What an incredible year 2019 has been! Myfavorite moments include onboardingRegional Coordinators in New Zealand,Southern Africa, and the Nordic Countries, releasing the first iteration of ourCurriculum Development Handbook, ourJune lesson release (36 lessons werepublished!), the excitement we receivedfrom the community about our Equity,Inclusion, and Accessibility Roadmap,CarpentryConnect Manchester, and ofcourse, the release of our vision statement, nine core values, and strategic plan. Thisyear we also bid farewell to TheCarpentries first Executive Director, Dr.Tracy Teal. We are extremely excited aboutall that the organisation accomplishedunder her leadership, and as your ExecutiveDirector I cannot tell you how proud I am ofthe work our Core Team and community isundertaking during this transition. Of the many challenges and opportunities(“chopportunities”) we prepared for in2020, one could not have expected to facea global pandemic. We must now adjust theways we work together and prioritise ourwork as COVID-19 continues to impact us inunprecedented ways. We understand theimpact this crisis has on our community asthe world shifts to virtual instruction. Theimportance of digital skills is undeniable;educators and organisations are rallyingtogether to support effective instructionalstrategies.

The Carpentries supports 1,700+ highlyskilled instructors and an establisheddigital skills curricula. We have experiencetraining educators. We are uniquelypositioned to support the shift in thenature of education around the world. With$2.65 million in funding from the Gordonand Betty Moore Foundation and ChanZuckerberg Initiative for scaling ourinstructor training and curriculumdevelopment programs, we are ready torespond to this challenge. Now more thanever we need you to champion our mission.Let’s rise to the occasion - together. Onward.

This second year of being The Carpentrieshas transformed our community from aloose conglomeration of individuals into aunified organism working in support of adefined set of community values. We areproud of our substantial growth ofcommunity members and increases inglobal participation and are excited thatour new members are beginning theirexperiences under this unified Carpentriesidentity. We may be working acrossheterogenous domains, audiences, andexperience levels, but our shared missionand vision bind us together. The ExecutiveCouncil’s goals for 2020 are to moveforward priorities identified on thestrategic plan developed by the 2019Executive Council, and to continue to growstrategically while developing innovativemethods of sustainability and scalingacross the globe.

In 2018, Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, and Software Carpentry came together asa single organisation, dedicated to buildinga stronger community for teaching thecomputational skills we believe are key toresearch in many different fields. In 2019,members of each of these LessonPrograms contributed to our community-wide efforts to express our joint Mission,Vision, and Values that will provideguideposts and touchpoints for thebroader organisation as we reach out tomore people in more places and in morelanguages.

In partnership with our community, wearticulated our vision statement - to bethe leading inclusive community teachingdata and coding skills - along with the corevalues that define our community ethos. We established a strategic plan to guideour work in line with these values over thenext three to five years and we joined withour community to express gratitude forone another in our varied roles.

In the first half of 2020, we are focusing on hiring and onboarding new Core Teammembers to support our curriculum development, community development, andinstructor training programs. This includes working with our fiscal sponsor CommunityInitiatives to develop a sustainable and scalable approach to international contracting- enabling our Core Team to become more representative of our global community. Weare also bringing onboard our new Executive Director, who will lead our Executive Teamin guiding the strategic direction of The Carpentries. To help our community meet the challenge of COVID-19, we are establishing processesfor delivering our workshops online, while maintaining our high quality of instruction,real-time feedback, and one-on-one support for learners. In the remainder of the year, we will be developing continuing education offerings forinstructors, improving accessibility of our website and lesson template, refining ourcommunications strategy, and updating our membership model to fit organisations atdifferent stages in their development as a self-sufficient Carpentries community. It’sgoing to be quite a year!

The theme of our inaugural global conference in2018 was “Building Locally, Connecting Globally.”

Our community has since held four regionalconferences on as many continents to continue
