Run Like a Diva!
My name is Jill Formato and I am 40 years old. Ilive here in Myrtle Beach with my husband andthree sons. When I first moved to Myrtle Beach Ididn't know anybody. I have always struggled withmy weight since having kids and thought maybe ifI joined an exercise group I could get in shape

and meet people at the same time. I started working at a local hospitaland was asked by Debbie King if I was interested in joining a trainingwalk/run group. At first I wasn't sure, but I said why not, this is myopportunity to do what I want to do. Little did I know within six weeks Iwould run my first 5K. A year later I would run my first ½ marathon. Inever thought I would accomplish something like that at 40 years old.
I was given this opportunity by TinaHursh, who was unable to run due to aninjury. At first I thought it was for another5K, but soon found out it was for the ½marathon. I had done some training butwasn't sure how I would do during the
actual race, so I took the two weeks that Ihad until race day and trained. Almostevery day, Debbie King helped me to
physically and mentally get myself ready. Istarted reading different articles aboutpeople who trained for this and what toeat. I knew I had to detox and mentallycommit. I studied the course map everyday and would just remind myself, up 20 blocks and back down for13.1 miles. I didn't set a time for myself, I just wanted to finish. It tookme 3:15 but, I finished. They say you want to continue to do more
once you run one and, they are right, I'm ready to really train and runthe Myrtle Beach mini marathon this October and do much better.
Why Battle at the Border?

The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer and the streetsare getting fuller. And you know what that means, yes, another
Boarder Battle against our northern rivals in Wilmington. We won ourfirst match showing the group spirit as taught by our fearless leader,Roscoe Griffin. But last year Wilmington came back with a vengeance, changing their club rules to make participation a near necessity, while
we were perhaps too complacent.
This year we need everyone to come out for the most fun race of theyear and show what a great club we are a part of with the Grand
Strand Running Club. We aren't looking for the fastest of the fast ...we're looking for the club to come together as a group. Every runner,
regardless of speed, counts as a member of the Grand StrandRunning Club. Your paces don't count. We need strength in numbers
and unity is the key to our success. Join for a fun run and anopportunity to bond with all members in the club.
The focus of this race is not a competition. The Border Battle wascreated to bring the GSRC together as a united front, displaying ouruniformity and strength as a group of individuals with a common
interest. Our number one goal is to gather our members together toillustrate the club's overall interest in running and friendship.
So mark your calendar, cancel your vacation plans and get out yourwar paint or tutu, whatever showing spirit might be for you! Join us fora fun run, good conversation and refreshing popsicles! This is our
opportunity to get to know each and every member, regardless of yourlocation in the Grand Strand. But most importantly, show up, because
we all want you there. Win or lose, we do this together!
