BEHAVING CHRISTIANLY ~ THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Part 4: Commandments Five We are continuing to explore the teaching of the Catechism and how the Ten Com- mandments teach us both about Gods character and how to live in Gods grace as we love Him and our neighbor, thus fulfilling the Law. This month, we will examine commandment five: Honor your father and mother. The fifth commandment comes with a promise of blessing, that your days may be long in the land(Ex. 20:12). This isnt so much a personal promise that honoring our parents means that we will live a long life as it is a corporate promise that the society where elders are hon- ored will be a stable one. Why is that so? Because as children are learning to obey parents, they are also learning to obey God and to submit to God-given authority. Children should honor, serve, respect, love, and care for [parents] all their lives. We continue, as adults, to keep the commandment in love to God by showing respect for the aged; submitting to my teachers, pastors, and directors; respecting tradition and civil authority…” As parents, then, we teach our children obedience for their own good and for the good of society. That will mean training and discipline, for obedience does not come naturally to us. It does not, though, mean ruling harshly over children. As Paul taught, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the disci- pline and instruction of the Lord(Eph. 6:4). In other words, parents are to treat their children with loving respect, which will mean listening to them, respecting their individuality and intelligence, and helping them understand the reasons for the things they are being asked to obey. As we are taught to live in loving obedience, we promote harmony and peace in our relationships, for obedi- ence to God will result in a life of love, not destructive self-centeredness. But we not only teach children obedience to promote the common good, we teach them obedience in order to raise them in the knowledge and love of God. Psychologists have pointed out that in formative early years, parents essentially are God to their children. When children learn that loving obedience yields blessing in the life of their family, it shapes them for a lifetime of obedience to God. Let that, though, be clarified. Loving obedience is not destructive, fearful and coercive obedience – that pro- duces death. Blessing is not rewarding obedience with prizes (do what I say and Ill give you a cookie), but is the proper fruit of righteous behavior (not lying produces trust). As parents, we have a huge responsibility in raising our children, and the way we do so impacts their personal and spiritual lives as well as the life of our community and society. BEHAVING CHRISTIANLY ~ THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Part 4: Commandments Five

We are continuing to explore the teaching of the Catechism and how the Ten Com-mandments teach us both about God’s character and how to live in God’s grace as we love Him and our neighbor, thus fulfilling the Law. This month, we will examine commandment five:

Honor your father and mother. The fifth commandment comes with a promise of blessing, “that your days may be long in the land” (Ex. 20:12). This isn’t so much a personal promise that honoring our parents means that we will live a long life as it is a corporate promise that the society where elders are hon-ored will be a stable one. Why is that so? Because as children are learning to obey parents, they are also learning to obey God and to submit to God-given authority. Children should “honor, serve, respect, love, and care for [parents] all their lives.” We continue, as adults, to keep the “commandment in love to God by showing respect for the aged; submitting to my teachers, pastors, and directors; respecting tradition and civil authority…” As parents, then, we teach our children obedience for their own good and for the good of society. That will mean training and discipline, for obedience does not come naturally to us. It does not, though, mean ruling harshly over children. As Paul taught, “do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the disci-pline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). In other words, parents are to treat their children with loving respect, which will mean listening to them, respecting their individuality and intelligence, and helping them understand the reasons for the things they are being asked to obey. As we are taught to live in loving obedience, we promote harmony and peace in our relationships, for obedi-ence to God will result in a life of love, not destructive self-centeredness. Loving obedience is not destructive, fearful and coercive obedience – that pro-duces death. Blessing is not rewarding obedience with prizes (do what I say and I’ll give you a cookie), but is the proper fruit of righteous behavior (not lying produces trust). As parents, we have a huge responsibility in raising our children, and the way we do so impacts their personal and spiritual lives as well as the life of our community and society. Yours in Christ,

It is so much fun to see the little ones dressed up. If you would like to donate a bag of candy that we can give out to the children, it would be greatly appreciated. Just drop it off at the church office during this month.
