INT. MEREDITH'S ROOM - DAY

Clad in her pajamas, Meredith sits in her closet, amidst ofpile of clothes and an open cardboard box. She sifts throughthe pile, making faces at the old and often hideous clothesshe picks out and piles into the box.

MEREDITH (V.O.)Spring cleaning. For some reason,spring is the time weve designated

to clean up. For some, spring islike New Years: Revisited. Itsthe time we choose to finally, andbegrudgingly, get rid of all of ourjunk, all of the unnecessary stuffthat has inevitably piled up. Maybeits something to do with all thesunshine. Makes us want to feel...lighter.

MEREDITH (CONTD)(curious)

What did you do?

Derek appears from the bathroom, a toothbrush full of foamytoothpaste protruding from his mouth.

DEREKWhat?

MEREDITHWhen you left New York, what didyou do? With all your stuff?

Derek spits out the foam and looks up at his reflection,

dreading the question so early in the morning.MEREDITH (CONTD)

I mean, you had a house full ofstuff.

She surveys a shirt that is a particularly heinous shade oforange and tosses it into the box.

MEREDITH (V.O.) (CONTD)Some of us dread this time of yearbecause it forces us to actuallysearch through everything weveallowed to build up. Some of us

know how hard it really is, to siftthrough the good and the bad, thosedreaded skeletons in our closets.

MEREDITH (CONTD)Derek?

He pokes out his head.

DEREKI left it there.

She looks at him, incredulous.

INT. GEORGE'S ROOM - DAY

Callie and George lie in bed, eyeing each other adoringly.

MEREDITH (V.O.)Others are happy to just geteverything out.

Callie smiles, coy.

CALLIEYou have to promise not to freak

out.

MEREDITH (V.O.)To get it off of their chests orout of their hair.

GEORGETheres nothing you could say thatwould freak me out.

MEREDITH (V.O.)Unaware that perhaps some skeletons

are in the closet for a reason.Callie hesitates, then continues when she sees George cannotwait to hear it.

CALLIEThe person I dated before you,Felice, was --

Callie stares blankly back at him.

GEORGE (CONTD)Womans name.

George's smile disappears, understanding.

INT. ADDISON'S HOTEL ROOM - DAY

MEREDITHMaybe the skeletons like thecloset.

Addison lies in bed with Sloan, clearly annoyed. She throws

off the covers and sits up.

SLOANAddison.

ADDISONIts my fault. I should know bynow, right?

She gets out of bed.

ADDISON (CONTD)How could I ever expect to talk to

you about the big issues when wecant even get past the small ones?

INT. GEORGES ROOM - DAY

Deep in confused thought, George sits up in bed, the coversthrown off. Callie attempts to put a hand on his shoulder.

CALLIEGeorge?

He flinches at her slightest touch, then gets of bed. Callie

is confounded.CALLIE (CONTD)

George.

INT. MEREDITH'S HALLWAY - DAY

Izzie, coffee in hand, makes her way to the top of the stairsas George stomps out of his room, hastily pulling on hisshirt.

George slams the door behind him and stands outsideMerediths door.

GEORGEMeredith!

IZZIEAre you OK?

He ignores her.

GEORGE(yelling)

Are we ready to go?

INT. MEREDITHS ROOM - DAY

Meredith is now standing, grasping an 80s frock.

DEREKIts not like everything would havefit into my tiny trailer anyway.

(re: the dress)What is that?

MEREDITHMy homecoming dress.

She points the unfortunate dress accusingly in Dereksdirection.

MEREDITH (CONTD)The size of your trailer is not thepoint.

DEREKNo, the point is you had horriblefashion sense in high school,didnt you?

MEREDITHOh no, you dont get to do that.

DEREKWhat?

GEORGE (O.S.)I am brushing my teeth and then weare leaving! Two minutes! I knowyou can hear me!

Derek sees her point, softening.

DEREKI had a good reason for leaving.

MEREDITHI know. I just cant imagineleaving my whole life, my bestfriends, without ever looking back.

She plops down once again into the pile, surveying it.

MEREDITH (CONTD)Its a lot to leave behind.

INT. BATHROOM - DAY

George brushes his teeth. Izzie stands in the doorway.

IZZIEYou can talk to me, if you want.Whatever she said or did --

Callie appears from the bedroom, on a mission. Izzie does notbudge, causing Callie to maneuver around her to see her

husband.

CALLIECan we talk about this like adults,please?

INT. MEREDITHS ROOM - DAY

A look of clarity has now crossed Merediths face.

MEREDITHBut you didnt really leave it allbehind, did you? Youre still

running from it.

DEREKFrom what? Addison and I tried --

MEREDITHNot from Addison. From Mark.

Derek scoffs.

GEORGE (O.S.)Meredith! Lets go!

MEREDITHHe McSteamied his way all the wayacross the country --

DEREKFor Addison.

MEREDITHMaybe. Maybe for you too. He wasyour best friend and thats notsomething that goes away because heslept with your wife.

DEREKI think it is. Man Law specificallystates that the act of sleepingwith your best friends wifenegates any prior friendship.

MEREDITHDid you just say Man Law?

Where are you?

Derek opens the door, equally frustrated.

DEREKShes in the closet!

MEREDITHIm in the closet!

INT. HALLWAY - DAY

George gives Callie a death glare and heads for the stairs.

GEORGE(through clenched teeth)

Oh well thats just --

In his exasperation, he misses a step and goes tumbling down

the stairs.

At the clatter, Derek and Meredith run out to join Izzie andCallie at the top of the stairs, looking worriedly down.

George utters a noise of pain.

INT. SEATTLE GRACE HOSPITAL - ENTRANCE - DAY

George enters the hospital with a limp, about five stepsahead of Callie.

CALLIE

If you would just let me take alook at it.

GEORGEIm fine!

A few steps behind Callie are Meredith and Izzie, theresident peanut gallery. Derek trails close behind.

IZZIE(not quite whispering)

Do you think something happened in

bed, maybe? Like maybe she didnt --Callie turns sharply, silencing Izzie. Meredith and Izzieexchange glances as soon as Callies attention returns toGeorge, who wants none of it.

Cristina approaches, looking spry, already scrubbed in.

CRISTINAWhy is Bambi limping?

Derek tries to sneak past Meredith, but she is on to him.

MEREDITH (CONTD)And dont think youre off the hookbecause Im momentarily distractedby Georges lovers spat.

DEREKOf course not.

He continues walking, unable to conceal a smirk.

MEREDITHSeriously.

Meredith looks at Cristina.

MEREDITH (CONTD)Seriously.

Cristina is about to inquire when:

CHIEF (O.S.)(yelling; urgent)

We need urgent care! Somebody pageDr. Burke!

All heads turn toward the sliding doors as a gurney is rushed

through led by the Chief and a NURSE. On the gurney is apale, unconscious WOMAN, 34.

Cristina is the first to rush to the bedside.

CHIEF (CONTD)(to the nurse)

...passed out in the parking lot.

CRISTINAI can assist, Chief. Is she areturning patient?

The Chief looks at her as if seeing her for the first time.

CHIEF(hesitant)

Yeah, shes -- she was Burkes --

Derek sprints in, a look of recognition crossing his face ashis gaze shifts from the patient to the Chief.

Cristina stops dead in her tracks, the gurney continuingquickly past her, a bevy of doctors and nurses crowding in to

assist.

Cristina examines Jessicas charts when the unconsciousJessica stirs. Her eyes open groggily. Cristina pretends notto notice as Jessica takes in her surroundings.

JESSICA(disheartened)

I fainted.

CRISTINAYeah. Were gonna run some tests tofind out why.

Jessica nods, routinely.

JESSICAHas Preston seen me already?

CRISTINAUh, no. Not yet. He should be heresoon.

JESSICAOh good.

Cristina readies to leave.

CRISTINAI should actually go check --

JESSICADo you know him?

(beat)I mean, of course you know him.Thats a stupid question. Everybodyknows Preston Burke. But I guess Imean do you... know him?

Cristina makes a visible effort to remain stone-faced.

CRISTINAYes I -- I know him.

JESSICAHes great, isnt he? I mean, asdoctors go, Ive heard hesphenomenal.

Jessica attempts to tidy her mussed hair. She does not noticeCristinas awe at this revelation.

JESSICA (CONTD)I wonder if hell even recognize melike this.

CRISTINAI think Ill go check on him - findhim for you right now.

She bolts out the door.

INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY - DAY

Meredith, Izzie, George, and Alex wait for assignments.

The Chief paces past, eyeing Derek.

CHIEFWhat are you doing dawdling?

DEREKIm not dawdling.

He snaps to it.

Merediths hand shoots up like a proud kindergartner whoknows the answer to a math equation.

There is collective audible GASP.

Derek turns sharply to her, simultaneously amused andannoyed. His look does not escape Dr. Bailey.

BAILEY

She doesnt have any surgeriesscheduled today.

MEREDITHI know. Im... Well its been awhile since Ive worked in thatarea and Im trying to expand mybreadth of experience before Idecide which area I want to pursuemore definitively. Its not allabout surgeries all the time,right? Sometimes just watching andlearning the everyday stuff --

BAILEYFine.

MEREDITHThank you.

She flashes a pleased look in Dereks direction and leaveshurriedly in the direction of the elevators.

Alex leans in close to Izzies ear.

Alex resigns a look of confusion.

She urges them toward the elevators.

Callie is outside of an exam room as George approaches. Sheputs a hand on his arm.

Callie swallows her pride and follows.

INT. FAYES EXAMINATION ROOM - DAY

Callie wants to talk to George, but he is in no place tolisten.

Inside sits a 17-year-old girl, pretty, but tomboyish.

GEORGESo you had a bad fall...

(searching the chart)Faye?

FAYE

Yeah. Just a little stumble. I wasbeing too ambitious. I get carriedaway sometimes.

GEORGEYour name short for anything, Faye?Felice, maybe?

He flashes a serious look in Callies direction. Shewithholds a scowl.

FAYEIts short for Faye.

(beat)How bad is it really? I have acompetition coming up. I cant beseriously injured if I want tocompete. Please tell me its notserious.

GEORGEWhat kind of competition?

FAYESkateboarding. Its a big one too.

I cant miss it.GEORGE

Well do everything we can to makesure youll be ok for it.

He smiles at her reassuringly.

Derek and the Chief wash their hands.

Dereks response comes a millisecond too late, time enoughfor the Chief to spot his lie.

He turns off the water and smiles shortly.

INT. OBSTETRICIAN WARD - DAY

At the nurses desk, Addison finds it incredibly strange to

be accompanied by a perky Meredith.

ADDISONI should warn you, it looks likeits going to be fairly uneventfultoday. Very low key. No urgentcases.

MEREDITHOh, I dont mind.

ADDISONYoure sure you wouldn't rather be

scrubbing in for a surgery? I sawquite a few on the board that you --

MEREDITHNo, an uneventful day soundsperfect.

ADDISONAlright.

OFF Addisons perplexed, suspicious gaze.

INT. FREE CLINIC - DAYAlex and Izzie trudge into the moderately busy clinic behindBailey.

IZZIEI know this place was kind of myfault, but that doesnt mean I wantto be here all the time.

IZZIEDr. Bailey, I understand that youwant us to be well-rounded inmedicine. I get that. But we arestill surgeons, and I just dontsee how we can benefit when hardlyany exciting surgical cases evercome into the free clinic.

BAILEY

Stevens, you should know by nowthat just because every medicalemergency is not surgical does notmean they are not equallyimportant.

Alex scoffs. Izzie tries not to smile.

Bailey glares at them.

BAILEY (CONTD)Now I dont know what its gonnatake for you to realize that, but

until you do, youre stuck here.

Suddenly, the doors CRASH OPEN.

All eyes turn to a MAN, 36, stumbling in. He can hardly standvertically and is grabbing his back in severe pain.

He collapses on the floor.

INT. FREE CLINIC - DAY

The fallen man, OSCAR, now sits in an uncomfortable, hunchedover position on a hospital bed. Izzie tests his eyes for

light sensitivity. He is extremely edgy.

OSCARIbuprofen?

Izzie tucks the light in her pocket and makes a note on hischart.

OSCAR (CONTD)You cant give me somethingstronger? Vicodin? I dont care.Something to actually numb thepain!

IZZIEI cant give you any heavymedications until I fully examineyou.

OSCARIm telling you I need it now! See,this is why I never go to thehospital. You doctors dont doanything anyway.

He takes a closer look at Izzie.

OSCAR (CONTD)Are you even a doctor? Or are youmy nurse?

Bailey walks past, keeping an eye on Izzie. Alex follows afew paces behind. He gives Izzie a commiserating look as shedoes her best to keep her cool.

IZZIEIm a surgeon. How long has yourback been bothering you?

OSCARNot long. Couple of months.

Izzie looks at him incredulously.

IZZIEAnd you didnt think to see anyonewhen the pain started?

Bailey looks him up and down. She flashes him a do you wantme to answer that? glare.

BAILEYThe sooner you do it, the sooneryou can move on to another case.Now watch your bedside manner,Karev. Girls at this stage can bevery fragile.

ALEX(to himself)

She opens the door to:

Inside sits ALEXA, 19, pretty and young-looking for her age.

BAILEY

Alexa nods.

Alexa nods again, still quiet.

She looks sternly at Alex, then closes the door behind her.

INT. OBSTETRICIAN WARD - HALLWAY/ON THE MOVE - DAY

Addison and Meredith exit an exam room.

MEREDITHI realize there may still be someawkwardness between us. Iunderstand. If youre not willingto talk to me.

Addison is unsure, but slightly curious, of what angleMeredith is trying to play.

ADDISONIm talking to you, Dr. Grey.

MEREDITHI mean talk to me as me, asMeredith. If youre not ready totalk to me on a level other thanprofessional, I understand.

ADDISONIm talking to you, Meredith.

She lets a hint of an amused smile slip.

Addison flashes a look of warning.

MEREDITH (CONTD)Everything.

Addison sighs and sets down her work decidedly. Meredithleans in, all ears.

ADDISONIt may be hard to picture it now,but they were like brothers.

(reconsidering)I guess theyre still like brothersin a way, arent they? Only itsmore of a twisted sibling rivalrything they have going.

MEREDITHAlways trying to one-up one anotherbut avoid each other at the sametime.

I wish I knew.

Addison smile turns pensive.

Burke shows up to examine Jessica. Jessica looks happy,relieved to see him. His emotions reflect hers.

BURKELong time.

Cristina hands Burke her charts dutifully, which heimmediately looks over without a second thought.

He hesitates, then:

BURKE (CONTD)I hope you dont take this thewrong way, but I was hoping Iwouldnt have to see you again.

JESSICATrust me, I wish I was justvisiting for a friendly chat.

Cristina watches quietly, always the professional. Burkeseyes finally rest on her. He seems to be holding back onaccount of her presence.

JESSICA (CONTD)I know Ill need another surgery.

BURKEWe dont know that yet.

JESSICAIm prepared, risks and all. Youjust do what you need to do.

Burke smiles at Jessica's courage.

BURKEHopefully surgery wont benecessary. Well wait for theresults to know for sure.

Jessicas teary eyes are all too aware of her dire condition.Cristina sees Burke hurting with her.

George finishes wrapping Faye's wrist in a bright pink cast.

GEORGEYou know, I think its great thatyoure so driven to succeed in apredominately male hobby.

FAYEIt's not a hobby. It's a sport.

GEORGEOh. Of course.

Callie enters in the doorway.

CALLIEFaye, Im gonna give your mom acall, ok? Maybe shes stuck intraffic or something.

Faye immediately turns frantic.

FAYENo! Do you have to? Shes at work.I dont want her to know whathappened. She cant know. I wasn't

even supposed to be skateboarding.(to George)

Shell kill me if she knows I gothurt because of it.

GEORGEWell, maybe we can --

CALLIEWe still have to call her.

George smiles at Faye, rising to leave.

GEORGEWell see.

OUTSIDE OF THE ROOM

George discreetly pulls Callie aside, a pleading look in hiseyes.

Its a minor sprain, Callie.

CALLIEIt doesnt matter how minor it is.

GEORGEWe dont have to tell her mom howshe got hurt. It could have beenanything.

CALLIEWere not lying for her. Her momhas a right know the truth if her

daughter is going behind her backto pursue a hobby thats causingher to injure herself.

GEORGEIts a sport, actually. And I dontsee why her mother needs to know.Legally, fine. But every detail?Its just going to hurt her.

CALLIEIm still your superior, George.The decisions made.

As he heads back to the room:

INT. OPERATING ROOM - DAY

Derek and the Chief perform surgery on a patient. Derekseyebrows are furrowed uncharacteristically.

CHIEFYoure sure youre fine?

DEREKYup. Why?

He lowers his voice as if that magically means no one but theChief can hear him.

DEREKMeredith just wont let this thingdrop and now I just -- I wonder.

The other interns and doctors exchange glances. The Chief hasno idea what he is talking about, but tries to be reassuring.

CHIEFIts only natural.

Derek nods, agreeing.

INT. OBSTETRICIAN WARD - HALLWAY/ON THE MOVE DAY

Addison and Meredith walk in sync now.

ADDISONThey always somehow found a way todo a lot together. Neither are thebiggest fans of baseball, but theirthing was Yankees games.

MEREDITH(surprised)

Really?

ADDISONI know.

MEREDITHDerek likes baseball?

ADDISONNot really. It was just theirthing. They had this thing aboutMan Law? I never really understoodit. But they did so I just stayedout of it.

As Meredith turns away to let her take the call, Cristinasprints up to her.

MEREDITHResearch.

(off Cristinas look)Whats up?

CRISTINAFainted parking lot lady is Burkesfiancee.

MEREDITHYoure Burkes fiancee.

CRISTINAHis old one! And shes... nice. Andpossibly very sick. And they have a

bond.

MEREDITHHe loves you.

CRISTINAIm not worried about that! But howdid I never know about her?

(whispering)I think shes the reason he wentinto cardiothorasics. Why didnt Iever know that?

MEREDITHDoes she know about you two?

CRISTINAGod no. And Im not about to tellher. Burke might.

(considering)No, he wont.
