  • From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor: I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace

of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus…..so that You are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of

our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 1.8)

This will be our first Advent Sea-son in a pandemic (and hopefully our only one!). As a liturgical season, Ad-vent is well prepared to handle the un-certainty that we feel in our everyday lives. The Church names Advent as a season of “joyful expectation.” We are joyfully anticipating what God will do for us in our lives and in our world.

For me the phrase that best de-scribes Advent is “already, not yet.” Christ is already among us and not yet fully revealed. Or as St. Paul says, we are not lacking in any spiritual gift as we are awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe the lens of “already, not yet” can help us as we negotiate De-cember 2020. Many aspects of our dai-ly lives and routines for the holiday sea-son will be and already have been dis-rupted. And yet, there are many things that are the same….. So, as our travel plans are modified

or even cancelled let’s pay attention to the opportunities of being together in our homes.

Scripture Readings for Week of November 30—December 6

    Mon/Lun: Romans 10:9-18; Matthew 4:18-22 Tue/Mar: Isaiah 11:1-10; Luke 10:21-24 Wed/Mie: Isaiah 25:6-10a; Matthew 15:29-37 Thur/Jue: Isaiah 26:1-6; Matthew 7:21, 24-27 Fri/Vie: Isaiah 29:17-24; Matthew 9:27-31 Sat/Sab: Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26; Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8 Sun/Dom: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11; 2 Peter 3:8-14 Mark 1:1-8

Masks and social distance may be a sacrifice for us to follow and yet, it is a beautiful gift to those around us.

We may not gather as an extended family to go to mass, and yet we can deepen our own connections to our parish in this prayerful time.

We perhaps have complained in the past that there is too much going on in December and there’s no time to reflect—well, the Lord has given us an opportunity this coming month to light a candle and sit in silence in our home.

Instead of running around like crazy shopping and trying to fulfill the perfect Christmas list the Lord will be revealed in a new simpler plan for this year.

Christ is already at work among us and will be revealed in each day of Advent. Let us keep watch!

Advent Prayer for Families Heavenly Father, your son, Jesus, is your

greatest gift to us, a great sign of your love. Guide us as we strive to walk in that love together as a family this Advent. As we

prepare our hearts for Christmas, bring us closer to each other and your son. Give us the grace and strength we need every day. Help us to always trust in you. Come, Lord Jesus, lead all people closer to you. Come

and dispel the darkness of our world with the light of your love. Amen.

¡Vigilemos!

    Christmas Gift Cards Needed

We all want to assist others this Christmas season and what better way than to give a gift card to Walmart or Price Chopper to those needing assis-tance this year instead of the gifts as in previous years. Gift cards can be returned to the rectory office, school office, School of Religion anytime before December 7. Please indicate the amount of the gift card and place in an envelope marked Christmas Appeal. Thank you for your continued generosity this Christmas season. SAVE THE DATE: January 21, 2021! KS Bish-ops’ Mass, March & Rally for Life in Topeka!

The annual Kansas Mass for the Legal Protection of the Unborn, and the March & Rally for Life will take place this year in Topeka, KS on Thursday, January 21, 2021. 10:30 am Mass with the Kan-sas Bishops – Livestreamed! 12 pm March to the State Capitol for the Kansans for Life Rally. All are invited to join in the March for Life from the Tope-ka Performing Arts Center to the state capitol for the Kansans for Life Rally at the capitol steps. Stay tuned for more detailed information and the livestream links. Visit the www.archkck.org/prolife website for continued updated information and de-tails on the day’s event.

“Value Them Both” Petition Please pray for the passage of the Value Them Both amendment. What is VALUE THEM BOTH? VTB is the proposed state constitutional amend-ment for life supported by the Catholic Bishops of Kansas. The amendment is crucial because the Kansas Supreme Court recently created a nearly unlimited “right” to abortion in our state. This means that all of our existing pro-life laws includ-ing bans on taxpayer-funded and late-term abor-tions, and parental consent requirements will be considered unconstitutional once challenged. The VALUE THEM BOTH amendment will reverse the Supreme Court ruling and once again allow Kan-sans, through their elected representatives, to pass laws that will help protect mothers and their unborn babies from the abortion industry. Please pray for passage of VALUE THEM BOTH.

  • Christmas Flowers In Memory Of …

Although contribution envelopes specific to Flow-ers and/or Memorial Flowers was not included with the offertory envelopes, you may donate to-ward Christmas flowers in memory of a loved one. Checks will be accepted at the parish office or in the weekend offertory through December 18. Please be certain to indicate on your envelope or in the memo line of your check that the donation is for flowers in the name of your deceased loved one. The list of Loved Ones will be published in a bulletin shortly after Christmas. Thank you for your contribution to add to the beauty of the Christmas season and the Church! #iGiveCatholic on #GivingTuesday which

is Tuesday, December 1 Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday are recent additions to our Thanksgiving tradi-tions. #iGiveCatholic began as an online day to give gifts to God through your favorite charity in the midst of shopping for gifts for others . . . and don’t you agree that St. Patrick’s Parish is our fa-vorite charity?! How much to give? Is it 10% tithe on what we spend on Black Friday plus a 10% tithe on Cyber Monday? Oh wait, is it how much we earn over Thanksgiving? How exactly DO we choose how much to give? Are there special pro-jects (other than costly & constant covid cleaning) for St. Patrick’s? How do I get started? Go to www.igivecatholic.org and search for St. Patrick Parish (Kansas City) for our page. Simple and easy! You can even give as early as Nov. 16 up until Tuesday, December 1. As we plan our year-end and holiday giving, why not start with a gener-ous donation to St. Patrick’s! As we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for you!! https://kansascity.igivecatholic.org/organizations/

Catholic Planned Giving Brief: Thanksgiving – Sharing Life’s Gifts

You have spent this challenging year persevering with faith to provide for your family, parish, and neighbors in need. The Office of Stewardship and Development is grateful for the abundant gifts you have returned to your parish and the Archdiocese during this year of uncertainty. You have put the “Catholic” in stewardship and planned giving. For more about sharing our gifts, visit the Archdioce-san website, CatholicPlannedGiving.com.

Due to the earlier bulletin deadlines for the holiday, the

financial report is not included in this issue. An updated report

will be in the next bulletin!

Can you help with these items? The parish is using a considerable amount of dis-infecting wipes, hand sanitizer and solution for the mister to keep parishioners safe. Extra containers of wipes and donations to offset cost of the mister solution are greatly appreciated! Please bring do-nations to parish office or leave items with staff member, Theresa Smith on Sundays!

Ready to start shopping for gifts? Did you know you can donate to

St. Patrick Parish when making an Amazon purchase?

    1. Visit smile.amazon.com and sign in with your Amazon ID and password.

    2. Click on Account at the top of the screen. 3. Under “Other Programs,” Click “Change your

Amazon Smile charity.” Search for St. Patrick Catholic Church and School. You should see Kansas City KS to the side. Amazon will do-nate .5% of each purchase (before tax and shipping) to St. Patrick’s. It adds up!

    4. The key is to then remember to sign on to Amazon.Smile to place your orders.

Training is required before volunteering with children

at the parish or school. To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Trainings can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Your account must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordi-nator, 299-3728 or [email protected].

Reporting Suspected Abuse Archdiocese remains committed to investigating any allegation of abuse of a minor made against any member of the clergy or any church employee or volunteer—no matter the age of incident or cur-rent age of the victim. Individuals are encouraged to call confidential report line at 913-647-3051 or archkck.org/reportabuse to make a report to Jan Saylor, archdiocesan report investigator, and to call law enforcement directly. If a child or vulnera-ble adult is in immediate danger, call 911.
