‘Isn’t the role of the arts to develop creative individuals? Well, Arts Award does this in a way that classroom teaching alone can’t. The journey is an independent and personal one and that’s where Arts Award enables children and young people to shine.’

Arts Award supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. We want to inspire children and young people aged 7–25 to enjoy the arts. We offer the chance to develop creative and leadership skills, and get recognised through our national qualifications.

Doing an Arts Award develops your arts knowledge, your creative and communication skills, and your ability to lead projects. An Arts Award is useful when looking for further education and job opportunities — in the arts or other fields.

This Guide includes information for children, young people and parents as well as professionals interested in running Arts Award.

If you’re doing your Arts Award turn to page 5 to find out about what’s involved and choose the level that’s right for you.

If you’re working with young people, turn to our Arts Award facts section on page 14 for all the information you need to get started.

welcome to Arts Award!

Our celebrity champions explain why they support the award

stars speak out

Looking back to when we started out on a market stall, I’d never

considered being a designer. Arts Award is great because it inspires

people to use their creativity, and follow artistic options that they

might never have considered.

Wayne Hemmingway, designer

It gives me great honour to be in the shoes of the people who once

believed in me, and I hope this in turn will provide a place for you to

continue believing in yourself and your art.

Akram Khan, choreographer and dancer

Without the encouragement of others I wouldn’t be doing music or

acting. Arts Award is a crucial programme to support and develop

talent, and widen young people’s horizons and raise their ambitions.

Riz Ahmed, musician and actor

I’m proud to back Arts Award because I believe that it will help not

only each young artist but the community around them, and add to the

pool of talent we have in our country. Everyone who takes part should

gain the courage to aim high and make the very best of their talents.

‘Getting involved in Arts Award has opened up so many avenues for me. Making friends and meeting new people who’ve shared their expertise has given me the tools to be more independent. I got a lot more than I imagined.’ Bhavesh

Bhavesh achieved his Bronze Arts Award with Peshkar Productions, focusing on photography and theatre. He took photos of his local area around the themes of ‘beautiful’ and ‘ugly’ and shared his skills with his next-door neighbour who was new to photography techniques. The arts event Bhavesh chose to review was a performance of Deathtrap at his local theatre and he also explored the career of Danny Boyle.

‘Arts Award has allowed me to take ownership of my work and has taken me on a personal journey leading to a huge amount of opportunities. I learnt how to direct, I learnt about lighting, set design, acting and so much more. What I once considered out of reach seems more attainable... it is like having a gold star on my CV!’ Ellie

Ellie achieved her Silver Arts Award at York Theatre Royal. As part of her arts challenge she assisted the directors of the adaptation of The Railway Children which was running at the theatre. For her arts leadership project, Ellie helped to direct a youth theatre production. She ran warm-up games for every session and designed a vocal workshop around dialogue and projection. Ellie has gone on to achieve her Gold Arts Award.

Gold Arts Award is our highest recognition of your abilities as a young artist and creative arts leader. Working at this level will extend your creativity, communication, planning and leadership skills, and you’ll gain a Level 3 national qualification.

The award will usually take around 90 hours to complete. You need to build a portfolio which shows your arts achievement and reflects your development as an artist and arts leader.

There are two units:

personal arts developmentarts practice gain experience of a new area of the arts and develop new art work by collaborating with another artist

the wider arts sector get involved in the arts world through placements, volunteering, training and research

‘I have learnt about how art can be used in future life, and how you need to have more than a talent to do well — you need business skills as well. I expect that I will refer back to my Gold Arts Award because of the transferable skills it develops, such as time management, organisation, planning, people skills and communication.’ Phoebe

As part of her Gold Arts Award, Phoebe planned and delivered an interactive visual art installation, explored digital imaging using Photoshop and took on the role of secretary at a youth music group. She also explored careers in arts restoration and took up a placement at a top London firm.

Arts Award facts what?w Arts Award offers a framework for

arts activities and projects, as well as providing motivation and recognition for young people’s achievements

w Arts Award has five levels, four of which (Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold) are accredited qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Discover is an introductory level

w Arts Award assesses how young people develop in their chosen arts activities rather than achievement of a specific art form skill level

w Young people can gain awards through work in any art form. This includes creative, technical and support roles

who?w Young people aged 7–25 can take part.

Bronze, Silver and Gold are only open to the 11+ age range

w A trained professional called an Arts Award adviser supports children and young people and then assesses their progress — usually an arts or youth worker, or a teacher

w A trained Arts Award moderator checks the adviser’s assessment for the accredited levels

where?w Young people work towards their

Arts Award at an Arts Award centre

w Any organisation that supports young people’s arts activities can register as a centre if it employs or links with an Arts Award adviser

w An Arts Award centre might be an art gallery, theatre, school, college, youth club or arts project

w Individuals may also register as Arts Award centres, providing they have trained as advisers

how?w Young people gather evidence of their

creative and skills development which they present as an arts log or portfolio in any format

w Young people can work towards Arts Awards within, outside and beyond school or college

w Arts Award advisers facilitate arts experiences, support progress and assess arts logs and portfolios

adviser training and support To become an Arts Award adviser, individuals must successfully complete a training course. These are run across the country and can be booked through the Arts Award website.

We offer a range of post-training support to advisers through the website, national helpdesk, newsletters and regional events.

moderation and certificatesFollowing external moderation, certificates for those who pass the accredited levels are sent to the centre within six weeks. There is a range of moderation options, which can be booked through the Arts Award website. Discover certificates are issued on submission of the adviser’s assessment and young people’s details to Trinity.

models of deliveryThere is a wide range of approaches to delivering Arts Award and many are illustrated through case studies www.artsaward.org.uk/inmysetting

■ weekly clubs or groups ■ short courses and holiday projects■ partnership projects■ whole year-group and class projects■ extra-curricular programmes and

Advisers choose the approach that suits their setting, considering existing commitments, the support young people may need and the nature of the activities. The ratio of adviser to young people will vary according to these circumstances — as a rough guide we suggest 1:25. We recommend that centres integrate the Arts Award framework within existing activities and use it to structure project planning.
