Does anyone else here in northern NJ think we’ve been transported to the rain forests of South America? What wild weather! I hope that everyone has found a few days of sunshine and moderate temperatures during which to enjoy summer the way we should.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our September 12th meeting. I’m still working on a program. We will send an announcement out when we have something secured.Between now and the meeting I ask

everyone to take some time to think about your contributions to our club. You’ve already heard this from me and several of our previous presidents — Ramapo Kennel Club is what we make it. You get out what you put in. What have you put in? We are blessed to have a hard-working core of doers. They can be counted on to get the job(s) done. And there are many jobs, some of which are exceptionally time-consuming and often stressful. It is time for a changing of the guard. There are a few jobs that absolutely must be taken over this fall. I will not list them here, I will go through

them at the meeting. Some chairmen will be stepping down. If we are unable to fill their spots their committees may disappear. If that happens the club will be diminished. We cannot allow that to happen. Ramapo has been a high profile, active club for decades. We must pull together to keep it that way. Here is a list of our committees. Please look it over and see what is a good fit for you. And then please volunteer your time and energy to keep our club alive and vibrant. It truly IS up to you.

sick animals and exposing others is compounded by risky measures at the state level that force consumers to choose dogs identified as rescues or from random sources. For example, so-called “puppy mill”

legislation passed in 2017 in California eliminates the sale of dogs sourced from regulated professional breeders in pet shops throughout the state. Instead, pet stores are forced to sell only those animals obtained through shelters or so-called rescues.Limiting the sale of pets from regulated

professionals in favor of so-called rescues creates a perverse incentive to import greater numbers of street dogs and dogs of unknown origin for U.S. pet suppliers. The importation of dogs now has the

attention of U.S. lawmakers. House and Senate committees recently approved measures requiring the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide an estimate of the number of dogs annually imported into the country, along with an estimate

of how many of them lack proper health paperwork. The proposals were added to the farm bill, which is currently moving through Congress. The congressional proposals are a good

start to understand the breadth of the dog importation danger, but more needs to be done to protect public health:• The federal government should

strengthen efforts to ensure that all dogs imported into the United States are fully immunized, and free of infection, parasites and contagious diseases.• Imported dogs should be individually

certified as such by a qualified veterinarian.• No pet should be imported without an

individual examination, valid veterinary certificate, and documentation regarding the source of the dog and the party responsible for it upon arrival into the United States.• Perhaps most importantly, regulators

at the state and federal levels should boost direct oversight of rescues and shelters.

Don’t be fooled. Retail rescues comprise a large industry using marketing that emphasizes the feel-good aspect of choosing a dog from an unknown situation. This is in sharp contrast to more traditional approaches of acquiring a dog from a reputable breed rescue or a breeder that emphasizes known background, breed characteristics and purposeful breeding programs with valid paperwork attesting to the animal’s health.“Dogs are not our whole life, but they

make our lives whole,” said wildlife photographer Roger Caras. That sincere sentiment goes for a

purposefully bred and raised Labrador retriever, German shepherd or pug as much as it does a rescue animal. Americans should have the choice.Sheila Goffe is Vice President,

Gerrie Oliver’s new champion: a blue merle collie— CH Silhouette Silver Lace, co-owned by Gerrie Oliver & Elena Geldkop. She is the dam of Gerrie’s Colliecove Silhouette’s A Nickel’s Worth and lives in North Carolina.

George Falkner’s Saint Bernard, Alpine Mtn Intriguing Trixie earned her CGC on June 6, 2018. She graduated 2nd in her training class at our own Ramapo KC training class, and passed her Therapy Dog certification at the same time. She has since begun visits at the Sussex Wantage Library where children are reading books to her.

On July 14th George added a new member to his family:

An 8 week old Saint Bernard puppy came to our house and decided to stay. His name is Opdkyes Leonidas, Leo for short.

Sue and Dick Symons’, Yetti at 11 weeks. Dick is already working on sit, down, come, stand, walking on leash, tunnel, teeter & jumps at 4”, conformation stand, and tracking. She is very cute, loving and intelligent. She eats well, is 95% housebroken and loves to please.

Sue Leonard stopped for a show in Marshall MI Aug. 3 on the way to the Entlebucher Mt Dog specialty in MN. Oz and Sue got OH herding group 2 and Ed and Ernie got their first Barn Hunt ribbon. We like Michigan!

GCH Shadowalk Houston had a great show weekend in mid-July, winning 3 Bests of Breed at the Brookhaven Kennel Club and Twin Brooks dogs shows. He was not nearly as impressed as his very proud owner-handler, as is evident in the above Twin Brooks win shot . Hard to say if he didn’t like that bright green sports jacket or he was simply expressing his low tolerance for posing.

I’m only 4 months old and new at this correspondent stuff, so give me a break with grammar and spelling...your usual reporter, “Friday,” is snoozing on the stone hearth in this heat, so I thought I’d give this writing thing a try...The topic is supposed to be about water dogs...”Friday” is

a real water dog and will swim at any opportunity, but she refuses do go out in the rain...the swimming stuff is OK...I can do it, admittedly with a splashy awkward paddle, but I really prefer to wade along the shoreline...it’s lots of fun to hop and

jump on little unsuspecting fish...I don’t mind the rain and love to attack the garden hose monster...I was very surprised when “Friday” went for a bath and I suddenly found myself in the tub, covered in soap suds...how did THAT happen?...On another topic, I’m looking forward to starting classes next

month...I’ve been told I have a lot to learn...I already know SIT, DOWN, PAW, GIVE, COME, SPIN, OTHER WAY, TAKE IT...my leash walking could use some polish...my human and I don’t agree about me holding the leash in my mouth...what the heck, she has one end...why shouldn’t I hold the other end?...Now that “Friday” is retired from rally and obedience

competition, I have some big paw prints to fill...she still does pet therapy, but is slowing down...we’ve already discussed that she can retire from visits as soon as I am qualified...she is so well known at the hospitals that I will have to make my own mark...she’s a tough act to follow...UH OH, “Friday” is beginning to wake up...I don’t want her

to think I’m trying to usurp her reporter career too...bet she’ll want to go swimming and I’ll tag along for some water fun...hope you’re enjoying the summer!...
