Letztes Jahr, als ich auf die Insel Sylt zog und mir die Arbeiten der Sylter Fotografen ansah, fehlte mir eine differenzierte, spezielle Sicht auf dieses Eiland. Ich wollte mich visuell von den bereits produzierten Fotos abheben und entschied mich, Sylt aus meinen Augen zu präsentieren. Ich entschied mich vor allem für Langzeitbelichtungen um die unzähligen Strukturen, die der Spaziergänger am Strand wahrscheinlich nie wahrnehmen würde, sichtbar zu machen.

Fotografie ist Meditation.Wenn man morgens die spiegelglatte See betrachtet, die Möwen in der Ferne kreischen hört und das Plätschern der Brandung wahrnimmt, dann erkennt man wie wichtig Stille in dieser lauten Welt geworden ist. Diese Gefühle möchte ich dem Betrachter durch meine Fotografien zugänglich machen.

Last year I moved to the island of Sylt and missed a special visual view from the photographers on Sylt. So I decided to show this beautiful island through my eyes. I started to make longtime exposures because of the thousand of different structures which the viewer at the beach doesnt notice.

Photography is meditation.In the morning, while looking into the reflection of the sea, listening to the distant seagulls and sound of waves crashing onto the shore, we recognize the importance of tranquility in an otherwise chaotic world. I wanted to carry this feeling through my photographs into the viewers life.

Ή συγκεκριμένη σειρά φωτογραφιών τραβήχτηκε σε διάστημα 4 χρόνων, απο τότε που ένιωσα τις πρώτες μου καλλιτεχνικές ανησυχίες και φωτογράφιζα οτι θεωρεί ένας νέος φωτογράφος ‘ενδιαφέρον’ μέχρι τώρα που νιώθω πιο κατασταλαγμένος στο πως να προσεγγίσω τη τέχνη της φωτογραφίας . Θυμάμαι οτι ψάχναμε συνέχεια με έναν φίλο μου για εγκατελειμένα κτίρια στην Αθήνα και τα φωτογραφίζαμε. Αυτή η ήσυχη και μυστήρια ατμόσφαιρα που έχουν, σε γοητεύουν αλλα ταυτόχρονα σου δημιουργούν μια αίσθηση φόβου, μοναξιάς και εγκατάλειψής. Η αίσθηση οτι εκεί υπηρχαν άνθρωποι που ζούσαν τη καθημερινότητά τους και δούλευαν, κοιμόντουσαν, τρώγανε και μεγάλωναν ειναι μοναδική. Θυμίζουν εποχές πιο απλές, πιο ανθρώπινες και άμεσες . Ξυπνάνε μια περίεργη νοσταλγία για τότε που ζωή και η συμμετοχή μας σε αυτήν ηταν πιο γεμάτη. Τι να απογίνουν άραγε όλα αυτα τα μέρη ? Κάποια απο αυτά θα σαπίσουν στο πέρασμα του χρόνου και αλλο μεχρι να εξαφανιστουν και άλλα πάλι θα ανακαινιστούν και ποιός ξέρει τι άνθρωποι και δραστηριότητες τα περιμένουν . Κύκλος είναι και γυρίζει, μ’οτι τελειώνει ξαναρχιζει.

Timeless

Schon immer faszinierten mich alte Fotografien, die Menschen in ihrem Alltag zeigten. „Street photography“ um 1900: wie lebten die Menschen damals, was taten sie? das gleiche wie heute. Äußere Gegebenheiten – oder Teile davon – mögen sich ändern, Moden kommen und gehen, Menschen werden geboren und sterben, die Zeit läuft dahin, Jahr um Jahr – aber das Alltägliche ist immer das gleiche, wie ein Zeitstillstand. Es ist diese Zeitlosigkeit, dieses Kontinuum des Alltäglichen, das ich in meinen Bildern dokumentieren möchte. Um Straßenszenen festzuhalten, benutze ich meistens Messsucherkameras (Film und digital) und vorwiegend ein 50mm Objektiv: dies ist für mich die optimale Bedingung, um mich frei und meistens ungesehen auf der Straße und oft auch zwischen vielen Menschen zu bewegen. Für mich bedeutet Fotografieren auf der Straße, das, was ich im Sucher sehe, festzuhalten: daher ohne Ausschnitt, ohne Manipulationen am Bild, ohne gestellte Szenen.Obwohl ich auch in Farbe fotografiere, bevorzuge ich Schwarzweiss: als ein ideales Medium, um die Atmosphäre einer alten Stadt wie Wien wiederzugeben.

Early photographs showing people in the streets, concerned with their daily affairs always fascinated me. “Street photography” of 1900: How did people live then, keeping themselves busy? the same as today. External environments – or parts of it – may change, fashions pass, men are born and die, time is going by, year by year: but everyday life is always the same, like a standstill of time. It is this timelessness, this continuum of everyday life, I want to record in my pictures. To capture street impressions I am working mainly with rangefinder cameras (both film and digital) and predominantly with 50mm lenses: to me the optimal condition to move freely and mostly unseen in the streets, often between of crowds of people. To me taking photos in the streets means to get what I see through the viewfinder: therefore no crop, no manipulations, no posing scenes.Though using color too I prefer Black and White, as an ideal medium to reflect the atmosphere of an ancient city like Vienna.
