2009 AT A GLANCE

What is a Community Foundation? A community foundation is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization created by and for the people of a specific geographic area that serves as a vehicle to connect people who care with causes that matter. To carry out the objectives of donors, contributions from individuals, families, corporations, organizations, private foundations, and governmental entities are carefully invested for maximum return and growth with the income from endowed funds used to make grants in support of programs and organizations that benefit the community.

OUR MISSION• To enhance the quality of life in the greater Siouxland tri-state area by

seeking and managing charitable gifts to build permanent endowments

• To provide a flexible vehicle to receive and distribute gifts of all sizes

• To make grants in response to community needs

• To provide services that will help shape the well-being of Siouxland

TYPES OF FUNDSThe Foundation offers flexibility in meeting the needs and interests of donors. We work with individuals, families, corporations, nonprofit organizations, foundations and financial advisors to create funds with the terms and conditions to carry out the donor’s desired charitable intent.

Unrestricted - Unrestricted gifts to this endowment fund provide the Foundation with the greatest flexibility to respond to the ever-changing needs of Siouxland. Grants are awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors in the areas of arts and culture, civic affairs, education, health, and human services.

Designated - Donor names one or more charitable nonprofit organizations to receive distributions of income from the fund in perpetuity.

Donor-Advised - These funds are excellent vehicles for those who wish to participate actively in the grantmaking process as the donor retains the right to make grant recommendations.

Field of Interest - Donor specifies one or more charitable fields of personal interest (arts, environment, education, youth, social welfare, recreation, etc.) and asks the Foundation to invite grant proposals from nonprofit organizations providing services in those fields.

Scholarship - Donor may establish a scholarship fund to help students pursue post-secondary education.

Agency Endowments - A nonprofit organization can establish its endowment within the Foundation to provide a perpetual source of support.

Affiliate Community Foundations - Funds may be established within the Foundation for the exclusive benefit of a specific geographic area.

Special Purpose - The Foundation will receive and hold contributions from individuals, corporations, and other organizations that wish to establish a temporary fund to benefit a particular cause or campaign.

An endowment fund is created to provide a permanent source of support to be used for charitable purposes. When you create a fund, you have the opportunity to benefit the community forever with a permanent endowment. Your gift grows over time, and earnings are used to carry out your charitable goals. The principal of the fund is never spent.

One Gift, Many Generations... The Power of Endowment

Growing Stronger Together: CSADV Grows Endowment through Foundation Partnership For the past 20 years, requests for services at the Council on Sexual As-sault and Domestic Violence (CSADV) have grown, but funding sources have not. Funding concerns prompted the board of directors to establish an endowment at the Siouxland Community Foundation. “Our financial support varies each year, and so we established an endowment to provide financial stability that would always be available,” states Margaret Sanders, executive director of CSADV.

“Donors appreciate the fact we only utilize interest from the endowment. If a nonprofit holds an endowment privately, the board could be tempted to structure it so the principal could be spent during tough economic times. But the fund at the Community Foundation is a true endowment, and that’s what donors want.”

A big plus to partnering with the Community Foundation is relying on their investment knowledge. “We have a better and safer return than if we held the endowment privately. The Community Foundation’s experts know how to invest, and that allows us to concentrate on carrying out our mission of saving lives of women and children in crisis.”

The Siouxland Community Foundation welcomes contributions of virtually any kind, in any amount. Gifts may be made during one’s lifetime, or through a bequest or trust.

Each individual, family, or organization we work with has unique charitable interests and unique financial circumstances. We help you make the most of both, so you receive the greatest return on your community investment. Gifts may be directed to an existing fund or you may establish a new fund.

CHARITABLE GIFTS MUST BE MADE:• To a qualified Community Foundation. Siouxland Community Foundation is a

“qualified community foundation that meets national standards. In 2005, Siouxland Community Foundation was certified by the National Council on Foundations.

• To a permanent endowment fund (existing or newly established) within Siouxland Community Foundation.

• For the benefit of one or more Iowa charitable causes. • By individuals, corporations, or financial institutions.

THE TAX CREDIT:• Is 25% of the gift amount for each donation. The tax credit is in addition to federal

and state income tax deductions for charitable gifts.• Cannot be used on prior year’s taxes. Iowa taxpayers may use the tax credit the year

of the receipt of the tax credit letter from the Iowa Dept. of Economic Development. Excess credit not used in the authorized tax year may be carried forward for up to five tax years.

• Is issued on a “first come, first serve” basis with approximately $4 million in tax credits available each year.

There’s a common thread that runs through the 120 funds at the Siouxland Community Foundation: the goal of improving life through informed charitable giving. By serving as a vehicle for philanthropic vision and careful tax planning, Siouxland Community Foundation enables donors to achieve a greater impact. But there is one fund upon which the other 119 rely – the Administrative Fund. It is the engine that makes Siouxland Community Foundation run, the driving force behind all of our efforts. Its supports our infrastructure, secures our future, and makes new initiatives possible. These behind the scene supporters are truly “Friends of the Foundation”.Your commitment to the Siouxland Community Foundation puts your generosity to use for a host of social and economic benefits. We extend our deepest gratitude for our 2009 Friends of the Foundation.

INVESTMENTSContributions to charitable component funds of the Siouxland Community Foundation are pooled for investment purposes. A system of unitization, much like a mutual fund, allocates total return to each component fund. These component funds represent a collection of the interests of individual donors and agencies in building a strong foundation for the future of Siouxland.

Pooling funds permits greater diversification of investments than is possible for single funds. The Foundation’s Investment Committee oversees the Investment Managers. Security National Bank and Wells Fargo Bank provide professional investment management of the Foundation’s assets.

Copies of the Siouxland Community Foundation’s audited financial statements and IRS Form 990 (Form 990-T, if applicable) are available upon request.
