Day1:ArriveWhitehorse,transfertothehotel(overnight)Your tripwill start fromWhitehorse,wherewewillputyouup for the firstnight ina comfortablemid-rangehotelafteryourlongflight(andnomatterwhereyoucomefrom,Whitehorseisalongway!).Wewillcollectyoufrom your flight into town (we can help advise on routings if you wish), and transfer you downtown You’llperhapshaveenoughtimetogetoutandexploresomeofthetown–dependingonyourarrivaltime–andintheevening,wewillhaveagroupmealsoeveryonewillgettoknoweachotherandgetreadyfortheadventureahead!Days2-8:CoachtransfertoAtlin,helicoptertotheNakina(7nights)Well,herewego!I’vebeenfortunatetoworkinsomeoftheworld’sgreatestlocationsforgrizzlybearsduringmycareer,butvery,veryfewcomeanywherenearmatchingthemajestyandexcitementoftheTakuRiverindeepestBritishColumbia.Gettingtothecampisjustasmuchpartoftheadventure!.ThismorningwedepartbysmallcoachtobeautifulAtlin….wheretheroadbasicallyends.AtlinisjustovertheborderfromtheYukoninBritishColumbia,andthedriveisincrediblyscenicontheway.FromhereweboardourhelicopterforthetransfertoourcampfardowntheTakuRiver. This is a fantastic journeyandone thatgives you the chance toview this amazingbear-filledlandscapelikeno-oneelse.Landingatthecamp,wewilldisembark,getoursafetybriefingdone…andgetouttostartlookingforandphotographingthosebears!Accessible only by helicopter, this incredible wilderness is far, far away from any casual bear watchers andmakesforsomeofthebestphotographythatIhaveeverexperienced.Itisnotoriouslydifficulttogetto,and,tobehonest,hasbeenajealouslyguardedsecretamongstprofessionalsformanyyears.Sopopularwasthistripfor2019,thatthegroupIhavebeenabletotakeinthatyearfilledimmediatelybeforeithadevenreachedthewebsite.Assuch,andbecausewearegoodfriendswiththelegendaryfilmnaturalhistorycameramanthatownsthe camp and bases himself there all season, we have been able to secure two slots for 2020, eachaccommodatingeightpersons.This isyourchancetocomeandjoinmeinoneofmymostfavouritebear locations,surroundedonlyby lushforestsand,ofcourse,yourfellowphotographersonthegroup.Wewilltakeoverthecampforthedurationofyour stay, so it really will be “home from home”. Fishing, swimming, grooming, walking, scratching playing,fighting bears….what more could you want?! If you’ve not seen the video, check out the“andyskillenphotography”facebookpageforaquickideaofwhatit’sliketobefacetofacewithamotherandhercub.This isacampthat iswelland truly inbear territory,andas suchweoftenhavemany furryvisitorsduringourstaypaddingthroughthesite,betweenthecabins.Our camp is located right on the river, in “bear central”. The forests and rivers around us are crawlingwithgrizzliesofall shapesandsizes,engaging inthefull rangeofursinebehaviour.Weoperate fromanumberofspecificviewingsitesuptheriver,wherethebearswillnotbealarmedbyourpresence,andbyhavingavarietyofoptionsatourdisposal,thepotentialfortrulyuniqueshotsisincredible.Thisisyourchancetotrythatwide-anglegrizzlyshotyou’vebeendreamingabout!Youwillbeoutallday,everyday,insearchofbearphotographicopportunities,andbecauseofthenatureofthecamp’slocationinthemiddleofbearterritory,weoftendon’tevenhavetomovetoexperiencesomebearbehaviour!
Ouraccommodationissafeandcomfortable,andeachcabinhasitsowndedicatedbathroomwithhotshowersandflushingtoilets.Inquiettimesandtheheatoftheday,ourlocationmeansit’seasytorestawhileinyourcabin,crack-onwithsome editing and have time for discussions and exercises on composition and context. We will look toexperimentwithshutterspeedsinparticular,especiallyasthesalmonswimclosetothecampinshallowwater.Therewill also be the chance for bald eagle photography, as well as some close upmacroworkwithin thesurroundingforest…allthetimeensuringwe’repoisedtograbthatothercameraassoonasthenextbearcomesintoviewatthecamp!Day9:LeavetheNakina,backtoWhitehorseAlas,wereachtheendofouradventurebymid-morningthehelicoptertransferswillcommencetotakeyououtof“Bear-vana”andbacktoAtlin.Theflightbackisjustasspectacular,sokeepthecamerahandy!,andonceyoureachthere,youwillbetransferredbacktoWhitehorse.Theaimistogeteveryonebackbyearlyafternoon,intimetoconnectwiththeflightsouttoVancouveratleast.Wesuggestbookingaflightbeyond4pmonthefinaldayifyou’replanningtoleaveWhitehorse,toallowforanyhold-ups.
