Term 1 Newsletter 2019

Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey The year seems to be flying. The Matrics have approximately 60 teaching days left this year and it feels like only yesterday that the term started. Term 1 has been particularly busy this year and our boys have risen to the occasion and thrown themselves into their activities with gusto. We started this year celebrating the academic results of both last year’s Matrics as well as the whole school body. Not only did our Class of 2018 improve their averages across the board and increase our Bachelors’ pass rate by a whopping 10%, every single grade improved their grade average. This is a positive trajectory. Our focus on academics will be maintained, and we, as a community, must continue to build on this. Our Grade 8s are proving to be fine young men of The Grey, have settled in well, and are making good progress. This year we welcomed our Grade 8s as part of our school body by having them announce their arrival by ringing the Hope Bell. The Bell, which the Grade 8s ring, is one of three bells (called Faith, Hope and Charity) which used to hang at the original Grey Institute building on the Donkin. The Faith Bell, which is the smallest, hangs in the Junior School. The Charity Bell, the largest of the bells, has stood for many years on the Eastern side of the Quad. The Hope Bell, which represents the Old Greys, has now been hung ’neath the Tower on the northern side of the Quad. It is therefore fitting that the Grade 8s ring this bell on entry to the school, announcing their arrival as a Man of The Grey. The sound of the bell ringing echoes back in time and represents our heritage and traditions while at the same time calling in the hope that the Grade 8s have for their futures as part of The Grey family. This term we were also pleased to have completed a number of building projects. We have:

sunk a second borehole and built a water-processing plant at the western side of the Squash courts

resurfaced the Astroturf

refurbished the hockey dugout and built two additional player dugouts built a mini-Astro behind the Waterpolo pool refurbished the Grade 11 and 12 Boda bathrooms and are now busy with the second

phase doubled the size of the gym

This year has also seen a strong focus on exposing our seniors to various career opportunities and tertiary study requirements. They have enjoyed a number of opportunities to gather more information about options available to them after school. The Grade 12 Parents Evening on 22 January highlighted the requirements for tertiary applications, the responsibilities of the boys in terms of academic demands and the support needed from parents. Wits University presented to our Matrics on 31 January, highlighting the academic programmes, admission requirements and sporting opportunities.

Term 1 Newsletter 2019

On 8 February, Grey High hosted the Rocking Future Careers Expo in the De Waal Hall. Our Matrics were able to interact with representatives from 18 tertiary study institutions. On Monday, 11 February, Stellenbosch University presented to our Matrics who had plenty of questions and took home piles of literature about Stellies and its programmes. Those boys keen on engineering studies (mechanical, civil, chemical and computer) are encouraged to check the SU website for the dates for SU’s “Winter Week” Engineering introduction programme for Grade 11 and 12 learners which takes place during the July holiday. On 26, 27 and 28 March, the Grade 12 classes visited the Working World Career Exhibition in the Feather Market Centre. Each Matric class spent 2 hours at the career exhibition with their Life Orientation teachers. Representatives from a number of academic institutions, including NMU and Rhodes University, as well as other tertiary colleges, training institutions and learnership programmes provided information, answered questions and offered guidance to students keen on careers in diverse fields from chartered accounting to marine biology to military training. More recently, the Madiba Bay Flight School presented to those students keen on careers in the aviation industry with lots of tips for boys who would like to be pilots, but do not have Mathematics or Physical Science as senior secondary subjects. Deloitte and Touche sent their Graduation Placement Officer from their Johannesburg Head Office to chat to our learners on 7 March about careers in chartered accounting “beyond desk work”. In Term 2, the Matrics will have visits from other tertiary training institutions, including NMU, Rhodes University, Varsity College and Volkswagen (to discuss learnership opportunities in their mechatronics programme in particular). We will also host presentations about “gap year” work, study and travel options with YDP, OVC and others. All our senior boys are encouraged to follow up on the contacts made at the career information sessions presented this term and to use the material they were given to research their fields of interest more thoroughly. Most tertiary applications for admission in 2020 opened on 1 March. The majority of applications must be completed on-line using Grade 11 final results as the marks to submit. Our learners are strongly encouraged to explore the myriad bursary and scholarship options available to all prospective South African students on the national bursaries website (www.zabursaries.co.za). We are grateful to our parents, educators and staff who serve on the School Governing Body:

MATRIC RESULTS 2018

November 2018 saw the eleventh set of Matrics schooled under the NCS-FET Curriculum reach the end of the high school line. Our Grade 12 Class of 2018 (163 pupils) made a very good showing, and after re-marking and re-writing procedures have been concluded, we confidently

expect the above statistics to improve still further. Our current Matriculants have been challenged to improve the Bachelors pass rate even more. The Matrics of 2019 will know what is expected of them – show us what you can do this year!

Aggregates do not form part of the Department's reporting procedure, but no fewer than 32 of our Grade 12 candidates attained a pass level equivalent to Full Academic Colours ('A'-aggregates) at Grey: Callan Alderman, Adriaan Bouwer, Bradley Breetzke, Bradley Carthew, Lodewyk de Jager, Dylan de Lange, Martin Ellis, Kyle Flanegan, Ross Fourie, Benjamin Gardiner, Christoffel Greeff, Okuhlekodwa Jikela, Caleb Loyson, Lonwabo Mabula, Michael Marais, Lethokuhle Mtshali, Samuel Oddy, Thivan Palani, Thomas Pearson, Vekash Pillay, James Potgieter, Nikhil Riga, Satya Steed, Douw Steenkamp, Matthew Strydom, Jason Valentyn, James van der Merwe, Warren van der Merwe, Ruben van der Wat, Matthew van Wyk, Gerhard Woithe, Matthew Woods, Ryan Young. These young men have every right to be very proud of their efforts.

Unofficially, based on aggregates of seven core subjects, Gerhard Woithe, Caleb Loyson and James Potgieter were our top three candidates. Gerhard Woithe and Dylan de Lange achieved 8 distinctions, while four Matrics (Caleb Loyson, Michael Marais, Matthew Woods and Jason Valentyn) achieved 7 distinctions each. James Potgieter, Adriaan Bouwer, Douw Steenkamp and Thivan Palani attained 6 distinctions each.

There were, in total, 248 subject distinctions (18 in Mathematics, 24 in Physical Sciences, 35 in History, 20 in Afrikaans First Additional Language, 13 in English Home Language, 19 in Life Sciences, 13 in Information Technology, 10 in Accounting, 5 in Geography, 6 in Engineering Graphics & Design, 3 in Mathematical Literacy, 6 in Music, 2 in AP Mathematics, 1 in Dramatic Arts, 1 in Visual Arts and 71 in Life Orientation) and the subject pass rate was an impressive 98,6%!

It is very pleasing to be able to record that, of the subjects written by Grey boys in 2018, 87% were passes in excess of 50%, and 94% were passes in excess of 40% - meaning to say that our 2018 group of Matrics did not really make significant use of that 30% (and much criticised) 'buffer'. To go even further, 70% of subjects written were passed with a mark of 60% or higher!

ACADEMIC COLOURS AWARDS – 1ST TERM 2018

Grade 11 new awards: Colours – Jonathan Hughes, Miles Boucher, Darian Smith Half Colours – Reece Audie, Marco Nortje, Tristan Ingram, Kai Allan, Timothy

SUBJECT CHANGES

In Grade 10 (2019), a maximum of two subjects may be changed, subject to the approval of the school and if it is deemed to be in the pupil's best interest to do so. The deadline for subject change requests is the end of the second term. However, the school would certainly not look favourably on a pupil wishing to change two subjects at this stage, because that would imply that little care was taken by the pupil and his parents with regards to his subject choice last year, at the end of Grade 9.

It is, therefore, imperative that parents and pupils ensure that sensible subject choices are made towards the end of Grade 9, as it may not be possible to do much about it a year or two down the line. It should be borne in mind that prospective changes may not be practicable because of internal factors such as class sizes and staffing issues.

JUNE EXAMINATIONS

The June examinations will run from Monday 21 May until Friday 7 June for most subjects. The Grade 8 and 9 pupils will be at school from 07:40 until 11:00 on most days during exams, although there will be a few exceptions to this. Grade 10-12 examinations will be run in two sessions – 08:30 and 13:30. In these three grades, boys are expected to report to their exam venue/lines by 08:00 at the latest for an 08:30 exam and at 13:00 for a 13:30 exam. The exam timetable will be printed in the school calendar next term. Please ensure that boys are familiar with their timetable to avoid the unnecessary stress of being late for an exam. There is an information session pertaining to the exam procedures for boys who receive concessions on Monday 13 May after school from 14:15-14:45. All boys who receive extra time or other concessions are expected to attend.

An Examination Booklet detailing the rules and requirements for examinations as well as the examinable scope of the content in each subject will be issued to each pupil next term. Boys will receive a hard copy of this booklet and it will be loaded on to the D6. Please ensure that you and your son read the contents thoroughly.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL DURING EXAMINATIONS OR CONTROLLED TESTS (VERY

IMPORTANT)

Parents are requested not to make holiday or other arrangements during scheduled sessions of examinations or controlled tests. It is an extremely disruptive practice and is very open to abuse. The June mid-year exams this year will run from Monday 21 May – Friday 07 June inclusive, although there will be other assessments in the last week of term. Furthermore, as detailed in the school rules (#24 – page 30 of school calendar; see also page 18), a medical certificate must be submitted after any period of absence during exams or controlled (grade) tests, the timetables for which are also to be found in the school calendar.

PROMOTION/PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS

Grades 8 & 9 – candidates must offer the nine official GET subjects and pass eight (provided that the SBA component of the ninth subject has been completed); they must obtain 50% for English (or Afrikaans) Home Language, 40% for Afrikaans or isiXhosa First Additional Language, 40% for Mathematics, 40% in any three of the other subjects, and 30% in two of the remaining subjects. Immigrant pupils may be exempted from passing their FAL, but that will count as their ninth (failed) subject – SBA requirements must still be met. In all

Page 6: GREY HIGH SCHOOL...The exam timetable will be printed in the school calendar next term. Please ensure that boys are familiar with their timetable to avoid the unnecessary stress of

P a g e | 6 of 28

Term 1 Newsletter 2019

subjects, the SBA component and the final examination component will respectively count 40% and 60% of the promotion mark.

Grades 10/11/12 – candidates must offer seven subjects as prescribed (HL, FAL or second HL, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation plus three other subjects) and obtain 40% in three subjects (one of which is HL), 30% in three other subjects and a complete SBA component in the seventh (failed) subject. In most subjects, the SBA component and the final examination component will respectively count 25% and 75% of the promotion mark, except for Life Orientation (100% and 0% - externally moderated).

FET REGISTRATION & IDENTITY DOCUMENTS

The registration process for Grades 9/10/11/12 is underway. It should be understood that, under FET regulations, a candidate's identity number is a vital part of this process – it is, therefore, essential that each Grey boy is in possession of his identity number (updated from the birth certificate, if necessary) from the earliest stage possible in high school.

All pupils, irrespective of grade, are urged to apply to Home Affairs for their ID cards as soon as it is possible. The identity number is an integral component of Departmental registration, from as early as March of the Grade 9 year. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

PARENTS’ MEETINGS: TERM 2

There are two Parents’ Meetings scheduled for the first week of Term 2: Grade 12: 03 April Grade 8: 04 April

These meetings will provide parents with an opportunity to see each of your son’s subject teachers to discuss his progress thus far in the year.

There will also be a Grade 9 Subject Choice meeting on 16 April.

Parents are welcome to contact the following teachers at any stage if they would like information on their child’s academic progress:

Subject Teacher: Student performance/progress, class material Subject Head: Student performance/progress, subject material if you have already met with

the Subject Teacher Grade Head: Grade queries RE overall academic performance/exams (all subjects), subject

Scifest Africa/Rhodes University High School Quiz

Grey High School participated in the Rhodes University High School Quiz, conducted as part of the Scifest – the National Science Festival which is held in Grahamstown every year. A qualification round, in the form of a written quiz, was completed earlier in February. Based on

the results of this round, the Grey High team consisting of Jonathan Hughes, Nafi Alam and Luke Weddell were required to write a tie-breaker quiz against another school. Their success in this quiz saw them through to the final round.

The final quiz was held at the Monument in Grahamstown on Monday 11 March, with the top four qualifying teams from across the country invited to participate. The Grey High team competed against two teams from Pretoria Chinese High and a team from Parktown Boys’ High. The Grey team performed exceptionally well and finished the day in first place. The team won a Raspberry Pi 3, a small single-board computer developed to promote teaching of computer science, to be used at school. The boys each won an interesting goodie bag, and a very generous bursary covering the first year tuition fees at Rhodes University, should they choose to study there.

MUSIC

The Grey Strings, Voices and Symphonic Winds were well received at our three Open Days for prospective Grade 8s. Although load-shedding affected our Open Rehearsal on 11 February, an audience of parents and interested persons was given 45 minutes of awareness and insight into the way a band functions and produces its concerts, which was an important exercise. A select group from among the Grey Voices were enthusiastically received when they performed on Valentine’s Day for the ladies at Collegiate. On Sunday 17 February our many music groups performed at our annual Proms ‘neath the Tower Concert, which was even better attended than usual. We were blessed with good weather and it was our pleasure to welcome Mr Paulo Putigna and the Collegiate Band to make a guest appearance. This will, no doubt, be repeated in future years. The Grey String Orchestra will perform at the Collegiate Strings Festival on 7 March, and the Grey Voices make an appearance to entertain at the Collegiate Food Fair on 8 March. The Grey Symphonic Winds are in intense preparation for an extremely prestigious engagement on 14 March, where they are performing for the entire opening Gala Concert of the Annual National South African Society of Music Teachers Conference, which is being held at NMU this year. Suffice it to say that a tougher and more knowledgeable crowd could not be assembled in the country, and the boys will execute their skills in front of the most distinguished and eminent music educators from schools and universities throughout South Africa. Grey Voices are booked to be recorded by KYKNET on 3 June.

INTRAMURALS

ANGLING CLUB

The Angling Club took part in an excursion in the first term and it was thoroughly enjoyed by a number of new faces who have become a part of The Grey. Unfortunately, some senior members were unable to attend this outing as they were involved in Cricket which took place that Friday. Based on favourable reports that a lot of fish were caught the previous week, we headed to Cape Recife on 1 February, hoping to be just as successful. Unfortunately, a westerly wind came through the Wednesday and Thursday which made for difficult conditions. Some fishermen managed to net a few good fish but not everyone was as lucky.

The Angling Club will have their annual two-day camp at Van Stadens Resort during the week of 25 March. Dates will be confirmed closer to the time which will be dependent on the weather. We are excited about the upcoming fishing season and we cannot wait to host Queen’s College during our Reunion on 10 May.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The 1st Term was a good start to the year. We started off by collecting shoe boxes and Christmas wrapping paper for our Santa-shoe box project. We managed to collect 50 boxes and wish to fill them during the year. During February we collected toothpaste and so far we are standing on 67 tubes. Our March drive is for Soap and Facecloths. The Annual Coin Laying took place on 8 March - The Love Story Foundation is our beneficiary this year and we will be doing the handover in the following term. We are planning to hand over the school shoes that were donated by the Matric Class of 2018 together with the Grey Union Society, presently collecting sport tekkies, to B-Blessed. This project is run by Old Grey Union in conjunction with the Community Service Society. Thank you for your support thus far.

COMPETITIVE COOKING CLUB

Grey has partnered with Capsicum Culinary Studio in

Port Elizabeth, and on 27 February launched its

Competitive Cooking Club, named Grey Cooks. The

boys will attend lessons once a week, which will

involve lectures and practical training. The year’s

course will culminate in a cook-off for the title of Best

Grey Cook for 2019. Thank you to Capsicum for

facilitating this new initiative, and for the parents and

boys for supporting it.

DEBATING

The debaters took part in the Alexander Road High School Debating Festival on Saturday 26 January. The results were as follows: Juniors won their first debate against Alexander Road and narrowly lost their second debate against Muir College. Seniors won both their debates against Pearson and DF Malherbe.

The following debaters were adjudged “Best Speaker” in their debates: Sachin Naidoo, Benjamin Taylor, Chris Finn and TJ Russelo. The debaters participated in the UTH-PE Debating League this term. GAMING CLUB

The Gaming Club has participated in the first-ever High School E-Sports League. Our teams are: 1 League of Legends Team, 1 DOTA 2 Team, and 2 Counter Strike: Global Offensive Teams.

Being part of this league allows our students to play against 26 other schools from all over the country, including Jeppe, Westville, Paul Roos Gym and Monument. Fixtures are set up weekly and players are able to play from the comfort of their own homes. The experience of competing against other schools in this type of environment has been invaluable, and our players gain experience and skill with each passing game.

GREY MATTER

With this term being the last for the Matric members, the seniors were eager to prove their mettle. The Grade 11 and 12 members managed to fit in a very insightful and enjoyable excursion to the PE Express, as well as produce a successful edition. The leadership of Sachin Naidoo has been outstanding, and his Deputy, Ricky King, has supported him well. Congratulations and thank you to Cody Coombe-Davis for designing no fewer than six editions. Thank you to all our Matric reporters for their dedication and input over the years. The Term 1 issue will be distributed on the first day of next term.

GREY PULSE

The Pulse boys have had a very busy term. They assisted with setting up venues for Debating, preparing for the open evenings, served as waiters for the Academic Dinner, the Prefect And Parent Dinner, and assisted the Music Department in setting up for the annual Proms ‘neath the Tower.

GREY UNION

The first meeting this year was held and new prospective committee members had the chance to present their case on why they needed to be a part of the Junior Committee. A big congratulations to the following boys that were chosen to be a part of the Junior Committee: Kellan Harrison, Russell Lister, Lusanele Nelani, Lathi Nqebe, Nathan Sieberhagen and Oliver Roode. After the election, these boys had to get busy planning their first task: the Valentine’s Day Cards. This was a big success as over 200 cards were sold.

JUNIOR CITY COUNCIL

Grey’s Grade 12 Representative is Sachin Naidoo, JCC Deputy Mayor, and Grade 11 Representative, Lusa Nelani, Councillor. The Council Members from the various schools are guided by the Rotary Club of Algoa Club and are given invaluable speaking advice at their monthly meetings by Toastmasters. We are very proud of the manner in which the Grey Councillors conducted themselves at the past meeting and look forward to future discussions. Grade 10 students who are interested in the JCC are encouraged to find out more from Mrs Glover.

SCA

The SCA has had a busy first term, starting with a welcome event for our new Grade 8s. For the first time, we combined our welcome with the New Parents’ Social. This was a great success and we had a turnout in excess of 80 Grade 8s. The SCA Committee got to know the newest Grey

men informally during the evening. In SCA, our focus is always God and bringing our Grey Men into a closer relationship with God. The Committee has continued to run morning meetings every morning before school, in the Restaurant. A smaller group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at second break in G8. Everyone is welcome at these meetings. We welcomed a team from the B-Blessed organization to our assembly on 1 February. This team is doing wonderful work in disadvantaged communities, teaching young people to play Basketball and providing them with a safe and fun pastime. We are hard at work collecting tekkies for these young people and raising funds to enable them to purchase tekkies.

We are excited to be welcoming the Worship Team from Oxygen Life Church to lead our annual inter-schools worship evening on Thursday 14 March. We know that God will be in our midst as we worship Him and fellowship together. Another date to diarise is our annual SCA camp, which takes place at Oceanview Forest Resort from 7 to 9 June.

PRESERVATION SOCIETY

The Preservation Society commenced the year by adopting and funding the rehabilitation of a resident penguin from SANCCOB (The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) for the course of 2019. This marks a new partnership with SANCCOB which will include regular visits to the Cape Recife facility to volunteer support and assistance to the care of the marine animals in our community.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD REPORT

We have received a substantial number of new enrolments this term, many of them RCL representatives. Mr Brett Malila, the newly appointed programme manager of President’s Award Eastern Cape, hosted a meeting at Grey in February, which was extremely valuable as he explained the programme to new participants, emphasising the ease with which levels can be completed.

PROGRAMMING CLUB

This exciting club offers members the opportunity to learn more about Information Technology

and Software Development. You do not have to be a computer genius to join the club as it is open to everyone who takes an interest in the computing and software development environment.

During our weekly meetings, we focused on developing software and interactive games using Scratch and Picoboards. Scratch is a programming-language learning environment enabling beginners to get results without having to learn syntactically correct writing first. It is intended to motivate for further learning through playfully experimenting and creating projects, such as interactive animations, games, etc. The PicoBoard is a piece of hardware called a sensor board that can be combined with the Scratch programming environment to allow your Scratch programs to react (and even respond) to events happening outside of the computer (sound, light, etc.)

The club members also went on a tour of our computer facilities at The Grey. Our IT Manager, Mr Carlo Heydenreich, explained to the boys how our computer network works and explained some interesting facts about the school’s computer hardware and server room.

QUIZ CLUB

During this term the Quiz Team won all three rounds in the Quiz League. Next term we will have our final round, at Grey, against DF Malherbe and Theodore Herzl.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES

BASKETBALL

Basketball has seen an increase in numbers this year by having 10 teams. I would like to welcome two new coaches to the Grey Basketball fraternity, Mr Phumzile Panda (U16A & U16D) and Ms Zanele Ncipha (U16B & U16C). U14s: The U14's had a tough season, but still kept their enthusiasm. U16s: The U16 division is a strong one, with the U16A Team winning the U16 Mayoral Cup. 2nd Team: The 2nd's had a successful season, having only been defeated twice the entire season. 1st Team: The 1st Team did their best this season by winning the U18 Mayoral Cup; 2nd in the PE Comets Tournament; 4th in the Kingswood Eastern Cape Championship.

CRICKET

The first half of the season was a very good one for the Grey Cricket teams. Five Grey boys were selected to represent the Warriors Cubs U19 Team which participated in the Cubs week in early January. This was the highest number of boys from any school to represent a Cubs team. They were: Nicholas Fowler, Nicholas Keevy, Elih Thorne, Luke Beaufort and Tristan Stubbs. Tristan was chosen as 'Batsman of the Week' at the Coca-Cola Week and he was selected to represent the SA Schools Team. After the completion of Cubs week, Luke Beaufort was chosen to represent the SA U19 Team who are currently touring in India. This in turn meant that three boys, would not be able to attend our 1st XI festival in January. This was advantageous as we were able to look at a number of young cricketers who played really well. We won 2 out of 4 matches. This included a dominating draw against Affies. The 1st Term was a good yet tough one for the 1st Team who had to utilise 20 players due to an injury-plagued season which affected many key players. At times, we had 5-6 Grade 10 boys playing in the First Team. The season suffered a few losses but some very big wins. We battled against the likes of KEHS, Glenwood, SACS, Wynberg, Bishops and Selborne, and some very hard fought draws meant that growth wise we were pleased with the way things transpired. Our junior teams faired pretty well this term with a fair amount of 'ups' and 'downs'. Our U15 Team improved all term with wins against teams who beat them last year. Our U14 Team put together a very solid season.

We had our first ever Powerade Grey Bash this year where 6 equal strength teams from U14A through to 1st Team were bought in an IPL auction style and 100 ball Bash was played over three days. It was a wonderful occasion and a great atmosphere for everyone who came to watch. The crowds were bigger than most boys had ever dreamed of playing in front of during school matches. The cricket played was brilliant and the use of pink balls was the highlight for some boys. Watching juniors and seniors as team mates and the camaraderie shown between all the teams were the greatest successes of this tournament. Two U14 boys won 'Man of the Match' awards for their efforts in the semi-final and Michael Wicks, scoring 56* in the finals, was the 'Man of the Match'. The Export Klopper Klappers ended up victorious as the first ever Grey Bash winners. George van Heerden won the Senior MVP and Ashley Ostling won the Junior MVP. A huge thanks to all, especially Powerade as the title sponsor, who have signed a 3-year contract. Once again, thank you to all the team owners and various sponsors who made the Grey Bash the highlight of Term 1 and one that we are all looking forward to again next year. The 1st XI will be leaving in June for a tour to the UK. They will be playing against most of the top UK private schools and will conclude their tour by participating in the Silk Cup Cricket Festival which is hosted by Eton College this year.

GOLF

Katberg Invitational: The tournament was divided up into an A and B section. The first three teams took part in the A-section and the 4th and 5th Teams took part in the B-section. The Grey 4th Team, consisting of Luc Schultz, Tieg Schultz, Ross de Villiers and De Wet Hills, dominated the B-division and won convincingly by 26 shots, with Selborne College in 2nd place and the Grey 5th Team in 3rd place. The Grey 1st Team, consisting of Robbie Shearer (captain), Tim Schady, Gary Colananni and Devon Westcott, played extremely well and won the A-division with Selborne College in 2nd place and the Grey 2nd Team in 3rd place. At the Fynbos Invitational Golf Report at Fynbos Estate, the first five teams were involved. The Grey 4th Team, consisting of Liam Schultz, Tieg Schultz, Luc Schultz and Ross de Villiers, dominated the B-section to win by a very convincing 22 points over second place Nico Malan. The Grey 5th Team had a very solid performance and finished in 5th place overall. The A-section was also dominated by the Grey teams. Our First Team consisting of Robbie Shearer (captain), Lumi Mantshiyo, Tim Schady and Gary Colananni, managed to beat the rest of the field by 8 shots over the two days of play and retained the trophy they won in 2018. Our 2nd Team finished in 6th place and the 3rd Team finished in 7th place overall. Eastern Province Regional Final: The Grey 1st Team took part in the regional final and managed to qualify to play in the national final in Rustenburg later this year. AFFIES Invitational: The Grey 1st Team will be taking part in the AFFIES tournament this coming holiday from the 25 to 29 March. We wish the team all the best.

HOCKEY

The following boys have been capped for the 1st Hockey Team for the upcoming season: Colby Posthumus, Luke Beaufort, Ryan Oborn, Ryan Finlay, James Hofmeyr,

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Term 1, 2019 saw Mountain Biking at Grey High as an official sport. The calendar has been busy and the boys have been actively involved in training sessions and events, with many more to follow in the next few months. Riders have participated in training sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays at Cycology where they have been involved in Fitness Performance Tests and structured training sessions. Wednesday involved outdoor training sessions which included hill training, skills clinics, time trials and many more varied activities. Friday afternoons continue as our social afternoon rides where all riders and family members have joined us at designated venues. Events this term: 1. HERALD CONTINENTAL CYCLE TOUR

Approximately 20 Grey riders participated in the annual Herald Addo Mountain Bike Race in either the 30km or 60km event. Podium finishers included Callum McEwan (3rd in 30km) and Ceajay Bosman (3rd in 60km) with many of our other riders finishing in top 10 positions which is exceptional considering there were over 1500 participants in the various events.

The Herald Continental Team event the following week saw 10 Grey teams participate in the team event which is made up of two riders (one mountain biker and one road cyclist). Congratulations to Ceajay Bosman and Aidan Finlay who finished 3rd in the team event and were up against very strong opposition. Once again we had a number of teams finishing in the top ten.

The Herald events formed part of the Mountain Events Inter-School League. As a result of our top performances in these events to date, Grey High School is presently leading the school log.

Congratulations to Ceajay Bosman who was selected to represent SA at the All Africa Track Cycling Competition in Pietermaritzburg earlier this year. He came away with a number of podium finishes and has earned his Colours award from Grey for special sport.

ROWING

January Camp Despite an early start to the school year, 56 rowers attended the Rowing Camp held at Redhouse. For the duration of four days, the boys trained enthusiastically on the Swartkops River in preparation for the upcoming regattas.

Indoor Regatta The first competition of the year was in the form of an indoor regatta hosted by the professional NMU Rowing Club. The scorching temperature didn’t stop many boys from breaking their personal best on the Concept2 ergo machine. The U14 and U15 athletes raced over 1000m, while the U16 and U19 boys competed over 2000m. Best results: U14: Duncan de Klerk – 3min 52sec; U15: Julian Schmidt – 3min 24sec; U16: Callum Smyth – 6min 56sec; U19: Connor Damin – 6min 49sec.

Settlers Regatta This was the second year that St Andrew’s College hosted the Settlers Regatta in Port Alfred as oppose to on the Settlers Dam where the drought has seen the dam’s water level drop significantly. Best results: 1st place: U15B Octopul; U15A Double; U15A Quad; 2nd place: U14A Octopul; U14A Quad; U14B Quad.

Grey U14 Regatta The junior crews bravely fought the strong south-easterly wind to come out on top, reclaiming the overall points trophy.

Selborne and Buffalo Regatta Buffalo Regatta: Best performances came from the U19B Double who placed 2nd and the U19B Quad who finished 3rd. Overall we made it into 11 finals where we fared well. Selborne Regatta: We achieved two first places in the sprints. Nicholas Cawood finished 2nd in the sculls division and Dale Hurr and Adam Grosse came 2nd in the Double race. Again, Grey progressed into 11 final events.

From left: Nicholas Cawood, Jason Simon , Dale Hurr, Elmo van Olm, Jordan Morris, Connor Damin,

Troy van der Westhuysen, Dlyann Chapman, Anthony Adendorff, Adam Grosse, Daniel Schulze, Fredrick de Jager. Seated: Jared Meyer at the Settlers Regatta this term.

South African Schools Championships This was the first year where we left the Saturday before champs rather than the Wednesday before racing. The time spent beforehand was worthwhile. The four age groups would alternate between training on the dam and sitting down doing academic work. This occurred both after breakfast and after lunch. Much was learnt by the boys, staff and parents. It was a fruitful exercise and one that will put us in the right direction. We made it into one more final than last year. This is pleasing as we focused more on the bigger boats this year. Best results came from: U14 Double (5th); U15 Octopul (7th); U16 Four (4th); U19 Four (B Final – 4th).
