In planning the Mid-Peninsula’s first quarterly play date

our only hope was to reach families looking to connect with La Leche League in some way or another. The day played out as hoped and we own many thanks to The

Little Gym, Family Wise Estate Planning and all of our vendors for their support. The day was the perfect setting to celebrate the opening of our San Bruno, San Mateo

and Redwood City groups. We hope you were able to make it and return for future community outreach events hosted by Mid-Peninsula La Leche League!

Nursing a Toddler

by Janis Chrissikos, www.compleatmother.com/poems

Sticky little chubby hands pull my shirt, clearly it’s time to

nurse. Now I have blue yogurt on my white bra, I know it

could be worse!

She’s too busy for cuddles and kisses, we nurse to keep us in

touch. She wants to be big like her big sister, sometimes its

just too much.

So up on Mama’s lap she climbs again, for comfort and a

snack. I hold her close, sweet and soft as she rests, glad my

baby is back.

I watch as she acts so independent, but nursing reminds

me. Not to hurry her to grow up too fast, for time will still find

me.

Friends try not to act surprised but all say, “When will she ever

wean?” I smile, “Well, I guess when she has classes, she can

nurse in between!”

Tricks of the Trade… Going back to work?

Nowadays returning to work is a more common

concern for breastfeeding mothers than in years

past. It can be especially daunting for mothers

with concerns about milk supply.

LLL’s philosophy is that “In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his

mother which is as basic as his need for food.” Postponing your return to work as long

as possible is one good strategy. If possible visit your baby on lunch breaks to allow him

to nurse. You can also request that the baby be brought to you if leaving your work

place isn’t an option.

Keep in mind that nursing marathons are common

at the end of the day once the baby reconnects

with mom. Allowing your baby to make up for lost

time maintains your established milk supply and

bond with the child. Some mothers find that the

best way to balance work and home is to do as

much as possible at night once the baby is asleep.

Keep discussions with your partner open and

honest about working, continued breastfeeding

and at home responsibilities.

What about PUMPING?

A very common concern working mothers have about pumping is how much milk they will need. Keep in mind that babies often cluster feed towards the end of the day for reasons beyond hunger. Caregivers often confuse these cues with hunger. Educate your caregiver about the benefits of baby wearing, proper bottle feeding and other topics concerning the breastfed baby.

Public Breastfeeding and the Law

State laws that protect public breastfeeding fall into

three categories. Currently, the strongest state laws are

those that both protect a woman's right to breastfeed

anywhere she or her child have a right to be, regardless

of whether the breast is showing, and that also give the

woman the power to bring a legal action against

anyone who interferes with her breastfeeding. (A child

has a right to breastfeed, but no law in the US us

currently drafter to protect the right to breastfeed in

public, from the child’s perspective). Other state laws

establish a woman's right to breastfeed in public, but

don't provide a way for her to enforce this right. The

third category specifies that the act of breastfeeding is

not indecent exposure (sometimes given other names,

but always referring to the exposure of body parts), and

prevent a woman from being charged with a sex crime

for breastfeeding.

What is LACTIVISM? Definition from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“LACTIVISM is a term used to describe the advocacy of breastfeeding. Supporters,

referred to as ‘lactivists’, seek to promote the health benefits of breastfeeding over formula-feeding and to ensure that nursing mothers are not discriminated against.”

Recent news surrounding lactivism involves Facebook and its members’ breastfeeding

photos. Facebook has said it has no problem with breastfeeding but classifies

breastfeeding photos showing nipples as being in violation of their rules and can be

removed. A group called “Hey Facebook, Breastfeeding Is Not Obscene!” protests the

policy.

Member Corner… All About Us!

Meet Michele former nursing mother and membership sponsor

Steve and I have been married for 42 years, raised four

wonderful kids, have two precious grandchildren. We

live in Utah and love to hike, especially in our National

Parks (Bryce and Zion). I enjoy volunteering, cooking

and spending time with family in Utah, California and

Port Angeles, Washington. We were living in New Jersey

when our first child was born. I wanted to breastfeed

and my physician recommended I check out the local

chapter of LLL. They were wonderful... answered all my

questions and I became good friends with several of the

Moms. Naturally, when our daughter, Kathryn was

expecting I wanted her to have the same kind of positive

and helpful experience so I checked on the internet and

found a local LLL group ( Mid Peninsula Chapter) and

passed the information along
