GROUND-WATER LEVELS IN THE UNITED STATES 1972-74

NORTH-CENTRAL STATES

INTRODUCTION

Publication of ground-water level data for the United States in water-supply papers was begun by the Geological Survey in 1935. From 1935 through 1939, a single water-supply paper for each year covering the entire nation was issued (Water-Supply Papers 777, 817, 840, 845, and 886). Since then water-supply papers have been issued covering 6 separate sections of the United States as shown in figure 1. See table on page 2 for the number of the water-supply paper containing records by year and section. ^

Beginning in 1956, only water-level data from a basic network of observation wells have been published. This basic network contains observation wells so located that the most significant data are obtained from the fewest wells in the most important aquifers. In some States the basic network forms the skeletal index of a more comprehensive observation-well program. Publications that contain substantial additional water-level data are listed at the end of each State report in this volume.

Each well is identified by (1) a 15-digit number based on latitude and longitude, and (2) a local number that is provided for continuity with older reports and for other use as dictated by local needs. The first 6 digits of the 15-digit number are degrees, minutes, and seconds of north latitude; the next 7 digits are degrees (including a leading zero for those less than 100), minutes, and seconds of west longitude; and the final 2 digits are sequential numbers assigned in the order in which the wells (or other hydrologic sites) are established in that 1-second quadrangle. This system provides both the geographic location and a unique number for each well.

Measurements are made in many types of wells, under varying conditions of access and at different temperatures, hence, neither the method of measurement nor the equipment can be standardized. At each observation well, however, the equipment and techniques used are those that will insure that measurements at each well are consistent.

Water-level measurements in this report are given in feet with reference to either mean sea level (msl) or land-surface datum (Isd). Mean sea level is the datum plane on which the national network of precise levels is based; land-surface datum is a datum plane that is approximately at land surface at each well. If known, the altitude of the land-surface datum above mean sea level is given in the well description. The height of the measuring point (MP) above or below land-surface datum is given in each well description. Water levels in wells equipped with recording gages are reported for every fifth day and the end of each month (eom).

In the well description, dimensions are given inInternational System Units (SI) as well as in English units. Thefactor 0.3048 is used to convert feet to meters; the factor 2.54

is used to convert inches to centimeters; and the factor 1.609 is used to convert miles to kilometers.

Water levels are reported to as many significant figures as can be justified by the local conditions. For example, in a measurement of a depth to water of several hundred feet, the error in determining the absolute value of the total depth to water may be a few tenths of a foot, whereas the error in determining the net change of water level between successive

hundredth or a few hundredths of a water the accuracy is greater,

reported to a hundredth of a a tenth of a foot or a larger

measurements may be only a foot. For lesser depths to Accordingly, most measurements are foot, but some are given only to unit.

Measurements were made by the Water Resources Division the Geological Survey under the direction of personnel listed the preface.

Wells are numbered according to their latltule and longitude location, as explained on page 1. Lo"al well numbers are also given.

The local well numbers are in accordance with the Bureau of Land Management's system of land subdivision. Eacn well number is made up of three segments. The first segment indicates the township, the second the range, and the third the section in which the well is situated. The letters after the sectiDn number, which are assigned in a counter-clockwise direction (beginning with "a" in the northeast quarter), represent subdivisions of the section. The first letter de notes the 160-acre tract, the second the l)0-acre tract, and the third the 10-acre tract. Numbers are added as suffixes to distinguish wells in the same tract. Thus, the number 75-30-17bcb des ignates the well in the riiftiSWyjW'!, sec. 17, T.75 N., R.30 W.

The observation-well program In Kansas was continued during 1972 through 1974 in cooperation with the Kansas Geological Survey, the Division of Water Resources of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture, and the Division of Environmental Health of the Kansas Department of Health and Envi ronment. In addition, the City of Wichita cooperated in Harvey, HePherson, and Sedgwick Counties. Figure 1< shows the location of observation wells included in this report.

. numbered locally either serially within counties or in accordance with the Bur_.. _. Land Management's system of land subdivision. By the latter method each well number is made up of three segments. The fiist segment indicates the township, the second the range, and the third the section in which the well is situated. Townships are numbered south from the north border of the State. Ranges are numbered east or west of the Sixth Principal Meridian, which is a line on the east side of Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth, and Rice Counties. The letters after the section number, which are assigned in a counter-clockwise direction beginning with "a" in the northeast quadrant, represent subdivisions of the section. Wells are nuirbered according to their latitude-longitude location, i Local well numbers are also given.

The local well lumbers are in accordance with the Bureau of Land Management's systen of land subdivision. Eaen well number is made up of three segments. The first segment indicates the township, the second the range, and the third the section in which the well is situated. The letters after the section number, which are assigned in a counter-clockwise direction (beginning with the letter "a" in the northeast quarter), represent subdivisions of the section; the first letter denotes the iDO-acre tract, the second the 10-acre tract, and the third the 10-acre tract. lumbers are added as suffixes to distinguish wells in the same tract. Thus, tne number 103.30.Qadd designates the well in the SE^SEyjE'; sec.9, T.108 N., R.30 W.

n-well program in Nebraska was continued in 1972 through 1974 in and Survey Division, University of Nebraska. Figure 6 shows the ncluded in this report.

Well-Numbering System

Local well numbers are also given. The local well numbers are based on the land subdivisions within the U.S. Bureau of Land Manage

ment's survey of Nebraska. The numeral preceding the N (north) indicates the township, the numeral preceding the E (east) or W (west) indicates the range, and the numeral preceding the terminal letters indicates the section in which the well is located. The terminal letters A, B, C, and D Indicate the well's location within the section. The first letter denotes the quarter section or l60-acre tract and the second the quarter-quarter or 40-acre tract; they are assigned in a counter clockwise direction, beginning in the northeast corner of each tract. Thus, a well in Adams County in the NwyjEH sec. 23, T.7 N., R.10 W. would be assigned the number 7N-10W-23AB. When additional wells are located in the same 4o-acre tract, they are distinguished by appending a sequential digit to the well number. Thus, a second well in the NWsNE^ sec. 23, T.7 N., R.10 W. would be assigned the number 7N-10W-23AB2.

Local well numbers are also given. The local well numbers are in accordance with the Bureau of Land Management's system of land

subdivision. Each well number is made up of three segments. The first segment indicates the township, the second the range, and the third the section in which the well is located. The letters after the section number, which are assigned in a counter-clockwise direction, represent subdivisions of the section. The first letter denotes the 160-acre tract, the second the 40-acre tract, and the third the 10-acre tract. Numbers are added as suffixes to distinguish wells in the same tract. Thus, the number I4o-6l-lbdcc designates the well in the SWuEVftSE's sec. 16, T.lltO H.. R.lb W.

The observation-well program in South Dakota was continued in 1972 through 197!) in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Natural Resource Development (formerly State Water Resources Commission). Water-level measurements since 1968 have been a joint Federal-State program. Water- level measurements not included herein are on file in the Basic Data Section, District office, Water Resources Division, Tl.S. Geological Survey, Huron, South Dalota. Figure 8 shows the location of observation wells included in this report.

Wells are numbered according to their latitude ai Local well numbers ar^ also given.

The local well numbers are in accordance with the Bureau of Land Management's system of land subdivision. Each well number is made up of three segments separated by a N (S) and W (E). The first segment indicates the township North (South), the second the range West (East), and the third the section in which the well is situated. The letters after the section number, which are assign ed in a counter-clockwise direction, represent subdivisions of the section. The first letter de-
