Growth & Change
Growth • Over the past ~10 years we have seen a rapid growth in our research activity
• This ties in with our changing mandate
Change • Where we have received funding from, and where it has gone has also changed

Eligibility Variability! SSHRC, University; NSERC, College; CIHR, none…
Community Engagement Based in our history as a Community College; we still have strong ties with community groups, and local businesses
Non-Traditional Sources Relatively little (and declining) of our funding is from “standard research grants”; industry sponsorship, and co-sponsorship are in the majority
Collaboration Relatively easy for us; small institution, small research clusters, pre-programmed for Interdisciplinary research

Significance? Kwantlen has no faculty “review” process that includes scholarly output
Therefore, there has been little motivation to publish
This culture is changing as newer faculty recognize the need for peer reviewed articles to support grant applications

What are we doing about “it”?
Different Model Not the normal funding streams, nor the normal “tech. transfer” model ones associates with research intensive universities.
Community Engagement Partnerships bring ideas into the University
Students Get them involved. These are employees of the future
Collaboration University, Federal Government funding, and local Industry are coming together to improve business outcomes and deliverables
