GUAM PACIFIC CHORAL FESTIVAL
I would like to offer my warmest ”Hafa Adai” and
welcome to all the participants of the 1st Guam Pacic
Choral Festival! My choir from the University of Guam
(the University Singers) has participated in two previous
Festa Musicale events…2010 in Olomouc, Czech Repub-
lic, and 2011 in Pattaya, Thailand. I feel that it is a great
compliment that Festa Musicale was intrigued enough
with Guam that it wanted to put together an international
festival on this far away island.
As most of the participants already know, Guam is
a mere 210 Sq. Miles (about 540 sq. km.). It has been
a territory of the USA since the late 19th century. Themain industry is tourism and also has a considerable US
military presence. The population is approximately 165,000 with half being Chamorro (the
indigenous people) and about 40% with Philippine ancestry. The remaining 10% come from
dozens of other countries and ethnicities.
Guam is 13 degrees North latitude (about the same as Manila) and, thus, has a tropical cli-
mate. Casual dress is appropriate nearly everywhere and barbecuing and being at the beach
with friends and family is a regular part of Guam life. I hope you have time to meet some of
the local population and you will nd them nearly as warm as the climate.
The University of Guam is a liberal arts university with over 4,000 students representing
26 different countries although the majority of the students are from the island of Guam.
Music is important in the culture of Guam although not so much the academic study of music
as much as singing and playing guitar and ukulele. Island songs can be heard everywhere.
I hope you have a wonderful experience with the 1st Guam Pacic Choral Festival and
with your stay on Guam. For most people who choose to make Guam their home, this is
a little piece of tropical paradise. Most outdoor activities revolved around the ocean…in it,on it, or by it on the beach…I hope you have time to explore this recreational opportunity.
Sincerely,
Dr. Randall Johnson
Professor of Music, University of Guam
Chairman of the Jury
