Mother’s Day is one of the most popular days to visit GFS. In order to prevent overcrowding and ensure that our guests on this special day have an enjoyable visit, Mother’s Day is a ticketed event. Tickets for this day are $20 per person and are available for sale online only. Visit groundsforsculpture.org for more information and to purchase tickets. Members and children (5 and under) will receive free admission, but will require an online reservation to visit the park that day. Guest passes will not be accepted for entry on Mother’s Day.

THE MUSEUM SHOP

Nestled in the heart of central New Jersey lies Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), where art and nature are always at play. At its core are more than 270 sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each thoughtfully sited on landscaped parkland full of exotic trees and flowers. The works, many of them monumental, include those of such distinguished artists as Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, George Segal, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Isaac Witkin.

They join the enchanting works of our visionary founder Seward Johnson and many others by the finest up and coming artists of our time. Join us and discover the beauty, charm, whimsy, and inspiration that our 42 acres hold.

EXHIBITIONSBOAZ VAADIA: SCULPTURE MAY 1 – SEPTEMBER 18, 2016

Boaz Vaadia: Sculpture will feature the work of the Israeli-born New York artist who creates figurative compositions by stacking layers of sedimentary stone, capturing in the artist’s words the “pause in the movement.” With more than 100 sculptures on display in the Museum, Domestic Arts Building Mezzanine, and outdoors, this exhibition will encompass the depth of Vaadia’s works, including some rarely seen early works and some recent sculptures cast in bronze.

PAUL HENRY RAMIREZ: RATTLE FEBRUARY 27, 2016 – JANUARY 8, 2017

The West Gallery will feature RATTLE, a site-specific installation created by Paul Henry Ramirez. Through layers of direct painting, applied canvases, sound, and other elements Ramirez will transform the gallery into a whimsical fantasy of color and energy, playing with and against the architecture of the space, creating a sculpted environment where the viewer experiences the installation on multiple sensory levels.

NIKKI ROSATO: INBOUND MAY 1 – SEPTEMBER 18, 2016

This season, the Domestic Arts Building lower level features two exhibitions—Ayami Aoyama: Silence and Nikki Rosato: Inbound. Aoyama is a NJ-based artist who works with stone, embracing the spiritual nature of the material as she carves sculpture that is connected to the natural world. Sponsored in part by the Brooke Barrie Art Fund

In Inbound, Nikki Rosato creates figurative works using road maps, cutting away all the land masses, leaving linear forms created from the leftover roads and waterways as a metaphor for personal connections and experiences. Rosato’s use of volumetric negative space forms a spatial counterpoint to the fluid solidity of Ayami Aoyama’s Silence.

INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH: A BIG READ MURAL PROJECT MAY 13 – JULY 10

This spring, as part of a National Endow-ment for the Arts funded Big Read project centered on the book Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea, GFS and the Hamilton Township Public Schools partnered to engage students across grade levels in a project that brought literature and the visual arts together. Come view the mural created by these students and teaching artist Karina Raude, and witness a celebration and exploration of the history of Latin American muralism, and themes including identity, family, and community.

COMBAT PAPER PROJECT AUGUST 13 – OCTOBER 2

This exhibition features powerful works on paper created at workshops organized by Combat Paper NJ, an organization which helps veterans express their complex experiences through art-making and the language of papermaking. Combat Paper NJ’s goal is to build and strengthen the veteran and non-veteran community by changing the culture of the “silent veteran,” transforming the veteran into a storyteller, the non-veteran into a witness.

A rare opportunity to see the dramatic process of Raku firing ceramics! Watch as local artist Nancy Tamasi demonstrates this fascinating process, featuring ceramics created during our Art Boot Camp workshop (see page 13 to register for Boot Camp). An amateur naturalist, she draws inspiration from nature and uses mostly sustainable and environmentally friendly materials in her pieces. Born in Israel in 1951, Boaz Vaadia is an internationally known sculptor who works primarily in stone and bronze. Vaadia moved to New York in 1975 and his studio is located in Williamsburg Brooklyn. His work is sited in various public locations, such as the Time Warner Center, New York City, and included in many museums and private collections throughout the world, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, and the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco. Vaadia exhibits widely in galleries nationally and abroad.

STRONG-CUEVAS THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 11am–2pm$60 MEMBERS; $75 NON-MEMBERSA limited number of Strong-Cuevas’ new book, Strong-Cuevas Sculpture: Premonitions in Retrospect, will be available for purchase and signing.

Born in France, Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas began at the Art Students’ League in 1963 working in sculpture with renowned teacher John Hovannes. As her themes took shape, she modeled in wax and in plaster for large pieces, which allowed for greater freedom of form. She grew up knowing Salvador Dali, a friend of her parents. In New York, she rubbed elbows with luminaries like Andy Warhol. She has exhibited in numerous solo shows across New York and Connecticut. Says Strong-Cuevas, “Communication through space and time, the exploration of outer space and inner consciousness are my themes. I like to experiment, considering myself an innovator within a classical tradition.”

Quill Teal-Sullivan, Meadowburn Farm’s garden manager, will discuss the gardens’ rich history as well as the challenges and triumphs of their preservation. Teal-Sullivan will focus on the discoveries made during the restoration process of the gardens built at the turn of the 20th century by Helena Rutherfurd Ely. Ely, a pioneering figure in American horticulture and author of three widely influential books on practical horticulture, was also a founding member of the Garden Club of America.

Charles Cresson is a garden designer, consultant, photographer, author, avid gardener, and bulb guru who will provide you with valuable information to enhance your garden. No need to forsake spectacular bulb displays because of deer. Many bulbs are surprisingly unpalatable to deer. With careful selection you can stretch the bloom season from late winter through spring and even into autumn. Most of these varieties are suitable for intimate garden spaces while many can also be naturalized for grand landscape impact.

This exciting fused glass workshop covers the basics of fusing and slumping, and allows each participant to create their own 6” x 12” work of art. Students can utilize layering and stacking techniques to create visual depth within their project. Completed designs can be functional works of art, or slumped into a three-dimensional shape to create a standalone art piece. Projects will be fired following the workshop by the instructor and available for pickup beginning June 21st. Instructor: Leanne Purkis.

Learn abstract stone carving from world-renowned artist Ayami Aoyama, whose works are currently on exhibit. You’ll work with a 35-pound piece of limestone and a variety of carving tools to create your abstract sculpture. No prior stone carving experience needed – fundamental stone carving techniques to be covered include chiseling, filing, sanding, and polishing. Join Michael S. Miller of Visions Photographic Workshops for a photowalk. Miller will guide your journey, working on composition, perspective, and externalizing your mind’s eye. Time will be spent in the field and in the classroom reviewing and critiquing your images. Photowalk will take place outdoors so please dress appropriately. PAINTING THE FIGURESATURDAYS, AUGUST 6, 13, 20, 27, 10:30-3:30pm$215 MEMBERS; $235 NON-MEMBERS

This season the theme of the human figure is woven through many of our exhibitions. Explore the human form in detail through this unique workshop where you will be painting from a live, nude model holding a sustained pose using oils or acrylics. This workshop will include guidance in painting techniques including value, color, palette, volume of form, and overall development of the figure. Students will complete one or two canvases per week. A materials list will be provided at time of registration. Instructor: Joe Gyurcsak.

WEEK 1: BEYOND THE CANVAS WITH BAS-RELIEF SCULPTUREJULY 11-15, 10am-4pm

Unleash your imagination by exploring the intersection of two-dimensions and three-dimensions in the creation of two bas-relief sculptures. Develop two original designs, transfer each design to a 30” by 30” canvas, and apply multiple layers of plaster bandage to create depth and dimension in the compositions. Additional design elements will be attached, allowing your artwork to truly go beyond the boundaries of the canvases. Completed works can easily be framed and displayed on wall. WEEK 2: ART OF BONSAIJULY 18-22, 10am-4pm

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind workshop exploring bonsai, ornamental trees grown in containers. In the beautiful setting of GFS, grow and style bonsai with master bonsai artist Chase Rosade and assistant Solita Rosade, President of the North American Bonsai Federation. Each day includes discussion, demonstration, and hands-on practice. At the conclusion, you will have a completed bonsai tree and the foundation for continuing to practice bonsai. Ideal for beginner and intermediate students. Workshop cost includes the bonsai specimen you will create, a container, soil, wire, and use of all tools necessary during class. WEEK 3: CLAY SPEARS& FIREJULY 25 – 29, 10am-4pm

Create your own hand-built ceramics inspired by ceramic sculptures created by Toshiko Takaezu, world-renowned artist with work on display at GFS. Utilize closed pottery techniques to build unique vertical vessels. Vessels will be prepared for Raku firing, a 16th century Japanese technique in which the ceramic piece is removed from the kiln before it is cooled, resulting in a vibrant iridescent surface. Raku firing will take place August 6th at 1pm (see page 6 for more info). Students may choose to glaze their pieces on August 6th between 10am-12pm. Any vessels left unglazed will be fired as is. Ayami Aoyama is an artist who looks to the materials she works with for her sculptural ideas. “Sha’ar” is the Hebrew word for “gate.” The musical project Sha’ar was conceived as a gateway to understanding the multicultural influences on Israeli society through an exploration of the life and music of the late Israeli composer, Yedidia Admon. Sha’ar’s group members bring their own mix of cultures (Israeli, Argentine, and American) and distinct musical identities to Admon’s music, adding electric instrumentation and updated arrangements that give Admon’s music a contemporary spin.
