Briefs Government must be in a posi- tion to take legal action against those not making efficient use of land granted through the land restitution programme said KZN MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Cyril Xaba in Muden on Satur- day. The MEC and Department of Agricultural officials were at- tending a service delivery event in the area as part of a province wide campaign to promote the economic benefits of agriculture which Mr Xaba emphasised should be regard- ed as a business to empower the community economically through the efficient use of land. Mr Xaba said that it was worrying that even after so much money had been paid over the years in the land resti- tution programme still not much has been achieved by the beneficiaries. He suggested Government should be able to take legal action against the people who were not using the land efficiently –this should apply to those communities which had received productive farms but had been neglected and become non-productive As the campaign to make ag- riculture a viable business rather than a status symbol is gaining momentum, he reiter- ated that communities must be taught about the business side of agriculture which remained the catalyst in providing wide- spread employment opportu- nities in rural areas. “If you are given the land through land reform you must be well aware that you have to start a business. One cannot tolerate this form of failure by the land beneficiaries. They must be able to stand on their own and make some- thing of the land that has been given to them by the govern- ment. Failure to do so must lead to dire consequences,” said Xaba. The communities must meet the government half way not just expect to be given everything on a silver plate he said. There were opportunites in the market –for instance South African Breweries has ap- proached the Department of Agriculture to say that they re- quire 5 tons of yellow maize from the communities and co- operatives undertaking orga- nised farming. FutureLife management had also indicated that it required the community farmers to pro- duce about 3000 tons of white maize to use in the production of Future Life pap. Xaba said this opens up lucra- tive opportunities for emerg- ing farmers to own these pro- jects and fully utilise the land at their custody. The communities must meet the government half way not just expect to be given every- thing on a silver plate he said. The Department was aware that many of the people in the area did not have water or ac- cess to markets –to ensure de- velopment the MEC said they needed to sit down with the people concerned to identify areas of focus and this would be done in the future. SIR,The Greytown Gazette dated 19 Novem-ber 2014 “No mayor but a 4L V6 DoubleCab” refers.(1)Yes, thiscouncillor isconfused, butnotfooled. Council has a vehicle which theyknow to be a “gas guzzler”, they have anopportunity to replace itwith amore eco-nomical vehicle but they do not. He is notfooled because he knows that an insur-ance companywill only pay out the valueof this two year old vehicle, less excess. The municipality can then purchase anyvehicle as a replacement. This councillorshould be confused, together with rate-payers and residents, who are angeredat theblatantwasteofratepayers’money. This is evident by the hundreds of signa-turesonapetitionsent to themunicipalityin this regard and they must take note ofthese concerns.

(2) The matter with regards to the elec-tion posters was raised by me with themunicipalmanager and administrator inJune, August and again in the beginningof November. The email from the admin-istrator informing the MM to instruct theengineers department to remove the

posters was sent by him on 6 Novemberand todate, theseposters are still up. Thequestion is, did theMM issue the instruc-tionand ifhedid, whyhas this simple tasknot been carried out?

AS residents of Umvoti, we areoften reminded through thepress of the serious levels of intimidation and violence in ourmidst, which is often directed atthe most vulnerable members ofour community.

Many marginalized community members suffer at the handsof perpetrators who are oftenfrom within their own family orclose community, and there appears to be no one to turn to forhelp in escaping from their situation.

Although the majority of people who suffer from violencewithin the home are women andchildren, this is not always thecase and the stigma associatedwith domestic violence of anykind can often prevent familymembers from coming forward.

Although this country has aconstitution which provides withequal rights for all, it is the accessing of those rights whichproves the challenge.

Within our community, thereare many stakeholders who areresponsible for ensuring the safety of marginalized or vulnerablegroups and ensuring access toservices designed to assist them.

It is not, however, only the responsibility of government toeradicate violence against ourcitizens in the community, but al

Stop theviolence,break thesilence

so that of the individual and civil societyorganisations such asthe Umvoti AIDS Centre, which recentlylaunched a new campaign against genderbased violence.

It is often the casethat victims of suchabuse are not onlyunaware of theirrights, but also do notknow where to turnfor confidential helpin accessing justiceand protection.

All of us have aduty to protect ourselves and our families from violence andif you are affected inany way by this within your home or community, you couldmake a confidentialcall to one of our caseworkers who can advise you on who toturn to, where to go,and what the rightsof the victim are insuch circumstances.

Our staff can helpyou to put forward acase and take youthrough what can bean intimidating process, directing you tothe people who canhelp you the most, ensuring that yourpersonal safety issafeguarded andthat you have full access to the functionsof the government.

Please phone Nkosiat 071 384 1441, Bhekiat 060 849 4292 orThobekile at 081 8126036 to talk about asituation which affects you or to set upa confidential meeting to discuss optionsopen to you or another victim of abuse.

Greytown FeedingProject fun walk

DURING the course of the fourth term, the primaryschool scholars were challenged to a reading contest our very own ‘readathon’.

The aim was for each class to read as many booksas possible, the books being recorded by the class teachers. As a result, the primary school scholars read 233books altogether. Well done to each and every childthat took up this challenge and enjoyed getting intothe fantasy world of a book.

In Grade four, ErikaAnne Edwards and Linique Alexander read 43 and 38 books respectively, for which theyreceived special prizes (a book each, obviously) andwe hope that they will carry on reading with such enthusiasm. Each participating scholar received a certificate.

The Grade 12’s finish writing their National Senior

Certificate examinations this week, and we wish themall the very best as they take a break before embarkingon the next exciting adventure starting life in the ‘bigworld’. We also wish the Grade nine and 11 scholars anamazing time on their respective camps, and the Geography scholars a good learning experience on their tour.

Over the weekend, the ornithologists will be participating in the annual Birding Big Day before the Adventservice on Sunday at 10am, where the school choirswill be singing during the service.

We all look forward to the awards ceremonies onMonday (primary school) and Tuesday (high school)next week, which will mark the end of the school yearand honour the many and varied achievements of ourscholars.
