Objective: Inventory the Emergency Blue Light Phones on the UNCC Campus and analyze the accessibility and visibility of the phones.

• Charlotte Streets (Lines)• UNCC campus sidewalks/paths (Lines)• Phone locations located with GPS (Points)• Building footprints and heights (Polygon)• Elevation contour lines (converted to DEM)• Orthophoto of campus (reference)

Goals:

• Locate and display phones within the study area• Study and display the phone density coverage(poor-

excellent)• Analyze and display the areas served within (3mph)/

(5km/h) and (6mph)(10 km/h) travel time of phones while using the street/path network

• Study and display the service area using Euclidean distance

• Study and display areas within sight of phones• Determine where additional phones are needed

Global Position Systems (GPS)

• Obtained latitude/longitude coordinates for 85 emergency phones on campus

• Placed points onto campus map with ArcGIS

Density Analysis

• Reflects the concentration patterns of phone points over the study area

• Identifies areas of High Concentration (Excellent Coverage) or areas of Low Concentration (Poor Coverage)

• Areas of Poor Coverage were identified along Mary Alexander Road

• In addition areas around the intersection of Broderick Blvd and University Road (at the old 49er Miner statue) had Poor Coverage

Network Analysis

• Links line attribute data and phone points so that transportation interactions can be modeled

• Phone user travels along the network of streets/paths at speeds of 3mph(5kmh), 6mph(10kmh) for 1 minute

• Model would be useful at night since buildings are closed and user would be more apt to take lighted street/paths

• Areas along Mary Alexander Road were only covered at 6mph speeds

• Areas at the intersection of Broderick Blvd and University Road were not covered or only covered at 6mph speeds

Euclidean Distance

• Represents area covered if the phone user were to travel in a straight direction toward the phone

• No obstructions or buildings are taken into consideration• Buffer of 75 feet around each phone was used• Same areas along Mary Alexander Road and areas at the

intersection of Broaderick Blvd and University Rd continue to show poor coverage

Visibility Analysis

• Represents areas where the phone is visible• Terrain Elevation data converted to Raster format and combined

with building footprints and heights• Observer Offset was 6 feet and Blue light Offset was 10 feet• Some areas had visibility of 2 phones• Same areas along Mary Alexander Road and areas at the

intersection of Broaderick Blvd and University Rd continue to show poor coverage

Project Issues

• GPS – Battery Quality Issues• View shed- Only took into account DEM and buildings. Trees

were not accounted for which would block view of blue lights.• Network – A lot of time spent correcting errors in the incomplete

street and pedestrian network• Data sharing- Challenge with data replication between group

members
