**NEW FOR 2013: For continuous safety, we are asking for parents to

volunteer to “chaperone” during the band camp hours. We need a parent to be available to sit with a child inside if necessary, or to assist if a heat-

**IMPORTANT HEAT ACCLIMATION PROCEDURES AND PRECAUTIONS**

We ask for your support and assistance in our efforts to keep all students safe during the week of band camp. Per FCPS, we take precautions to be prepared for unexpected emergencies, but prevention begins at home, well before camp begins.

First, please understand that marching band and colorguard are extremely physically demanding activities. PLEASE encourage your student to be working out on a regular basis. Running, jogging, swimming, weightlifting, spinning regularly (guard), hiking, biking, yoga, etc. are all STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. We can challenge our students with visual design if they are fit and healthy. Your student will find enjoyment in the activity if they are successful! Help us plan for success.

Secondly, during camp (and before) the importance of eating breakfast is extremely important. Students MUST eat before arriving at camp in the morning. A breakfast with carbohydrates will provide energy for the morning hours. Heavy, greasy, foods can cause illness. Ask Ms. Sandifer if you need healthy suggestions. For lunch this year and in the future: NO pizza, NO fast food, NO soda. Subway is acceptable.

HYDRATE! HYDRATE! HYDRATE! We make sure to provide many opportunities throughout the day for students to drink water. Please encourage your student to drink water before camp and after getting home at night. Do not go to sleep dehydrated. An occasional sports drink is okay, but should be accompanied with water. NO SODA DURING CAMP.

TJHS Band will provide the following preparations: training to recognize symptoms of heat-related illness, continuous water and ice source, shaded and/or indoor area for rest, appropriate breaks for rest and hydration. Emergency treatment can include rapid submission in ice tub, water consumption, and transportation to hospital via ambulance.

2013TJ Band Camp Dinners

Dear Band Parents,The summer two week band camp is coming quickly, and as Ms. Sandifer makes her final arrangements for a successful camp so should you. One option that we would like to offer you is a hot meal for your child on the Monday – Thursday nights of band camp.

As you know our students will only have about a 1 1/2 hour window between their day and night practice. To make this an easier time for you, Bob Fowle has volunteered to provide an optional meal for your student each night. The menu is attached. Each meal is $5. The dinner will be served around 4:00pm. There is no obligation; you can choose 1

meal, 8 meals or none. We ask that you send in the attached form, signed and checked with the nights you want your child served; along with money to cover the total cost of the selected meals. For example, if you were only going to eat 4 of the meals, you would send in $20.This is in no way mandatory, simply an option.

Payments must be made in cash or check (made out to TJ Band Boosters) by Monday, July 15, 2013. This cannot be taken out of your child’s account. If you have any questions or can help with food purchasing and serving, please call Bob Fowle at 301-694-6866 or email at [email protected].
