GRW has developed an own original concept in fuel tank engineering. It is set to become the flagship brand of the industry’s most recognised fuel tanker model, from Southern Africa’s biggest tanker manufacturer.

Named the Imvubu - the first branded tanker on the market - the fuel tanker will allow transporters to alternate between SPD, metered delivery, and bridging vehicles. The Imvubu brings unprecedented flexibility and interchangeability to tanker fleets.

A viable multipurpose vessel has been created through the manifold pipe system, which enables the installation and removal of components in a comparatively uncomplicated process. A significant saving in cost; an increase in tanker availability; together with substantially reduced cost of ownership, taking into account the residual value, are among the may benefits.

GRW has reduced the number, and thereby the production costs, of operational components; standardised compartment sizes; and streamlined loading and off-loading. In addition, the tanker’s lower centre of gravity contributes to safety on the road. An impressive increase in payload crowns the design.

The flexibility allows for tankers to be adapted as the needs within a business change, while resale opportunities, especially in an economic environment where second-hand is in demand, are increasing significantly.

Turnaround times on maintenance services and repairs are reduced as critical components are

placed with accessibility and serviceability always in mind. The result is an innovative pneumatic-pipe and electric-cable routing-and-clamping system that allows direct and improved ease of access during diagnostic testing and replacement.

Minor but otherwise significant changes include consistency in the parts and operating systems from configuration to configuration; a homogeneous control panel on all the individual units; and a fresh look that portrays an image of elegance and professionalism wherever the tanker travels.

The Imvubu range comprises four models, 55 000 litre and 50 000 litre, and the smaller 39 000 litre and 33 000 litre tankers, designed for better mobility in tight areas while retaining the capacity to haul as much product as the local weight laws allow.

The IMVUBU range are sold with an optional extended warranty and maintenance contract, supported by GRW Service branches. An operator’s manual is provided to ensure the safe use of the equipment and the correct maintenance programme. Driver training is included in the terms of sale of each new unit.

An imvubu in isiZulu is a hippo. The hippopotamus is probably one of the most underestimated animals in Africa. It wallows in waterholes or rivers all day, often only its eyes and ears visible, the nostrils raised occasionally to breathe. When night falls the hippo ambles out to graze on the grass. Its looks belie its nature.

The name of the hippopotamus translates from the Ancient Greek as ‘river horse’. Recognisable by its barrel-shaped body, stubby legs and tremendous size, it is the third-largest land mammal by weight.

The hippopotamus is among the most aggressive creatures in the world, and is regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. The long, thick,

razor-sharp canine teeth, or tusks, are capable of biting a small boat in half. Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human on land. Hippos have been clocked at 30 kph (19 mph) over short distances. These animals can make a big impact - exactly the commanding performance GRW expects from its fuel tanker.

This comparison underpins GRW’s aggressive and unique approach to change in our industry. The creation of another industry first, the offer of an extended warranty, and full maintenance contract demonstrate GRW’s commitment to Quality. The Imvubu tanker offers flexibility, versatility, and agility, and excels on payload. It is light, moves well, yet is strong and durable. It stands aside for none.

Owners, users and managers make decisions on the acquisition and ongoing use of many different assets, including items of equipment.

The initial capital outlay cost is usually clearly defined and is a key factor influencing the choice of asset, when given a range of alternatives from which to select.

The initial capital outlay cost, however, is only one portion of the cost over an asset’s life cycle that needs to be considered in making the right choice for asset investment.

The total cost of ownership of an asset is often far greater than the initial capital outlay cost and can vary significantly between alternative solutions to a given operational need. Consideration of the costs over the whole life of an asset provides a sound basis for decision-making.

Direct Discharge Lines Option (SPD)

The Sealed Parcel Delivery System (SPD) process begins when a compartment is sealed after loading a fuel tank. The seal remains unbroken until delivery is made to the customer, at which point the compartment is completely emptied.

This system ensures that the quantity originally loaded at the terminal matches exactly with the quantity delivered to the customer.

PD Metered Option

Distribution of fuel to retailers (garages) requires smaller delivery quantities that are measured through a metering system.

Fuel is discharged from a compartment on the vehicle through a sealed meter that has been tested for accuracy.

Each meter has a ticket-printing mechanism that prints a delivery receipt showing the exact amount of fuel delivered to the customer.

Bartec Electronic SPD Option

An electronic control system for fuel tanks that controls bottom valves, pneumatic valves and doors. Also monitors contents of fuel level that have been loaded using a calibrated measurement system.

The advantages of the system include:• Identifies product contamination due

to driver error.• Monitors theft in all components of the

system.• Provides accurate metering system for

SPD• Accurately measures loaded quantity.• Monitors quantity in each compartment

facilitating maximum theft control.• Sustains high flow rates: ± 900-1000 L/

min vs ± 400-600 L/min on PD meters.• Effects faster turnaround time through

multiple discharge, and higher flow rates.

• Affords a lower tare weight than the conventional metered system.

• Eliminates moving and wear-susceptible parts.

Bridging Option

Transportation of fuel in bulk loads from the refinery to the terminal is usually referred to as a bridging delivery.

Bridging vehicles can load and discharge all compartments through one inlet and one outlet.

All compartments can be discharged at the same time effecting a reduction of handling and turnaround time.

Dynamic Design

Performance-Based Standards

Performance-Based Standards (PBS) is a procedure in the heavy vehicle sector. Standards are set to specified desired outcomes for the operation of a vehicle on a network, as opposed to how these outcomes should be achieved. They directly measure rollover tendency, stability, road-width used and pavement wear. Road Transport Management System (RTMS) certification is a prerequisite for participation in the PBS scheme.

The traditional approach of regulating heavy vehicles is prescriptive, enforcing limits to vehicle mass and dimensions. This is easy to carry out but does not always ensure the vehicle is safe and efficient.

The PBS approach allows for safer vehicles with more payload while reducing road wear and CO² emissions per tonne of payload transported.

Bartec To Measure is To Know

The only way to accurately monitor and quantify product loss is to have full visibility of the entire cycle of fuel transport. This requires that the gross and temperature-compensated (net) volume be known and recorded at the initial loading point. This volume must then be metered and checked for discrepancies when the load is delivered. Currently, the only product that accurately provides this complete perspective is the electronic dipstick system.

This system consists of individual electronic dipsticks fitted in each tanker compartment. The volume in the compartments is precisely measured during all operational steps of the transport cycle. This system ensures that the gross and net volume loaded and the gross and net volume discharged are accurately recorded. If the two sets do not tally within a certain prescribed tolerance, there has most likely been foul play.

Together with this functionality there are further benefits to using such a system: It is essentially a metered SPD delivery at 1200 ℓ/min – a significant increase when compared to the maximum of 700 ℓ/min on conventional meters.

Since there is an API for each compartment, three simultaneous deliveries can effectively be delivered at 3000 ℓ/min. Since there are no wear items, metering tolerance does not drift. The system also checks the pipe volume before each delivery and thus monitors loss of product from the pipework.

An ‘empty’ check is performed before initial loading of each delivery to confirm whether the compartment is indeed empty or not. This integrated function would obviates the need for personnel to climb onto the tank to check for LOBs, which mean that the ladder and handrail can be removed if the operation allows.

The system can easily be combined with an SPD-valve-monitoring system (SPDS) so that the APIs and manlids are constantly monitored for any operation that interferes with the normal sequence of the system.

GRW, in partnership with BARTEC (renowned suppliers of Ex equipment), has introduced BARTEC’s Volutank system with great success into the South African market. More than 200 tankers are currently measuring and monitoring their fuel with the Volutank system.
