“It wasn’t until I was ready to start a family that I discovered just how difficult it would be,” says Carrie Wilson.

When they first started trying to have a baby, Carrie and Chris Wilson experienced two miscarriages between August 2009 and March 2010.

“After the second miscarriage we transferred our care to Kettering Reproductive Medicine,” says Carrie.

Offering comprehensive fertility care and treatment since 1998, Kettering Reproductive Medicine is the most experienced fertility clinic in the Greater Dayton Area. Mark Bidwell, MD, and Joe Karnitis, MD, are board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology, and work alongside a specialty-trained nursing and lab team.

“Dr. Bidwell determined that I had poor egg quality. All options were presented to my husband and me. We were thankful for the honest opinions, disappointed that we may never have a child with my DNA, but hopeful that we would still be successful with whichever path we chose,” says Carrie.

Joy and heartbreak Carrie and Chris decided to utilize in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment with Carrie’s eggs accompanied with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and assisted hatching of the embryos.

“On the fourth IVF cycle, we received our first positive pregnancy test in two years! We were pregnant with twins,” says Carrie.

When one twin passed away at eight weeks, it was a very emotional day for the Wilsons.

“We had never made it past eight weeks in a pregnancy, so we were elated that one baby had survived beyond that point, but also heartbroken for the baby we lost,” explains Carrie.

Claira was born in December 2012. When Claira was just over a year old, Carrie and Chris decided to return to Kettering Reproductive Medicine to try for baby number two.

A second miracle After an additional three IVF cycles, the Wilsons received a positive pregnancy test. “Miracle baby number two, Cambri, was born in July 2015,” says Carrie. “It’s been a long journey, but miracles do happen.”
