From Father Shawn Tunink, Parochial Vicar: If you had to say what Lent is about in one word, what would it be? Here’s my answer: Baptism. The Church has always celebrated Easter, the most important day of the year, but the season of Lent was added to the calendar as a time of preparation for those who were going to be baptized at Easter. Eventually, even the faithful who had already been baptized joined in as a way to prepare to renew their own promises of baptism. Our Lenten disci-plines of prayer, faster, and almsgiving are meant to prepare us to renew our baptismal promises at Easter. We can summarize this promises in two parts: Reject Satan : Choose God. In order to do the second part better, we’ve got to get better at rejecting Satan. This is why we discipline our-selves during Lent. We reject lesser things that are normally good so that we can more easily reject the big bad things that Satan throws at us. Reject Satan : Choose God. Our Christian life began with sacred promises to engage in that battle. Lent is the time for some to prepare for baptism and for the rest of us to get stronger and recommit. Lent is all about baptism.

Rechaza a Satanás: Elige a Dios.

A Message From Catholic Cemeteries Catholic Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas is com-mitted to maintain the ministry of the Catholic Church to bury the dead with dignity and respect. Catholic Cemeteries has always held excellent customer service as its number one priority when providing funeral arrangements for the Catholic community. It is our goal to build relationships with parish priests, parishioners, funeral homes, parish staff, and above all, our families we have the op-portunity to serve. In order to strengthen Catholic Cemeteries team, improve customer service to our families, and fulfill our mission statement of burying the dead with dignity and comforting the living with compassion, Catholic Cemeteries has recently re-organized its staff. We have hired a new Sales and Marketing Manager, Bryan Alonzo. He has a newly formed Family Service Advisors Team that in-cludes John Krumm, Peggy Cox, Charlie Owens, Gary Ortiz, Carla Yarnell, Teresa McGuire, Tom Spalding, John Long and Tony Kruzic. At this time, these are the only advisors from Catholic Cemeter-ies who will contact parishioners of the Archdio-cese of Kansas City in Kansas for their final end of life arrangements. If you receive a call from any-one other than these ten individuals, please know that permission has not been given to him/her from Catholic Cemeteries or your parish. If you receive a call from an individual whose name is not on this list, please inform us immediately at 913-344-7501. We look forward to helping all parishioners of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas with their end of life decisions. Please know that Catholic Cemeteries is an extension of your Catholic Church. We are dedicated to respectfully care for the dead and provide a place of comfort for family members and friends.

Walking With Moms in Need A Year of Service

Pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and neighborhoods. As Pope Francis re-minds us, our parishes should be “islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference.” Everyone in our parish community should know where to refer a pregnant woman in need. Beginning March 25, 2020, the Church will celebrate the 25th anniver-sary of the papal encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life). This anniversary gives us a won-derful opportunity to assess, expand and better share the resources available to pregnant women and families in need at our parish level. We invite all parishioners to join the “Walking With Moms” initiative and a year of service.

Walking With Moms A Year of Service Kick-Off

Mass & Walk: Sunday March 29, 2020 Location: Cathedral of St. Peter, 409 N. 15, KCK Schedule: 10:00 a.m.: Mass with Archbishop Naumann 11:15 a.m.: Awareness Walk All are invited to gather at the Cathedral outdoor steps to join in a short walk to raise awareness for the initiative and the organizations that are ready to help women in need. Participants are encour-aged to carry a sign with the name of their parish or organization that represents help to women in need. 12:15 pm: Reception follows Walk in the Cathedral Parish Center. Coffee and snacks will be served.

A PRAYER FOR PREGNANT MOTHERS O Blessed Mother, you received the good news of the incarnation of Christ, your Son, with faith and trust. Grant your pro-tection to all pregnant mothers facing diffi-culties. Guide us as we strive to make our parish communities places of welcome and assis-tance for mothers in need. Help us become instruments of God’s love and compassion. Mary, Mother of the Church, graciously help us build a culture of life and a civili-zation of love, together with all people of good will, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life.* Amen. *Cf.
