Green Ship of the Future is a Joint industry pr oj ect forinnovation and demonstration of technologies and methodsthat makes shipping more environmental friendly.

With respect to airborne emission the aim of the project isto provide the necessary technologies and operational

means to reduce emissions as follows:- 30 % reduction of CO 2 emissions- 90 % reduction of NO x emissions- 90 % reduction of SO x emissions

The focus was initially towards new buildings, but the focushas been increased on retrofitting on existing ships.

The JI P is an open invit ation f or all t o part icipat e inm aking shipping greener.

To meet the reduction targets, the following four main areasare considered:

Machinery WHR, scrubbers, EGR, et c.

Propu lsion Propeller s, rudders, t rim

    opti mi zation, et c.

Operat ions Rout e planning, perform ancemonit oring, etc.

Log ist i cs Bet t er in teract ion betw een t ranspor tform s, development/ modification ofexisting ship t ypes etc.

At present there are 22 project in progress.

    Low emission concept ships

The challenge was to takean exist ing moderndesign and evaluate thetechnologies suitable andto generate a picture of theimproved performance of

    the vessel.

We have evaluated twodifferent vessel types.

We have not changed thehull form, the DWT orother main parameters inorder to make cleancomparisons.

The w ay ahead in 2011

Green ship of the Future have launched a new project on the FutureECA operat ions when the new SOX regulations comes into place in2016 (max 0,1 % SOX). The study will focus on the retrofit of anexisting MR tanker. The project will include a techno economicalcomparisons of LNG as propulsion, Conventional propulsion with HFOfitted with a Scrubber, and Low Sulfur fuel propulsion system.

Green ship of the future will launch a new low emission project thistime a Low Emission Ferry where there will be new areas such as

AC, windows and insulations to investigate and naturally we also willlook at propulsion, machinery etc.

    The Maj or Chal lenges

We have Rules & Regulation in place for SOX and NOX and there areseveral technical solutions to solve the problems. This will have a hugeimpact on the environment as they come in to full force.

With regards to CO2 we are still awaiting the EEDI which hopefullywill come into place in soon through MARPOL Annex 6 in order toestablish a level play ground for new buildings.

Today contracts are signed on vessel of yesterdays design wherethere have not been done any effort to reduce emissions hopefullythis will changes soon in greater numbers - We have see an increasedeffort from the major operators to study and invest in greentechnologies but we need all owners to follow in their path.

GSF see our role a being a prom ot er of t he possibilit ies and topresent them in projects which are highly realistic and feasible.

Opt im izat ion of vessels The big steps are done when we arelifting the constraints such as conservatism, port limitations, safety, etc.
