CARE OF TOP FABRIC

Proper care of the top materialwill reduce the possibility of waterstains, mildew, or shrinkage. Do notstack the top if it is damp. Alwaysuse the convertible top vinyl boot tokeep the top material clean, dry, andpositioned when the top is stacked.

The rear window slide fastenershould be lubricated at least once ayear with stainless stick lubricant.

Use the top compartment behindthe rear seat back only for storageof the top. The storage of otheritems not only interferes with theproper operation of the top, but mayalso damage or stain the top material.

The vinyl top may be washed eachtime the car is washed. Clean thematerial with FoMoCo Interior TrimCleaner and a scrub brush. Be sure

to rinse the top thoroughly withclean water during and after washing.

Do not use a cleaning materialthat is not recommended for vinylmaterial because damage to the topmay result.

The vinyl coating becomes tackyat approximately ISO.P. Therefore, when making paint repairs, be sureto protect the top material from heat.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING-POWER TOP

nect an ammeter in series in thecircuit. Operate the top controlswitch and note the ammeter read-ings. The current draw should be28 amperes maximum operating.Current in excess of 75 amperes in-dicates a frozen pump or cylinder ora mechanical obstruction. Low am-perage with the motor running andno top movement indicates a defec-tive pump or low fluid level in thereservoir.

Refer to Wiring Diagram ManualForm 7795P-66 for locations of wir-ing harnesses. Schematics are shownin Group 22 of this manual.

If the top cannot be lowered orraised satisfactorily, or if it fails tooperate at all, and the trouble is notreadily apparent, make the followingmechanical, electrical, and hydraulictests to find the cause of the trouble.Always check the battery beforemaking any of the following checks.

Table 1 shows symptoms and pos-sible causes of trouble. TOP CONTROL SWITCH

1. Disconnect the wiring harnessat the switch multiple connector lo-cated behind the instrument panel.

2. Connect one terminal of a testlamp to the black (feed) wire of thetop control switch, and ground the

ing the top at the header, check thealignment of the door and thequarter windows with the side railweatherstrips. Also check the topsag adjustment and toggle clamp ad-justment.

ELECTRICAL TESTSBATTERY CHARGE

The battery charge should bedetermined before making any elec-trical checks because a partially dis-charged battery will cause slow motorand pump operation.

CURRENT ORA WTo check the current draw in the

top operating circuit, disconnect theblack wire at the circuit breaker (lo-cated on the starter relay), and con-

MECHANICAL CHECKS1. If the action of the top is slow,

raise and lower it and look for bentor misaligned linkage.

Faulty hydraulic system operationcan be caused by lack of fluid, leaks, air in the system, obstructions orkinks in the hoses, or faulty oper-ation of the cylinder or the pump.

other lead. If the test lamp does notlight, there is an open or short cir-cuit between the battery and theswitch or a bad circuit breaker.

3. If there is voltage to the switch, connect a jumper wire between theblack (feed) wire and the red wire, and then between the black wireand the yellow wire. If the top motoroperates, the switch is faulty andmust be replaced.

CIRCUIT BREAKERIf there is no voltage at the top

control switch, connect a jumper wireacross the terminals of the circuitbreaker (located on the starter relay)and operate the switch. If the topmotor operates, the circuit breakeris faulty and must be replaced. Ifthere is no voltage at the circuitbreaker, check the black wire fromthe circuit breaker to the starterrelay.

switch-to-motor leads at the junctionblock near the motor. Connect a 12-volt test lamp between the yellowwire and a ground and check byoperating the top control switch toraise the top. Connect the test lampbetween the red wire and a ground, and check by operating the switch tolower the top. If the test lamp doesnot light in either case, the wirefrom the junction block to the switchis open or shorted.

MOTORCheck the operation of the motor

by connecting first one motor lead, and then the other, directly to thebattery positive terminal. If themotor operates in either case, butwill not operate when hooked intothe wiring harness, check the wiringharness again for short or open cir-cuits. If the motor will not workwhen hooked directly to the battery, check the black (ground) wire fromthe motor. If the motor still does notwork, it must be replaced.

FLUID LEVEL1. Remove the rear seat and raise

the top.2. Place absorbent cloths below

the filler plug.3. Remove the filler plug, and

check the fluid level. It should belevel with the bottom edge of thehole.

4. If the level is low, check thesystem for leakS, adding automatictransmission fluid Type A, Suffix Aas necessary.

LIFf CYLINDERRemove the rear seat and the

quarter trim panels, operate the topcontrol switch, and check the op-eration of the lift cylinders for thefollowing:

PART 18-3 - CONVERTIBLE TOP 18-21

If one piston rod moves slowerthan the other, the cylinder with theslower rod is defective and shouldbe replaced.

If the movement of the pistonrods are sluggish or uneven, checkthe hoses from the pump to the cyl-inders for kinks.

If both rods move slowly, or donot move at all, disassemble and re-pair the pump.

ADJUSTMENTS AND LIGHT REPAIRS

Before aligning the top, visuallydetermine if the trouble results fromtop misalignment and/ or windowmisalignment. It may be necessary toalign both the top and the windowsbecause of the relationship betweenthe two. Adjustments of the doorand quarter windows must bechecked and any necessary changesmade before making top adjustments. These windows must be fully closedto insure proper top adjustment.Door window and quarter windowadjustments are outlined in Part 17-3.

and rotate hook item J in or out.Tighten the set screw item H (viewE).

5. If interference is encounteredbetween the top cloth and top of thedoor glass frame when the door isopened, the No.2 bow and/or No.3 bow can be adjusted by looseningthe nuts items K and L and raisingthe bows. After the adjustment, tighten the nuts items K and L(views F and G).

6. To maintain the correct designrelationship between rails and glass, the set screw item W must be backedout (view A).

7. Operate the folding top assem-bly one complete cycle and recheckthe alignment as indicated in stepsI through 7.

8. With the top assembly in thedown position, locate the strikersitem M on the rail-folding top centerside, opposite the clamp assemblyitem N. Secure the striker to therail. Loosen two screws item P andadjust the clamp assembly up ordown to insure proper hold-downeffort on the striker. After adjust-ment, tighten screws item P (viewL).

MUSTANG TOP ADJUSTMENTSSIDE RAIL WEATHERSTRIPSADJUSTMENT

The rear and center side railweatherstrips are adjustable fore andaft to provide a good seal at the breakjoints. The front weatherstrip is notadjustable.

1. Lock the top assembly to thewindshield header.

2. Trim the rear edge of the fronttop side rail weatherstrip flush withthe rear end of the front side rail toobtain a water tight seal at point X(Fig. 2).

3. Adjust the rear side rail weath-erstrip to provide a water tight sealat the joint (Fig. 2), and tighten theweatherstrip retaining nuts.

LATERAL ADJUSTMENTThis adjustment shifts the top as-

sembly sidewise to obtain a good fitbetween the rear side rail and thequarter outside rear side belt mould-inlZ.

COMET, FAIRLANE TOPADJUSTMENTS

Refer to Fig. 1 for the followingComet and Fairlane top adjustments:

1. Loosen screw and washer as-semblies item A and adjust thebracket item B (part of top Assem-bly), inboard or outboard to obtainthe 0.30-inch clearance dimensionbetween the rear side rail and beltside moulding. The bracket must beadjusted and secured in the verticalposition. Tighten the screw andwasher assemblies (views Hand J).

2. Loosen nut item C and rotatecam pin item D to obtain the 0.50-inch parallel dimension between therails and door glass and betweenthe rear rail and quarter glass. Thecam pin must not be rotated morethan 90° either side of the mean ad-justment mark on the rail. Hold thecam pin item D and tighten the nutitem C (views C and K).

If the dowel item E does not lineup with the sun visor bracket dowelhole on a fore and aft line, the topcloth is to be removed from the No.I bow. Loosen two screws, item Fand adjust the No.1 bow fore oraft to position the dowel. Tightenthe screws, item F. The top cloth isthen retacked and cemented (viewsB and D).

3. Loosen the nut item G andadjust the dowel item E inboard oroutboard to center the dowel intothe sun visor bracket dowel hole.Tighten nut item G (view E).

4. Maintain a proper design rela-tionship between the No.1 bow andthe header, loosen set screw item H

1. Loosen the screws which retainthe main pivot bracket to its support(Fig. 3).

2. Shift the main pivot brackettoward either side as necessary toobtain the proper clearance (%2inch) between the rear side rail andthe quarter outside rear side beltmouldings and tighten the retainingscrews.

INTERMEDIATE SIDE RAILADJUSTMENT

This adjustment moves the top as.sembly to obtain a good fit betweenthe top assembly and the side windowglass line.

1. With the door glass properlyadjusted, loosen the eccentric nut(View B, Fig. 4), and rotate theeccentric pin to obtain a 318 -inchparallel dimension between the frontdoor glass and the front and centerside rails.

2. Hold the eccentric pin to pre-vent it from turning, and tighten theeccentric nut. The main balance linkmarking and washer pointer is anaverage dimension of adjustment.Rotation of the eccentric will raise orlower the side rails to obtain the cor-rect design-height dimension betweenthe side rails and the glass.

BALANCE LINK ADJUSTMENTThe balance link is retained to the

intermediate side rail assembly withan eccentric pin (Fig. 4, View B).Rotation of the eccentric pin raisesor lowers the side rail over the doorglass area. Clearance between theglass frame and side rail is % inchconstant.

TOGGLE CLAMP ADJUSTMENTThe toggle clamps that hold the

No. I bow against the header can beadjusted to provide a good seal.

1. To determine which side is notsealing, check the weatherstrip be-tween the No. I bow and the headerwith a 3 x 5-inch card. A reasonablepull must be felt as the card is pulledout. Both toggle clamps need not beadjusted unless necessary.

2. Release the toggle clamps (Fig.5), loosen the Allen screw, andthread the to~~le hook in or out until
