capacity and expertise. In between giant AmerisourceBergen and fledgling Recro are a host of other publicly traded companies, all Chester County based and all, for the most, doing well having survived the economic turmoil of the last seven years.
