Guest Editor’s Introduction: The Oregon Workshop on Software Metrics

Warren Harrison Department of Computer Science, Portland State University, Portland, Oregon

After a hiatus of several years, software metrics has emerged as one of the promising new developments in the software industry. The goal of the Second Annual Annual Oregon Workshop on Software Metrics was to provide an international forum entirely devoted to the dissemination of state-of-the-art research and practice related to software metrics. The Workshop, which was held at the Portland State University campus in Portland, Oregon, on March 19-20, 1990, hosted 108 participants from Canada, England, Germany, and the United States. Just under a quarter of the participants were from uni- versities, with the rest coming from a variety of govern- mental and industrial organizations.

It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve the software metrics community as Coordinator of the Ore- gon Workshop for the past 2 years. The work of many people have made the Workshop successful. In particu- lar, I’d like to thank Leonard Shapiro, Nancy Diamond, and Chik Erzurumlu of Portland State University and Roger Olsen of the Oregon Center for Advanced Tech- nology Education for their assistance in sponsoring and

organizing the Workshop. The keynote speaker, Steve Wilkinson from Ashton-Tate, the tutorial speaker, Horst Zuse from the Technical University of Berlin, and Bruce Anderson from the University of Essex, who organized a popular mini-workshop on metrics for object-oriented systems, also deserve a heartfelt thank you.

In addition, I would also like to thank the Committee: Al Baker, Iowa State University; Bob Birss, Sun Mi- crosystems, Inc.; Curt Cook, Oregon State University; Teresa Harrison, SET Laboratories, Inc.; Ken Magel, North Dakota State University; Dave Patterson, Men- tor Graphics Corporation; Mike Purdue, Sun Microsys- tems, Inc.; Harry Porter, Portland State University; Lise Poulsen, Amdahl Corporation; and Steve Shellans, Tek- tronix, Inc.

This special issue of the Journal of Systems and Software is a collection of the articles that were pre- sented at the 1990 Oregon Workshop on Software Met- rics. I hope the readers will find them as enjoyable and thought provoking as those of us who attended the Work- shop. It is my belief that these papers represent the cur- rent state-of-art in software metrics research and appli- cation.

We hope that the Third Annual Oregon Workshop on Software Metrics will be even better next year. I hope to see all of you there. Thank you.
