The lens is still wet. Allow it to dry before adding more layers.

Applying the Mod Podge glue.

At left, a finished lens. At right, drilled out and painted silver.

Materials

• Mod Podge decoupage glue (clear gloss formula)

• Mini drill or Dremel tool with bit assortment

• Paintbrush

Method

• You’ll need to think ahead. When you start the kit, find the lights and if they’re solid and you want to replace them with this technique, leave them on the sprue. The sprue will provide support for the drilling action.

• Use your drill with a bit that matches the size of the light housing. Err on the side of being small. It doesn’t need to be perfect and you want to avoid going through the light housing. If you use a powered drill, use a speed control. Round- or ball-shaped burr bits work best.

• Next, decide how the light will be installed on the model. If it’s easy to access, you can clip it off, clean it up and install it near the end of the build. If it’s behind guards or inaccessible, you may have to apply the liquid glass material early in order to fit the light in place.

• Paint the cavity you drilled out silver or metallic grey.

• The Mod Podge glue is acrylic and thins/cleans up with water. There are matte, satin, gloss and super gloss formulas. The gloss/super gloss is the recommended formula but you may want a different effect that the other formulas provide. It has to be applied in layers and allowed to dry in between. It will shrink slightly.

• When ready to apply the liquid, use a paintbrush to carefully drop the glue in place. You may have to prop the model upright until the glue dries. Reapply until you get the look you’re after.

• You can tint the glue with inks or food coloring if a color is desired. You could also tint one of the first layers but use it clear in subsequent layers. Experiment to see what works best for you.

• Mask off the lens with tape if you have to use the airbrush.

September meeting demo: Liquid glass replacement lenses by Victor Divittorio

Most modern kits come with hollow light fixtures and clear lenses but older kits often have solid light fixtures. Painting those accurately is a challenge that is next to impossible. However, if you want to dress up an older kit, there are simple techniques to emulate that three-dimensional look. Here are the notes from the demo.

Painting the Nike Ajax missile at VFW Post 10657The missile painting project is done! Many thanks to our chapter members and Boy Scouts that stepped up to help with the scraping, priming and painting. Richard Crane, our contact with the VFW Post, was very happy, which keeps us in good standing for meeting at the building each month for free. In 2019, we plan to schedule two Saturday work days for building/property projects.

The Zimmerit is a laser-cut paper accessory from Monroe Perdu Studios. The paper sections were removed easily and applied using a soaking of Tamiya Extra Thin cement. The fit is close to perfect but Shon used Mr. Dissolved Putty on a few edges to

make it blend better. Curved sections were first tacked down in a corner and when dry the remaining portion was conformed. The sheet has some alternate patterns and comes with extra material in case it’s needed.

The decals were added to depict a vehicle operating in the Golan Heights during the Six-Day War in 1967. The turret dust boot is made of a flexible styrene that softened some with Tamiya Extra Thin cement to allow it to conform to contours. The metal Masteclub tracks were treated with Wilder Quick Rust, which was painted on

for instant corrosion. The figures are from SabIngaMartin Publications. The separate hands needed some work to fit correctly. Skin tones were painted with acrylics and touched up with some artists’ oil paint. Weathering is done mostly with artists’ oil paints.

The markings were done by hand with tape masks and Micron pens. The glass lenses used Future floor finish with a bit of acrylic blue. Several applications were applied but in stages so that proceeding layers were dry before more was added. The weathering consists of paint chipping done with a

brush. Light spots were painted on and then dark spots within the light spots were painted in with Vallejo German Camouflage Black Brown. Paint chips were applied to the headlight cables and fenders. The Droid countermeasure device is from Legend.

To dress up the kit Brian bought a Hauler photo-etched brass detailing set and a foul weather cover from The Bodi. The junk rack is made from styrene. The spare tire hub

mounting bolts were drilled out and the headlights wired.

The kit is nice but it does have lots of flash on the parts. The searchlight generator was not included in the kit but Tabb found a resin one made by Blast Model. Unfortunately, the instructions are not that

clear so reference photos of the real thing were used to help.

Dragon Soviet SU-100

by Ashley Abernathy

in 1:72 scale

The kit includes many extra parts for other vehicles that were not needed for the SU-100. Although a basic photo-etched brass fret is included, Ashley bought a more comprehensive set from Hauler. The front fenders were cut off and the engine deck grills opened up. Welds were added on the bow and all new grab handles and tie downs were made from wire. Track cleat straps are

lead foil. The external fuel tanks are based on the kit parts, but have been sanded down and new lead foil straps and brass handles added. The front lamp was opened up and wired. The tow cable is twisted copper wire.
