GSM Services
The primary objective of a mobile
telephony system is to allow mobilesubscribers to communicate effectively.

SERVICE CATEGO
RIES
main type of telecommunication services:
Basic services:available to all subscribers to a mobile network.e.g. voice telephone calls.
Supplementary services:Additional services that are available by subscription
only.
e.g. Call forwarding.

Basic Telecocommunication Services
Teleservices
Teleservice allows the subscriber to communicate
(usually via voice, fax, data orSMS) with another
subscriber.
It is a complete system including necessary terminalequipment.

Basic Telecommunication Services
Bearer services
It transports speech and data as digital information
within the network between user interfaces.
e.g.- a bearer service associated with the speech
telephony teleservice is the timeslot assigned to a
call on a TDMA frame over the air interface.

Basic Telecommunication Services
BEARER SERVICES
GSM systems offer a wide range of bearer services.
The DTI supports data services offered by the system.
Rates up to 48 kbits/s are possible.

BEARER SERVICES
Traffic to PSTN:For data traffic external to PLMN such as internetworking
with ISDN or directly to PSTN, the system selects asuitable modem in the DTI.
Traffic to ISDN:An entire set of data communication services with ISDN
terminals is available. No modem is necessary.

Traffic to Packet Switched Public Data
Network (PSPDN):
Packet service supports synchronous data transfers with the
PSPDN with rates from 1.2 to 48 kbits/s.
With synchronous data transfers a packet mode terminal canbe directly connected to the MS.
Synchronous data communication between an MS and a
packet switched network is possible via the Packet
Assem
bler-Disassem
bler(PAD) facility.Rates between 300 and 9600 bits/s are supported.

Traffic to Circuit Switched Public Data
Networks (CSPDN):Data communications with a CSPDN is possible via thePSTN or ISDN, depending on the CSPDN-transit networkinterface.
Traffic to Internet:Traditionally, an MSC accessed Internet nodes via existingnetworks such as the PSTN.
However, the direct access function enables an MSC tocommunicate directly with Internet nodes, thus reducing callset-up time.
-

ISDN Primary Rate Access (PRA):This function enables an MSC to provide PRA services to subscribers.
Network operator can offer PABX connection services through the
PLMN.
PRA provides a data rate ofup to 2 Mbits/s.

Short Message Services (SMS)
The service allows simple text message consisting of a
maximum of160 alphanumeric characters to be sent to or
from an MS.
If the MS is switched off, or has left the coverage area, the
message is stores in a Short Message Service Center
(SMS-C).
When the mobile is switched on again or has re-entered thenetwork coverage area, the subscriber is informed that
there is a message.

Barring of outgoing calls
The subscriber can activate or deactivate this service from
the MS with a variety of options for barring outgoing calls.

SUPPLEMENTARY SERVICES
Account Codes
This service enables a subscriber, e.g. a business, toidentify an account number, which is to be charged for
particular call components.
Account codes can be identified on a per cell basis.

Call waiting This service notifies the mobile subscriber, usually by
an audible tone, for incoming call.
The incoming call can be any type of basic service
including speech, data or fax.
There is no notification in the case of an emergency call
orSMS.

SUPPLEMENTARY SERVICES
Call hold
This supplementary service enables the subscribers to put
the basic normal telephony service on hold in order to set
up a new call or accept a waiting call.
-

Multiparty service
The multiparty service enables a mobile subscriber to
establish a multiparty conversation, that is, a simultaneous
conversation between up to six subscribers.
This service can only be used with basic speech telephony.

Calling line identification services:
These cover both the presentation and restriction
of the calling line identity. The presentation part of the service supplies the
called party with the ISDN orMSISDN number of
the calling party. The restriction service enables
calling parties to restrict the presentation of theirnumber on the MSs of called parties

Connected line identification
presentation/restriction:
supply the calling party with theMSISDN number of the
connected (called)party.
The restriction enables the connected party to restrict the
presentation.

Closed User Group (CUG)
The CUG service enables subscriber connected to the
PLMN/ISDN and possibly other networks, to form groupsin which access is restricted.
Example: members of a specific CUG can communicate
with each other, but generally not with users outside the
group.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES
Innovative features offer a level beyond the basic network standards.
Single personal numberThe single personal number service allows a subscriber to
arrange call forwarding to other networks when the mobile
is not reached in the subscribers primary network.
One directory number can reach the subscriber even though
the subscribermay have subscriptions in several differentnetworks.

EATURES
Dual numberingThe features allows the subscriber to have two different
directory numbers connected to the same subscription andthe same mobile equipment.
In this way different accounts can be connected to the
different directory numbers.
e.g. the subscribermay want one business account and oneprivate account connected to the same subscription.
-

Immediate call itemization:Hot billing
It is used when it is necessary to have immediate callcharging data output.
(e.g. to bill a third party foruse of a telephone, which is
rented).

Regional and local subscription
These features allow subscribers to subscribe to a servicein a specified geographical area.
Requests for service outside the area are rejected with the
exception of emergency calls and SMS.
For local subscriptions, the geographical area consists of anumber of cells, and for regional subscription, the area
consists ofLAs.

GEOGRAPHICALLY DIFFERENCIATED
CHARGING
This feature enables the GSMPLMN area to be dividedinto different tariff region.
The tariff regions is defined as a set of cells.
A subscribermay be offered cheaper calls within certain
areas.
