Message from the Editor! As I sit in The Courtside Cafe, I look round to see Alijaz Bendene, who has achieved an ATP World Ranking of 81, and I realise how lucky we all are to belong to the community that is Gosling Sports Park!

June was a successful month for our Tennis academy, topped off by a well put together BBQ by the Team.

Make the most of this issue as it is packed full of useful information about the park, what’s going on, and how you can better yourself whatever sport you are into!

Be sure to check out Personal Trainer Danny Sanderson’s article about Body Awareness, and if interested drop him a line!

Recent successes include the entrants into Wimbledon for our Tennis guys, and also a good, strong performance from our resident Golfer Tom Lewis.

with Wimbledon Entries for GoslingGosling Tennis Academy enjoyed a send off in June.Players from the age of 2 years to 80 years came along to hit a ball with fellow Gosling players whom they will see on the TV at Wimbledon this year.

The evening BBQ meant that potential future Wimbledon hopefuls had the chance to grab an autograph from British Number 4 Dan Cox, who has qualified for the Wimbledon Main Draw.

Alongside Dan, fellow Gosling Professionals Alijaz Bendene, Dave Rice and Ed Corrie all recieved entries into the Wimbledon Main Draw or Qualifying rounds.

Speaking at the pre- Wimbledon BBQ, Dancommented “ Obviously I’m really excited this year. I played in the main draw back in 2011 and then had a tough 2012 when I had wrist surgery. I’m really looking forward to getting back to the All-England Club and playing in front of a home crowd, showing them what I can do and hopefully go far in the tournament. I am just going to go out there and try and win every match I play.”

Body Awareness, Danny Sanderson

GSport | Your inside guide to Gosling Sports Park10

with Danny Sanderson

Do you ever feel as though you are working really hard in the gym but not getting the results you desire? Perhaps injuries keep spoiling your progress? Or maybe your exercise is just feeling like a chore?

If you are pushing yourself through these issues, or just working harder and expecting things to improve then you are likely to be disappointed. Turning your music up and just going through the motions isn’t going to help either. A much better way is to look at improvingawareness of your body while youexercise.

So what is body awareness?

“The recognition of different parts of one’s own body, their relative position during movement, and their relationship to the environment. Body awareness is dependent on sensory information from the muscles and joints and is essential for smooth, coordinated movement.”

There are many worthy reasons for going to the gym – some want to lose weight, others want to build muscle. Jumping higher or running faster could be what motivates you and hard work isnecessary in order to achieve these goals. But becoming more aware of your body and improving efficiency inmovement can make this hard work go a lot further. If you are tensing muscles that should be relaxed then it is the equivalent of driving with the hand brake on!

Five steps to increase your body awareness when exercising – these steps are best tried during your warm up at first, giving you a better body connection before beginning the more intense part of your workout:

1.Become aware of your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and allow your stomach to gently expand, then breathe out through your mouth and let your stomach gently sink back to the starting position

2. Relax your facial muscles – we store a surprising amount of tension in our faces. It is unnecessary tension that can often lead to headaches and generally feeling stressed.

3. Let your arms hang and shoulders release – we often carry our shoulders higher than they need to be (up by our ears!). Another cause of headaches.

4. Become aware of your feet in contact with the ground – if you want to run fast, push a lot of weight or become more balanced then having stable footing is essential.

Page 11: GSport July 2014

Body Awareness, Danny Sanderson

GSport | Your inside guide to Gosling Sports Park 11

About the authorDanny is a strength and conditioning coach, sports massage therapist and a keen student of movement science. He has experience of a number of body awareness systems including Tai Chi, The Alexander Technique and The Feldenkrais Method. He uses these different methods to inform his practice with a varied client base including golfers, runners, office workers and people recovering fromneurological injuries.

5. Feel as though your head is being pulled up by a piece of string – your head is heavy and if it is not aligned with your spine then it can be detrimental to effi-cient movement.

These may seem like very simple orobvious thoughts to have during exercise, but by really working on these ideas you can discover an easier, more efficient way of exercising that will make it more enjoyable and sustainable.

PicturedIf you feel like you could benefit from greater body awareness during

your training then contact Danny at:[email protected] or 07765866084

comes to Welwyn Hatfield

The hugely successful Carers’ Passport card which gives unpaid family carers discounts in shops, restaurants and local services is coming soon to Welwyn Hatfield.

Carers who live, work or care in the Wel-wyn Hatfield district will be able to access savings when they sign up for the photo ID card run by the county’s leading charity for carers, Carers in Hertfordshire.

Among the discounts available are 20 per cent off at American diner Frankie & Benny’s and Mexican restaurant Chiqui-to, which both have branches at Hatfield Galleria; 10 per cent off Haven and But-lin’s Holidays, and up to 50 per cent off Warner Hotels.

There are currently 191 discounts/con-cessions in the Carers’ Passport Offers Booklet with lots more deals added all the time; for the full list or to apply for your card online visit www.carersinherts.org.uk/carerspassport. Watch out too for details of the launch when carers will be able to sign up for the latest super savings which will go live on the day.

Welwyn Hatfield is the latest area to benefit from the popular service; to date more than 2,000 passports have been issued with 800, equivalent to over 40 per cent of that number, going to carers not previously accessing support and advice from Carers in Hertfordshire.

The success of this service has meant the charity has been able to reach out and support carers at an earlier stage in their caring role and has enabled companies to give something back to the community.

Stevenage carer Diane Day said: “It’s great to be raising awareness of carers and to have so many businesses on board. Before the Passport there wasn’t much out there for us, but this card will give carers a new lease of life.”

Development and Fundraising Manager Linda Cudmore said: “It is absolutely fabulous that we now have over 200 busi-nesses on board. They are all providing discounts or concessions to the thou-sands of hidden carers across the county. This is not only great public recognition of carers but, more importantly, very valuable financial support. Carers tell us they feel valued and recognised which is at the core of all our work at Carers in Hertfordshire.”

Carers in Herts comes to Welwyn Hatfield

Taking The Reigns

GSport | Your inside guide to Gosling Sports Park22

Steve Gardner has taken the reigns as Gosling Tennis Club’s new chairman. Steve has high hopes for the Tennis Club, and aims to make it the best in the country. Here we catch up with him.Taking over as Chairman from Darren was a pretty scary thing to do. After all, Darren held the club together through thick and thin for years and was always going to be a hard act to follow. I’d like to thank him, as well as Sima and all of you who do a brilliant job in captaining teams, writingquizzes, helping run Wimbledon draws and even just coming down, playing tennis and making Gosling a brilliant club.

Gosling has been like a family tome - I love the place and the people. This is why I volunteered to become the chairman and hopefully make the place as brilliant as it can be.

We might have the biggest indoor tennis centre in the country; we might have amazing facilities and be home

to some of the best players in the country, but we’re just a normal tennis club at the heart of it all, and that’s what makes Gosling Tennis Club so special.

Making this club the very best it can be is about lots of things. To me the most important thing iscommunication, making sure we all know what’s on offer. The club and the centre will work together to make sure we are listening to members.

We intend to make sure that the members all know each other, from the pros to the academy players to all you wonderful people who’ve made the Thursday social nights such a success.

Make sure you pick up a copy of the new Tennis Club Handbook, available from Reception now.
