✓ PROTECTING FROM THE COLD. If frosts are announced, water your plants to increase thermal inertia. Check regularly to make sure that the covers, frost blankets, windscreens and other protections are doing their job.

✓ PRUNING. If you still have to rid any shrub, ornamental or fruit tree of dry, weak or twisted branches, take your pruning shears now to prevent them from losing their sap; don’t touch the ones that are to bloom in February. Trim herbaceous plants that have stopped blooming, like chrysanthemums or asters.

✓ HOE THE SOIL. Break and crumble the dry crust that the cold and rain create in the soil of your garden and pots using a hoe or a trowel.

LAWN

✓ If it frosts, avoid stepping on it and water a little bit to avoid it getting burning from the cold.✓ Watch the formation of permanent puddles to avoid moss and lichen.

BLOSSOMING PLANTS

✓ Give potassium and phosphorus-rich fer-tilizer to your hellebo-res, pansies, heathers, cyclamens, Bellis perennis and other blooming species…

ROSE BUSHES

✓ As soon as your grafted bushes, hy-brid teas, floribundas and patio roses start budding, prune them thoroughly by cutting on an angle with clean, sharp shears.

VEGGIE GARDEN

✓ December is the best month to plant garlic.✓ Sow Swiss chard, spinach and carrots directly into soil; and turnip and lettuce in seedbeds.
