Dear Eastside Family, this is my 3rd attempt
at writing this note. It’s so hard to put into
words how much you all mean to us and how
much we love you and appreciate your prayers, calls,
visits, cards, meals, mowing...I could go on and on. We
love you!!! Randy, Terri, Nick and Katie.

Words are not really enough to express my
appreciation for my family at Eastside. You
all are such a compassionate and loving
group of people. Your prayers and monetary gift were so
needed and appreciated. I can't thank you all enough.
Please continue to pray for my family. Again, thank you so
much for your support you have always given me!! I really
do appreciate all of you. Love, Tina Edwards and family.

Sunday School
The Sunday School teacher was describing that when
Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom she turned into a pillar
of salt, when Bobby interrupted. “My mommy looked
back once while she was driving,” he annouced, “and she
turned into a telephone pole.”
Another Sunday School teacher said to her children, “We
have been learning about how powerful the kings and
queens were in Biblical times. But there is a higher power.
Who can tell me what it is?” Tommy blurted out, “I know,
Aces.”
After explaining the commandment to honor your father
and mother, a Sunday School teacher asked her class if
there was a commandment that teaches us how to treat our
brothers and sisters. One boy, the oldest in his family,
immediately answered, “Thou shalt not kill.”
Lot again...A father was reading Bible stories to his young
son. He read, “The man named Lot was warned to take his
wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and
was turned into a pillar of salt.” His son asked, “What
happened to the flea?”

From Matt . . . What was the Church like in the years immediately following the completion of the New
Testament? Was it like our church? How did they interpret the Bible? Were the issues they faced, both internally
and externally, similar to ours? How far have we gone away or how closely have we followed the trajectory set by
those early generations of Christians? How did we get from there to here? The answer to these questions lies both in
the actual writings of those Christians in the era following the New Testament and in the recorded history of the
Church down through the ages. History is tremendously valuable because it shapes who we are, what we think, how
we think, and why. Last month, I shared books on the history of the churches of Christ in North America. This month,
allow me to share helpful, accessible books on the history of the development and growth of the Church as whole:
The Story of Christianity, vols. 1 & 2 – Justo Gonzalez (my seminary textbooks – long but easy reading)
Retro Christianity – Michael J. Svigel (beginner)
Church History in Plain Language – Bruce L. Shelley (beginner)
Church History, vols. 1 & 2 – Everett Ferguson (church of Christ scholar) and Woodridge & James
Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity – Mark Noll (intermediate)
