Grounded in Faith, Growing to Serve

THE PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace to you and peace. “The moment has come to commit all of the Church's energies to a new evangelization . . . No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church, can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.” These are the words of Pope Saint John Paul II in his encyclical letter Redemptoris Missio. As a parish family, we want to keep our conversation about the New Evangelization alive, exploring the many ways in which we can together “proclaim Christ to all peoples” by radiating the joy of the Gospel from Menlo Park. St. Raymond aspires to be a center of evangelization in the Archdiocese of San Francisco that takes advantage of the global reach of Silicon Valley to win minds and hearts for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What is the New Evangelization? It’s a novel type of mission work, directed toward historically Christian countries and people who have heard the Gospel, but have not fully responded to it. We live in such a country; we live among such people. The New Evangelization seeks to arrest and reverse alienation from the Word—that is, Jesus Christ proclaimed—and to do it while the Church is still able to strike a responsive chord. How are we going to do this? The Church must struggle. And by “the Church,” I don’t mean someone out there, bishops and priests, the Pope and theologians. I mean them together with us here. I mean all of us and each of us must struggle to make the New Evangelization real. We must struggle against our fear of being identified as Christians in a culture that’s increasingly hostile to the Faith. We must struggle against our complacent acceptance of vague spirituality rather than the robust religion of disciples of Jesus. We must struggle against the tendency to keep to ourselves and our friends rather than reaching out to the strangers among us. Saint John Paul spoke the following words to young men and women, but they apply to all of us: “Do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns, and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel. It is the time to preach it from the rooftops. Do not be afraid to break out of the comfortable and routine modes of living in order to take up the challenge of making Christ known. It is you who must ‘go out into the byroads’ and invite everyone you meet to the banquet which God has prepared for His people.” Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord! Fr. Christopher, O.P.

Mission Appeal Weekend: June 4/5, 2016 Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa (IHSA)

On the weekend of June 4/5, 2016 Sister Benedicta Wasonga of the Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa (IHSA), will come to our parish to share her mission experience with us. The IHSA community was founded in 1955 in Tanzania, East Africa, to help in the conversion of Africa through mission works that the congregation undertakes according to the needs of the time.

Following the footsteps of Jesus, who was a healer, preacher, educator, and all other good works, the sisters’ ministries improve both spiritual and physical needs of the people. Some of their ministries include the following:

Faith formation- in parishes, villages, and schools. Children - orphans, disabled, and disadvantaged. Health Care - in hospitals, clinics, rural areas, and

maternal and child health. Education - teaching from pre-school to colleges. Social Work /Community Development - working

with families, refugees, youth, and women. Finance and Administration

Please keep the sisters in your prayers for the success of their mission works. We will have a second collection to support the mission work of the sisters in Tanzania, Africa.

Join the Team for

Our Annual Fall Family

Picnic This year, we’re looking for a new chairperson for our annual Fall Family Picnic team, as Christine Augulis is retiring from the post after 3 years. She has detailed notes & contacts to guide & assist in planning the event; we just need an energetic group to make this great get-together happen next September. But we’ve got to start organizing & recruiting now before everyone leaves for vacation! Grab some friends & leave your contact info with Ronnica in the parish office at 650-323-1755 or [email protected] if you’re interested in organizing this super fun event for our parish. Thanks!

Due to the Memorial Day weekend, the May 29th collection will be reported next week.

Choir practice is cancelled for the summer. Watch for

the date we resume in August!

HOMELESS FAMILY FUND

This Week’s Readings 1 Kings 17:17-24 Psalm 30:2, 4-6, 11-13 Galatians 1:11-19 Luke 7:11-17

The Confraternity of the Holy Rosary is a group of men and women throughout the Catholic Church who are devoted to the prayer of the Rosary. Whether individually or in groups, they pray the rosary three times a week, contemplating the life of Christ. United with

Mary, they unite their prayers to members of the Confraternity past and present, and are granted a number of indulgences and benefits for their membership. http://www.rosary-center.org/nroscon.htm

A Haven Family House Case Manager who works mostly with veterans requested our assistance for her client, a 35 year old married veteran and his wife and five children. They had been living with his parents, but when the house was sold, they had no place to go. The seven of them lived in their car for one month and then moved to the shelter where they had been for 2-1/2 months. They found a 4-bedroom house to rent for $3,800 per month. Supportive Services for Veteran's Families will pay $3,200 and he can afford the remaining $600 per month. They needed $6,170 for rent and security deposit. He had saved $1,000, SSVF gave him $3,600 and we were pleased (especially this close to Memorial Day) to be able to provide the remaining $1,570 needed in order for them to be able to move. He had worked at the SF Airport for TSA for three years, but now is working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Mills Peninsula Hospital. He is currently only working part time earning $2,100 per month, but hopes he will be able to work full time in the near future. They receive $300 per month in food stamps. Their Case Manager has helped them devise a budget and savings program. They were very appreciative of our assistance. Thank you to all our parishioners for alleviating this family's burdens. "Blessed be the Lord, day by day, God, our salvation who bears our burdens."

-Psalm 68:20

Please make your donations payable to St. Raymond Homeless Family Fund. They may be placed in the collection basket, sent to the parish office or through the St. Raymond website (e-contributions).

Next Week’s Readings 2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13 Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 7, 11 Galatians 2:16, 19-21 Luke 7:36-8:3

Meditation on Today’s Readings

Today Elijah says to the widow of Zarephath, “Give me your son.” Give me your grief, your loss, your guilt. Three times Elijah calls on the Lord to raise her dead son to life, and God raises him up. Elijah gives him to his mother, and her weeping turns to rejoicing.

As wonderful as this is, it’s just a hint of the great gift Jesus brings each of us in his death and resurrection. When like the widow we have lost everything, when there’s no hope and no help, Jesus steps forward, moved with pity. He touches the coffin that holds all our loss, all our grief, and asks us not to weep. He raises up the young man and gives him to his mother.

This is the Paschal mystery. Our mourning somehow turns to dancing in the great compassion of Christ. Like the widow, we offer all our sorrow and guilt and grief to the Lord, and he gives us back all we have lost, in ways we can never imagine, in the greatness of his love.

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The Sacred Scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given us.

The Dominican

Corner On Wednesday, June 8th, we will celebrate the memorial

of Bl. Diana and Cecilia. "Bl. Diana (+ 1236) and Bl. Cecilia (ca. 1200 – ca. 1290) play a very important part in the history of the Dominican nuns. Part of the founding process of the monastery of Dominican nuns in Bologna, they both had connections to Holy Father Dominic and to his successor, Bl. Jordan of Saxony. Both Bl. Diana, in Bologna, and Bl. Cecilia, in Rome, were drawn to the Dominican monastic life by St. Dominic himself and furthered

in their vocations by Bl. Jordan. St. Dominic’s example and zeal for the salvation of souls inspired them to take up a life of prayer, penance, and silence to support the preaching mission of the Dominican friars. Bl. Diana made vows in his hands, and Bl. Cecilia was the first to throw herself at his feet when he was asked by the Pope to take care of the nuns in several Roman monasteries. Yet, it was through the guidance of Bl. Jordan that these two Dominican nuns were drawn together. After years of living outside of a Dominican monastery, Bl. Diana was given the habit and admitted to profession by Bl. Jordan in 1223. Soon after, Bl. Jordan asked Bl. Cecilia to come from Rome to help form the new community of nuns in Bologna. She was installed as the first prioress there. Moreover, both of these nuns help bring out characteristic features of the first two Masters of the Order. Bl. Cecilia gives us the account of St. Dominic’s physical appearance and one of the earliest accounts of his miracles. Bl. Diana kept the letters that Bl. Jordan wrote her, thus giving us a sense of his personality and insight into his care over the Order."

-From opeast.org On Friday, June 10th we celebrate another Dominican blessed. "John Dominic met St. Catherine of Siena when he was young, entered the Order of Preachers, and was an integral part of a major reform movement. This reform helped to revitalize the Order after its decimation by the plague and general laxity of observance. Not only was he a major force in the Dominican Order, but he became a cardinal in the Church, and an official legate for the Pope. Most importantly, he worked to resolve the Great Western Schism. He also brought Fra Angelico, the world famous painter, and St. Antoninus, a brilliant theologian and reformer, into the Order."
