Dangote Cement : Aggressive Expansion Plans
Nigeria - Africa’s most populous nation is in dire need of upgrading
its infrastructure and providing new roads and housing to support a
rapidly growing population of 154 million people. Nigeria’s cement
consumption pattern is observed to be the least in the World due
to high cement cost and short supply.
Dangote Cement caters to over 50 % of Nigeria’s demand for
cement. With an ultimate goal to achieve a 26 million metric tonnes
annual production capacity in Nigeria by 2015, Dangote’s strategy
for growth is to look to the future, use high technology, integrate
along the value chain and go for large scale. To facilitate its ambitious
expansion plans, Dangote Group has contracted SINOMA, China; for
EPC execution of the new cement plants. The new cement projects in
progress in Nigeria include :
Place Production Capacity Commissioning

Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, Apapa, Lagos
Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc ( DSR) commenced its operations in March 2000 as the
sugar division of Dangote Industries Limited. The Group initially entered sugar business
in 1978 through importation and trading of sugar and subsequently commenced
sugar production in 2000 by commissioning a port-based sugar refinery at Apapa
port in 2001. The sugar division was spun-off as Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc via a
scheme of arrangement in January 2006 which transferred all the assets, liabilities
and undertakings attributable to the sugar division of Dangote Industries Limited.
This modern refinery was designed and built by Tate & Lyle, UK with an initial production
capacity of 600,000 MT/annum of raw sugar. This was increased to 1.44 million MT/
annum in 2004, making it the Second Largest Sugar Refinery in the World.
The company’s operations comprise two key business areas : refining of raw sugar
imported from Brazil and marketing and distribution for direct consumption and
industrial needs. Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc produces and packages Vitamin A fortified
refined white sugar in 50kg bags for direct consumption under the brand name
‘’Dangote Sugar’’, as well as the unfortified white sugar for industrial uses.
In addition, DSR has finalized arrangement for the introduction of its retail packages.
The Dangote Sugar Vitamin A fortified refined sugar is now being packaged in 1 kg,
500 g and 250 g retail packages.
Future Plans
DSR’s strategic focus is the continued market expansion and growth in the Nigerian
market and sub-Saharan Africa, with export of the 50kg, and new 1kg, 500g and
250g Vitamin A refined fortified sugar.
The Company has drawn up plans for setting up a new sugar refinery in Algeria of 1.25
Million MT/Annum capacity. Also investment opportunities in a fully integrated Sugar
Refining company are being explored for the generation of raw materials for sugar
production, locally. Currently, discussions are at an advanced stage on the possibility
for DSR to invest in Savannah Sugar Company Limited, Numan Adamawa State.

Sugarcane Farming
Savannah Sugar Company Limited was established in 1975 by the Federal
Government of Nigeria as an integrated sugar company with capacity to produce
55,000 MT of white sugar from own grown sugar cane. The moribund company
in Adamawa State was acquired by Dangote Group in 2003 as a part of its
backward integration programme to produce Sugar in Nigeria by farming its
own sugar cane.
The Savannah Sugar Company’s vast farm of excellent flat land spread over
32,000 hectares, bountifully irrigated by the Kiri Dam on Gongola River which
provides required water by gravity along with the ideal climate of the North
Eastern Nigeria.
Adopting latest farming techniques, the Group has bought 20,000 hectares
farm of the factory under cultivation to produce 150,000 MT / Annum of raw
sugar. Experts’ services maximise the yield on par with the leading farms in the
World. Modern equipment and skilled labour at ever stage of farming right from
preparation of farm up to harvesting ensures the sugar mill’s productivity.
The farm’s crop cycle has a six years course composed of plant cane / 4 ratoons
with phased and systematic inclusion of new plots for farming.
In addition to the Company’s aggressive cultivation plans, community farming of
sugarcane is also encouraged offering logistic support to local farmers to partner
Nigeria’s self-reliance in sugarcane farming and sugar milling.
Future Plans
The Company has drawn up plans for the development of new lands and
redevelopment of old cane fields to produce high quality cane in the quantity
required to meet the cane demand of the rehabilitated and expanded mill.
Additional land of 20,000 hectares acquired. Capacity will be expanded to
400,000 TPA.

Mr. Aliko DangotePresident and CEODangote GroupUnion Marble House 1 Alfred Rewane RoadIkoyi, Lagos, Nigeria
Dear Mr. Dangote,
We cannot thank you enough for the Dangote Foundation’s contribution of US$2 million to the World Food Progamme’s ( WFP ) relief efforts in Pakistan. This donation sends a strong message to the world that the African private sector is a key player in the fight against global hunger.
I have just returned from Pakistan where people are facing the reality of having lost seeds, crops and their incomes leaving them vulnerable to hunger and homelessness. During my visit, I witnessed the courage of the Pakistani people first hand and can attest to their steadfast commitment to re-building their lives. With nearly 21 million people affected and six million of those requiring immediate assistance, the support from the Dangote Foundation will help WFP meet the urgent food and logistics needs of the flood survivors.
I hope to have the opportunity to personally thank you during the Clinton Global Initiative in New York later this month. None of our work would be possible without the compassion and generosity of companies and individuals like you. On behalf of WFP and the people of Pakistan, thank you.
Sincerely,
Josette Sheeran
